125 moving Forward

I hope Scnupp beats the guy. Kid has been classy to watch, knowing he has/will be overmatched in most matches this year. Keener has been fun to watch, seems like a good kid and is from PA. I know Suriano left a gaping hole with respect to world domination, but I would like to see some kids who put in their time (on their own dime) get a few matches as well. I wouldn’t bring a kid in unless he can participate for 2 years. Hired guns are for the pros, not college. I feel the same way about the trend in football.
I don’t want to go back to the Sunderland years. The mission for Cael and crew is to win within the bounds of the rules. Having local boys is great, but you can bet Tom Ryan isn’t thinking this way and neither should Cael. Even hired guns raise the level of the program which, in turn, raises the level of kids interested in coming here.

Suriano effed us and Cael is patching and filling right now.

Honestly, sentimentality like that is what got us Jay Paterno literally a step or 2 away from being the head coach of one of the top 10 college football programs of all time.

I couldn't agree more. To me, the key is that they are a cultural fit. How many years of eligibility and/or where they are from isn't as important.

No arguments with any of your counter points CT except the “sentimentality” notion. Joe stayed 10 years too long and very few, if any, season ticket holders or alumni I know would have put up with passing the baton to Jay.

Needs to be enrolled. Semester does not need to have started.

BTW, there is a Carson Kuhn in the university directory.
Nice work, Jefe. If he's healthy like YoungsWC says this could be a very nice pickup. He did a year at OTC plus two years mission, so he's 8 years out of HS right now. He almost assuredly would qualify for a 6th year with his injury history. 26, 27 years old. Good enough to beat some top 15-20 type kids a few years ago. Healthy now and in his prime.

I'm not tempering my expectations if it's him. I'd expect he will probably similar to what Keener is giving us with the added benefit of competing at a shallower (not talking about the very top guys, just the weight class in general is the domain of underclassmen) weight class.

Can he beat Iowa's 125 and is the shutout back on the table? (if Lee red shirts)

Exactly right. There would have been major fan-base pushback had Jay ascended to that position. And, that is no swipe at Jay, the person. Perception—whether true or not—was that he had the position because of who his dad was.

Jay never got his Penn State coaching job because who his dad wss. Jay got his Penn State coaching job because his mama wanted him to have that job and Jay's mom was sleeping with Joe.;)

Seriously. Here is the full list of people who would say "I wish he were a local boy" if the incoming guy were named Daton Fix: "."

Thank you. I applaud this post.

Whether true or not? Seriously? Of course it was true. It was pure nepotism.

As a sixth generation dairy farm owner opperator I hope nepotism isn’t always bad lol
More importantly I hope there is a 7th generation! My pap had dairy cows, my dad had cows as a 2nd income but I didnt follow it. The neighbors bought the farms and I believe they are on 4th generation.

Very cool that you have that tradition and family history dating back so far.

not sure if this is independent speculation or just regurgitation of what was stated here, but there's a section in a story on Track about our 125 situation.

When Boise State dropped its wrestling program, it left a bunch of wrestlers without a home. One of them may have found one in State College, Pa.

Carson Kuhn, who went 18-8 for the Broncos in four seasons is listed as a graduate student at Penn State according to the school’s student directory. Kuhn could help the Nittany Lions at 125 pounds if he joins the team. Penn State starter Devin Schnupp is just 1-7 so far and redshirting Austin Clabaugh is the only other 125-pounder on the roster with a win.

A Penn State spokesman did not return messages seeking confirmation of Kuhn’s status with the team and he is not listed on the roster.

I saw that someone mentioned the possibility of the mystery 125 pounder possibly being Bresser. I see he's wrestling for Oregon St at the Midlands, so it can't be him.

Pyles called Cael wondering if Cael had a plan.

Room Perspective: All I will say on this matter...the room was full, at 37 wrestlers, but with Yanovich's unfortunate departure, there is one opening.

Bigger picture, and forward looking...only 4 Sr's on the roster, and with more than 4 coming in, there will be others leaving prior to next season, but that's a discussion for another day.
