Yuengling

Agreed that the RR brewed these days is bad, and the stuff brewed in Latrobe was good for a cheap college beer. Granted the beer scale goes like this: Bad >> OK >> Good >> Average >> Above Average >> Great >> Fantastic >> Amazing >> Unbelievable >> Incredible >> Ludicrous

Have you been to the Guinness in Baltimore yet... They did a hell of a job with it. I was surprised how nice it was.

Math fail.:)

Rolling Rock was good when it was independent and made in Latrobe. Then they were bought out by Labatt, which in turn was bought out by Anhauser-Busch, which was in turn bought out be InBev. AB closed the Latrobe brewery and started making something they called Rolling Rock in the big Bud factory in NJ. That shit was never real Rolling Rock- that died when the real brewery in Latrobe died.

So you guys who liked it in college and were disappointed years later- you remember a beer that has been gone for a fairly long time now

I'm in my early 30's so I guess I didn't know it back then. I've never liked the stuff.

I'm sure it was better in the past though.

I looked up the dates- the last real Rolling Rock was brewed in 2006- anything after that was manufactured in a Bud factory

Yuengling is my garage beer. Great all-around. Some microbrews, believe it or not, make a good, drinkable beer like a lager or ale without hopping it up!
actually lots of them do- although it does seem that a lot of newer brewers do take some time to learn that more isn't better when it comes to hops, and some never learn

Believe it or not, all* beers are a lager or ale.

*Wild fermentation beer being the obvious exception

I put anything by Russian River Brewing into the amazing category and the Pliny the Elder, Blind Pig and Damanation ale in the Ludicrously good category.:)

One of my favorite brewpubs. Their beer sampler is legendary and some of their non-bottled exclusives are incredible. Have you ever had the pleasure of having Pliny the Younger?

Yea I was there twice. Only time I will ever wait in line for anything for more than 15 minutes. ;)

Love me some Black and Tan or Chetty Field Ale... Like their Octoberfest as well... Before any beer snobs chime in saying Yuengling is pure swill etc... I enjoy it and am not comparing to high end beers which I enjoy as well. Yuengling stands on it's own and has a great niche market. Sam Koch has talked about how he admires Dick Yuengling so much in how he has positioned Yuengling in between high end micro brew beers and low end bud/miller etc....

Yuengling is not swill. It's a fine beer. It is one of my favorite. I could really go for an ice cold Yuengling lagar right now if I'm being honest.

I recall getting barrels of Rolling Rock back in college and sucking it down like it was mother's milk. Many years later I had a chance to drink one at a party and could not believe how bad it was. Let's just say my palate has changed over the years.

Me too. We used to chase Four Queens with The Rock. My insides loved me for it. So I bought a case of The Rock a few months back just to reminisce. The next morning brought it all home. And to think they sell it as a premium down here in Tejas. Now I'll take a Genesee over The Rock or Yuengling whenever back home. Not Genny Cream Ale. Regular Genny.

A kid on my dorm floor my freshman year was from Pottsville. He'd go home on weekends and smuggle Y! into the dorms on Sunday nights on his return. So my first exposure of it was as good, free beer with a funny name.

They just recently (past few years) started selling it in MA where I live now. I started drinking it again. And gosh darn it, I like it. As many have said here, better than the mass produced beer, but not competing with the microbrews.

Regarding RR, my senior year I dated a girl a few times whose dad was a foreman at the Latrobe brewery. They literally had two refrigerators in their kitchen... one for food and one for RR. So I have fond memories of RR as well. :)

Oh, and a 6-pack of 16oz'ers of RR was $1.85 at the bottle shop off of Beaver Ave.

Good stuff. Rock was always very light and inoffensive, and great in the pony bottles on a hot day. I compare it to High Life or even the light offerings from the big boys. I, like many others, haven’t had a sip since they closed the Latrobe plant. I used to buy it because it supported PA workers. It’s not good enough to buy without the local connection.

Nothing finer than RR ponies at the skeller.... brings back great memories

Lager and Black and Tan for me. Never cared for "Premium". If you have to be told that something is premium or luxury, it probably isn't.

Black and Tan OK, it will do in a pinch but Michelob Amberbock (dark lager) is better.

No I haven't been yet but plan to, friends that have gone say its very, very impressive.
And I know no one asked but I'll just say it...

My local pub has Elder on tap 365 days a year and I get it on occaision. I appreciate it, but I'm not much of an IPA guy. My beer nerd buddies think that it used to be groundbreaking stuff, but there's so many options now that it just doesn't stand out anymore. The best IPA I ever had was Citra Showers by Noble Ale Works. What the Hell, I was going to go home and watch the basketball team get mauled, but I think I'll stop on the way home from work and get an Elder instead.

Germany brews some great beers. But when I lived in Pittsburgh, my neighbor was
married to a German girl. When her mother came to visit from Germany, mom loved to pound
Iron City's. To each his/her own.

Germans love Budweiser, too.

Local pub! Where is that? Only place I have had Pliny, Blind Pig, or Damnation was at Monk’s Cafe In Philly. Heading there for the weekend so may have to tipple a few.

That is was good beer worth 20 plus bucks a case. Only the well to do of high status would buy it. Suckers fell for it.

Pitters love it. Tells you all you need to know.

Grey Goose: hold my, um, beer....

While the "craft beer" thing HAS been overhyped, at least we now do have the choice to buy good beer if we want to. Prior to Prohibition, there were small breweries all over the country, making a wide variety of beer. After Prohibition, the market was dominated by a handful of large companies, most of them manufacturing swill.

Growing up before the craft beer thing started, I didn't know what good beer was until making my first trip to Canada, because you couldn't get any here.

Every beer is $20/case these days or close to it. Yuengling never claimed to be a micro brew and is a good beer for the price point. Smart business model by them. I enjoy Belgian Monk beers and I also enjoy Yuengling.
