Lots to like:

- for a shorter WR he seems to have longer legs and really does stride out when he gets the ball and cuts up the field
- lots of catches in traffic. Evans had that one incredible catch of a long ball early in last season, but Ross seems to have made more catches in traffic than both Evans and Wallace combined in their 3 years at PSU
- some acrobatic catches that show his concentration for the ball, right until the play is over trying to make a play on the ball
- some fight through tackles, especialy for a smaller WR, that show his strength even though he's listed under 170 lbs I believe
- can really catch a football, and makes plays on balls that many of our WR's of the past 2 years had no chance to catch
- didn't face top B10-like defenses other than vs Iowa, which he abused, but probably had more YAC this past season than the whole PSU WR group had over the last 2 years combined!!

What do you guys think?

His QB throws a lot to the right side of his receivers. For the most part, I like what I see.

The first two catches show that the WR doesn't have to be wide open to make catches. Whether it was the wideouts inability to make contested catches or Allar lacked the accuracy to make those throws, we'll see next year. Personally I think it's 75% the former and 25% the latter.

I watched the ESPN 30 for 30 on the 1990s Buffalo Bills last night, which by the way is great. Anyway, something that caught my attention was how James Lofton used technique to get himself open to make catches. It doesn't take a football genius to realize that our receivers last season just didn't have the acumen or desire to work hard enough to get separation.

Step in the right direction for sure.

To be fair, no QB is going to hit all those throws. And we saw with Warren that Allar had the accuracy to give him a chance more often than not. The three straight drops against Boise against tight coverage, even one by Warren, summed up our season perfectly IMO. Just lacked playmakers.

Thanks for sharing. Based on these highlights, Ross looks like a huge upgrade over Evans and Wallace.

I would not be at all surprised if Wallace puts up better numbers than he did last year. He probably would've put up better numbers if he had stayed at PSU. The question will be if he can make tough catches in big moments.

As a point of comparison, look at his highlight reel.

Unfortunately for Wallace, he will be most remembered by PSU fans for:

1) being part of a starting WR group which had zero receptions in a college football playoff game on National TV.

2) having his lunch money taken by an Ohio State DB in another big game on National TV

I don't remember now, but did that play cost PSU the game?

Makes that catch and O$U is not even in the playoffs.

I'll never forget when the staff had Derrick Williams add weight after his freshman year. It seemed like he went front a 4.4 guy to 4.6 in one off season

He definitely lost quickness and some speed after his freshman year. Always wondered why he didn't lose the extra weight.

Fingers crossed!

Good thing. He was in the 165 pound range. Hopefully no loss of speed/quickness with the additional weight for B1G competition and beyond.
Taz Johnson, in Oregon, had a heck of a year and beat us around the head and neck in our meeting. He is 5 10 and 165. he also went to Troy and then transferred to Oregon for two seasons:

  • 2023, 86 receptions for 1182 yards, 13.7 ypc average, and 10 TDS
  • 2024, 83 receptions for 896 yards, 10.8 ypc, and 10 TDS (missed two games)
Most projections have in the 2nd or 3rd round.

I'd take that!

Good enough if he is fast enough to avoid big hits. Hamler, Dotson, and Washington all played without major injuries. Yes Hamler came in with one, but played almost every game during his career.
Yes. What body type is injury proof? None. What body type is prone to injury? The Fleming type? No. Anybody body type can be injured. Tight ends can be injured. Good answer to a baseless question.

The game vs Iowa was impressive, when was the last time a PSU wideout lit up Iowa @ Iowa like that?

Iowa's secondary philosophy is all about corners playing back and not letting anyone get behind them, and he kept getting behind them, so that speaks to his explosiveness.

Remember what happened with Hamler vs. Ohio State? After he had beaten the Buckeyes for a long TD, next time he was targeted, the tOSU corner and safety got him by the shoulders and pile-drove him into the ground for a game-ending concussion. No flag, it was a legal tackle but they were definitely taking him out of the game.

Wow, those are awesome highlights. He could come in and just kill it for PSU. Reminds me of Jordan Norwood but maybe with more speed. Extremely smooth with everything he does, wonderful wonderful ball skills. He doesn't look 5-11, maybe closer to 5-10 or even 5-9. He won't have an easy time against top corners but he should be able to rip most B1G secondaries.

.....and that only happened because of his height and weight....
If ever I go to criminal court... I will waive a trial by jury. Good God!

I'll be real happy if Ross performs like Norwood did at PSU. Hope Allar can make significant progress in building trust with his 2 transfer WR's, Denmark and some others this Spring and Summer and can come out in the 2025 season getting them the ball, trusting them to catch it. PSU needed some upgrades at WR, but I believe some of the poor passing game goes on Allar as well and he also needs to mature in order for PSU to reach the promised land.

Ross is gonna have to gain some weight/strength to approach that Tyreek Hill comparison. Hill looks like a bowling ball while Ross looks like a candlepin.

Hill was 185 at the NFL draft. And, he really didn't have a good college career as he had a lot of discipline problems and ended up playing for three different colleges before the portal.

A better comparison is Tez Johnson who also transferred from Troy but to Oregon. Johnson is only 160 lbs. Johnson scored 20 TDs in two seasons at Oregon and is headed to the draft. He had over 2,000 yards over the last two seasons while missing two or three games. With 169 receptions, he averaged 12.3 yards per carry (2023 and 2024 combined).
