Penn State is 8-0, and Franklin has stated that he wants to be the first African American coach to win a National Championship. Taggart is out at FSU and all signs point to Helton being gone from USC. Franklin is at or near the top of these coaching vacancy wish lists. If you were acting AD, what would you offer Franklin to get him to stay?

Please take this opportunity to remember that Sandy's got this.

He should be the highest paid coach in the B1G. Should also get money for staff and facility upgrades.

Franklin will be top-10 in HC salaries starting next year I believe - making 6.2 million a year. I can't imagine USC and FSU (especially FSU after WT's buyout) being able to match that amount of cash. But his current extension does run out in '22 - would we be ready to go up over 7 million for an extension of 5-6 years? This (media-driven) conversation is going to happen after every firing/end of each season until he's offered one of these "mega-deals" that all of the top tier coaches hold.

The portion Sandy needs to get fixed is the buyout - a $1 million buyout for one of the game's top and most sought after coaches seems ridiculously low to me.

EDIT: just read that the buyout for 2019 is $2 million. Becomes $1 million next year and remaining subsequent years.

He needs to make more than Harbaugh, who has accomplished zero since becoming Michigan's wildly overpaid HC. Good coaches are going to be sought after every year - even Saban's name came up when Texas had their HC rodeo a couple years ago. A lot of times the best response from HCs is no response, but sometimes it isn't. I can only assume the buyout is low because it is negotiated by the coach in the event another 'dream job' becomes available.

I'm appalled at how much college coaches are already paid. In any sane society, we'd be talking about how grossly overpaid they already are.

But we don't live in a sane society, and CJF is without any doubt the guy for the job- so pay him what you have to.

The proper way to elicit a response is....How much should PSU pay Franklin if he:
1. Finishes undefeated
2. Finishes 11-1
3. Finishes 10-2
4. Finishes 9-3

What I have always found funny (ironically speaking) is that when the University kicked Joe to the curb, the University took some moral high ground to de-emphasize the importance of football.

The "leaders" found out that they really like the football revenue and its ability to fund most of the non-sustaining sports.

It just reinforces the thinking that these so-called Captains of Industry couldn't see beyond current moment.

They are trained to care about the next quarterly report. Not the next 10 Annual Reports.

They suffered temporary blindness in the struggle for self preservation.

The only direction in which that buyout is going is down, to like zero, the same as Saban's.

Franklin's contract is a virtual carbon copy of Urban Meyer's. The only thing different are the names and amounts. Barbour was so unprepared, that Franklin's agent, who was also Meyer's at the time, gave her the boilerplate. She sat on it for months, which made Franklin and his agent enormously happy, and then finally got back to them with no more than an "OK."

Appalled and yet you are here on a college football message board and not on some charity message board or some teacher message board.

Why does he have to be paid more? If "Penn state is such a special place" no amount of money elsewhere should be able to steal him away.

Or is that just lip service?

A very short list of jobs more important than football coach that are paid less:

ER Room Nurse
Marine Corps Commandant
POTUS
EMT
Firefighter
Police Officer

You can be a football fan and still recognize the absurdity of it all- at least some of us can.

Because he’s a top 5 coach who isn’t among the top 5 highest-paid coaches. Franklin should absolutely expect to be compensated commensurate to his standing amongst his peers, no matter how much he enjoys his current job.

Amen. Everyone likes to feel they are valued and appreciated. Show me the money.

Aren't the Myans extinct?

The 13 most highly-paid college football coaches (as of beginning of 2019 season):

Dabo Swinney Clemson
Nick Saban Alabama
Jim Harbaugh Michigan Big Ten
Jimbo Fisher Texas A&M
Gus Malzahn Auburn SEC
Kirby Smart Georgia SEC
Dan Mullen Florida SEC
Tom Herman Texas Big 12
Scott Frost Nebraska Big Ten
Mike Gundy Oklahoma State Big 12
Willie Taggart Florida State ACC
Lovie Smith Illinois Big Ten
Gary Patterson TCU Big 12

How many of those coaches are on the "hot seat", or have been within the last year?

Probably at least 8 of the 13

I'd say this is the "hot seat" list. And Lovie Smith only cooled his seat in the last few weeks.

Jim Harbaugh Michigan Big Ten
Jimbo Fisher Texas A&M
Gus Malzahn Auburn SEC
Willie Taggart Florida State ACC
Lovie Smith Illinois Big Ten

These seats are warming up

Ok so it is lip service because you are afraid he will leave? Sorry Franklin's salary should not go any higher. Money back into the program and that goes to the kids fine. If it is"family" #oneteam I'm sure the swimmers would like a decent natatorium. More lucrative bonuses ok fine (not for bowl games).

At some point paying a kings ransom for a "game" has to stop. This is not just a PSU problem.

That's fine, but an AD just doesn't walk up to a coach and say "Here, we're giving you more money because we think you deserve it." There is usually a catalyst that triggers an increase. The most common ones are: a) winning a championship (national, conference, division) of some sort; and b) a higher offer from another school. Then again, PSU has that paragon of fiscal virtue running the Athletic Department, so expect Franklin to get a major boost as the result of Rittenberg's and Thamel's public mental masturbation.

Why should it? When all the ducks are counted, FSU is going to wind up paying $25mm for Taggart not to coach. And people have problem paying the players something.

Franklin deserves every dime he gets. I hope he gets what he wants in regards to facilities and assistant coaches pay. So thankful PSU has was able to get him...

Why should it stop. Because of exactly what you said. A ****ing loser hand job is getting paid 20 million to leave a school and kids get nothing. I'm not for paying the players. I am for money being reinvested in sports and growing college athletics. More teams, good facilities, means more opportunities for high school athletes, and as schools look for more hopefully hs kids see participation and some extra bucks for college which means cheaper education.

Wasting money is part of any university's DNA. The folks that run them, whether it be on the academic or athletic side, have no concept of what money is. Barbour gets paid more because Cael wins another wrestling championship then she rewards him with a bigger contract and the loss from the wrestling program widens.

On the academic side it's more like death by a thousand little cuts.

And people wonder why Harrisburg is loathe to send more money PSU's way.

I am with ya that's why I didn't understand the question.

Do you really not believe that they should try to accommodate his wishes if it would dramatically assist his efforts???????

Yeah, why not? Thirty million here, another twenty there. Before you know it, we might be talking about real money.

No

I’ll type this one more time for you...... s l o w l y:

What I think is....... you should send him a ****ing check. A BIG ****ing check.

Is that clear enough?

Goodnight to ya Norm. I think maybe you've had enough to drink tonight. LOL I thought you were more of an in depth poster. I guess I was wrong...

LOL I wish I could...So I get your stance, Franklin is good with what he has and his wishes should be denied. Gotcha

He's getting $70mm for improvement of the football facilities. Beyond that, what, a blank check?
