I celebrate a birthday on New Year’s Eve and from the time I was a kid we watched bowl games all day on January 1. Part of my love of the college game from those early days was watching the halftime shows, hearing the bands, seeing the mascots. At PSU I was a journalist, never a band member, but I would still prefer to see that side of the college game.... rather than a bunch of talking heads at halftime. By the way, today’s victory was a nice early b-day present as I sat in my recliner wearing white.

I’m disappointed about how thin the New Year’s Day schedule has become. Last Saturday, we had like 7 bowl games and an NFL triple header. Yesterday, five games. But only 4 on New Year’s Day.

Agree with you on the half time shows, remember a great show from one of the Orange Bowls I attended.

Why would we hate you? I'd say the vast majority of people agree. As a kid I also loved to OD on New Year's Day bowl games. If one game wasn't interesting, you could change the channel and see another one.

Having meaningless games that would have been interesting on Dec 23 wedged between real games is dumb as hell. Minnesota Auburn would be a great game but wedged between playoff games, who really gives a shit besides Auburn and Minnesota fans.

I’ll split the difference: my birthday is on New Year’s Day. First baby born in York County hospital that year. Unfortunately, they didn’t give prizes by that time because people had been bringing their wives that were four months pregnant trying to induce labor.

But yes, my favorite way to spend the day is also to relax and watch the bowl schedule. Somewhat disappointing that it’s become what it has, but it’s all about trying to increase exposure and ratings.

I’m confused about why you think we would hate you? Because you like halftime shows?

This is the downside of the playoffs. ESPN talks about nothing else. What is amazing and also maddening is how ESPN promotes some 30+ bowl games yet all they talk about at halftime is the playoff match-ups. Why not give the stage to these other programs and some of the great college traditions like bands and halftime shows. I don't need talking heads telling me their predictions. As an aside our win will get zero coverage on any late day recaps. Nobody cares except us.
