Yuengling

I like ordering it in PA because you just ask for a "Lager". Doesn't work down here.

I thought that was a statewide thing but during a recent trip to Pittsburgh every time I asked for a lager I got strange looks and was asked "which one?"

Love the pics! I was never a big Fred Durst fan (or LB fan) but loved their performance at Woodstock 99 - the cover of Ministry’s ‘Thieves’ is incredible. Whatever you think of what happened there, they killed it.

That was a good show. When they played the Bryce Jordan Center me and the roomies went, it's not like Led Zeppelin was coming to town any time soon. It was at their height and I'd been listening to the radio all summer at work so Nookie was in my head and all that. Close to Woodstock.

What a S show. The show was decent, Sponge opened and they were pup. But after the show the acid freaks from all over kept getting stuck in the elevator at Cedarbook all night. It was a zombie festival that night for sure!

Man sometimes I miss when there were riots outside my front door. Now I get annoyed when people park in front of my house.

Might have been a rookie barkeep. And the young people drink weird stuff now probably.

Flippin is pretty good and used to have a location near my office.

Best pizza (NY style) in DC right now is Wise Guys (near Judiciary Square).

Mama Lucia's is also serviceable if you are in the 'burbs. But yes, DC pizza is terrible.

Yup..have had my share of Lucia's. Iived in Reston...crust is lacking though.

It’s different now. Back in the mid-90s, Pittsburgh area bars charged ‘import’ prices for Yuengling. Once they got bigger, everyone (other beers) was talking about how they were a ‘lager’ (Budweiser most notably). I’d love to see marketing from any other brand in the mid-90s that touted their beer as a lager. Once that took off, brand was less important that style.

Sponge’s debut record was stellar. No idea what happened to them after.

The singer had this little plastic thing he kept leaning on and yelling and it was annoying. Their single made everyone go nuts.

In Yuengling news I recall we pre-gamed at a kegger. Probably Lager.

Am I wrong when I remember Lager had that stupid prong tap that could only be used for that keg and Genny?

Thoughts on the New Haven style place on Wisconsin (Pete’s)?

Best I can find i the DMV is Quattro Goomba’s winery in Aldie - owner is a Blackhawk HS grad and does Western PA style pizza.
Not a big fan of Pete's Apizza (terrible name BTW). Maybe I just don't care for New Haven style.

Of the "thin crust more upscale places" in DC, the best I've had are Timber (in Park View) and Ghibellina (which used to be on 14th St but moved to Ivy City). Matchbox is also acceptable, but not amazing. But this is a very different pizza experience than a NY slice.

Honestly, the 3-minute DC Pizza personal pizzas are some of the better I’ve had in DC. Lots of options and toppings for around $10.00.

What's up with Troegs? Seems like about 100 new flavors per week on the shelf at the local market.
Their Belgian decent?
Belgian Decent? Where did you see that? They make something called Impending Descent. It’s a stout brewed with vanilla bean. That’s available in 16 oz cans. They also make another beer by the same name that is a stout brewed with vanilla bean and cocoa, aged in bourbon barrels.

Troegs has their year round beers and their seasonal beers. Then they have their scratch series beers that are small batches of things they want to try. They release them to the public and sometimes make it again.

I got to say, I just don't share the excitement that some do in here about Yuengling. I used to drink a ton of it. But with the explosion of microbreweries, there are way better beers out there.

Their Lollihop double IPA is one of my absolute favorites (once a year - usually early summer). Also a big fan of Mad Elf during the holidays. Happy that both are on the shelves up here in New England.

Yep. Never had it west of the mountains until the mid-late 90’s. First time I ever had it was when I was at State…then it seemed that was ALL I had. But that’s why I’ll always love this beer…it’s nostalgia from one of the absolute best times in my life.

When it first became available up here in RI, everyone treated it like it was the new great thing in the ever expanding beer universe. For me, it was like taking the slow and winding back roads home.

I'm going to have to hunt that stout down. Nothing better than a well made vanilla stout.

In general, Troegs makes good beer. Their scratch from 2019 was damn good. We bought them out for a conference, we conveniently forgot to put it out to conference attendees. My bad. I often wondered if they rely on the public to say if they like the scratch beer to chose to keep making it.

There are, and I drink a wider variety of styles from WAAAY more breweries than I did 20 years ago.

But...some styles (high ABVs, brown, porters, stouts) aren't conducive (for me anyway) for an all day tailgate (or a day watching games with the guys). There are some great micro pilsners and lagers out there, but I often ask myself, "after beer two, do I care that much?"

Yuengling has a price point similar to Bud or Miller, isn't that high in calories and works for me for "session" drinking.

It has it's place in the beer universe.

I guess Yuengling does have it's place. It's all in how you're feeling. I love Miller lite but it's certainly a quantity beer not quality.

As the great "Samuel Jackson" once said..."It'll get you drunk". See Chappelle Show if confused.

Good point... I live in south florida near the beach. When at the beach or by the pool in the backyard the last thing I want is a heavy beer. I have no problem saying I drink miller lite or coors light by pool when its hot outside. To me there is a time and place for each. There are times when I want a nice flavorful beer and there are times when I want a very light beer.

Yep. Y Lager was a very good beer in the 90's, when the field wasn't so crowded. Now it's slightly above the Buschs, Buds and Millers ... and it's often skunky.

We were in Carolina Beach this year. We went out to a bar one night and they had a locally brewed (Edward Teach, Wilmington NC) blonde stout. Quite good and not too filling. I had not heard of blonde stouts before that. I will not hesitate to try another one if I see it.
