I did something stupid and crashed windows on my desktop - it's not my primary pc, and I only use it when I'm at the other house a couple of times a month, but I want to either fix or replace it. I do not have the original windows boot disc or the key# and can't get them. Losing files would not be an issue, I have everything I need here on my primary machine.

Note: The desktop in question is only used for internet surfing.

-will a repair disc even work?
-should I just install a newer version of windows?
-should I just get a new machine (the one in question is probably 10 years old)

I'll hang up and listen

Just for internet use? Trash it and get a cheap tablet.

You can download win on your other machine and put it on a USB device. Plug the USB into your crashed machine and boot to the USB device and run the setup program. You may need to change your boot order options, but it's not hard. The only thing you will need is your Microsoft account info (usually just log in info).

Before you do all that though, what does your computer do when you turn it on? It might be a bad hard drive, which is actually not that big of a deal. You can get a new hard drive cheap, clone your old one onto it (it will be good enough for that), and stick it in your computer and it will be like nothing happened.

Usually, users first dock one window and then switch between the others, choosing which one to dock next. So I thought, why not show a list of recent windows right away, so you don't have to waste time looking for them? I found a program that helps with this Snap Assist in Windows 10. But it only works if you have a Windows license key installed. I bought it here https://impkeys.com/product/microsoft-windows-10-home/. You might want to get a license key, too. I can tell you that the difference is huge, unlike the pirated version.
