WTF?!? Tailgating started during the Civil War when residents "picnic" to watch the war???

Thats what Todd Blackledge just said.

More and more, I realize I am the sole "sane" person on this planet.
I remember reading about one of the battles and the potomac's at the people were tailgating cuz I thought the war was going to end real quickly and then the northern troops got overrun and we're running backwards through the tailgaters all shot up I guess you could call that tailgating

The Battle of Bull Run. Picnicking might be a better description though, as there were obviously no cars with tailgates.

It is a widely reputed “fact.” But there are instances in horse racing that preceded the civil war. (As well other sports and events).

....and people complain about PSP and their helicopter usage last year.

Washington Politicians and the wealthy were so sure that the "Big, Bad Union Army" was going to whip those mangey Southerans, that the war would be won in one afternoon. They came out in their buggies, servants, (which was part of the reason that the war was being fought over), and had picnics within sight of the battlefield. Needless to say, the upset special alert was on and the politicians were caught up in the rout back to the safety of Washington D.C. along with the Union Army.

I wonder if the union supporters bitched because their side didn’t win by enough.

Lol, good try, but it was Bull Run; the Confederates won in a rout. Clever idea, crappy execution.

Yeah, but it was only the 1st quarter.

Lincoln, IIRC, gave one the best - if not THE best - halftime speeches ever! The Blue came out fired up after that.
