I'm sure this has been discussed already but is Cassar beating McCutcheon or is Matt in dog house for some reason?

He walked out with Zain as Co-Captains yesterday so, my guess would be no. I don't see him as the kind of guy to find the doghouse now after never finding it before. Just MHO

Reports are Cassar won the wrestle off.
I don't think Cutch would have lost Sunday.
It looked like Bo and Cassar had been scrapping with each other all morning

Yeah, I saw that on Sunday (co-captain) and thought maybe Matt would be going yesterday. I know he's a good young man - just wondering if there was more to the story. Thought Cassar should have won the match yesterday but obviously didn't. May the best guy win the wrestle offs - that's one of the beauties of wrestling, not too much subjectivity on who should be "playing".

I think wrestle off results should be taken with a grain of salt. I’m sure they practice with each other every day and know how each other wrestle. Open tournaments and against other competition should be the main deciding factor for the starting spot. For example when Brill beat BO or Gulibon losing the one year to Dinmore. Wrestle offs should just be good for the first couple duals of the year if there is competition in the room, which is happening right now. I’m obviously a Cutch/Nolf fan being a Young Guns guy but the next couple weeks should be telling.

I’d also expect Lee to wrestle before the end of the year. Don’t think Cortez is going to cut it for the points we will need at NCAAs.

Agree, tourney/match performance should also be part of starter decision especially if wrestle offs are very close.

My personal opinion is Cutch found a way to win by wearing guys down and capitalizing on better conditioning/dieting. Cassar is visibly more athletic and seems to have similar if not better strength + "upside". That being said, does anyone think this is a way to give beard a reshirt next year? Beard looks ready to me but Cassar +1 full year of D1 experience might be reason enough to not burn it right away, i.e. Lee, Cortez situation..

Looking back to last year, Cortez was more of a hammer on top at 133 and I don't think he has the same pinning ability up a weight, but also looks a lot better on his feet at the same time. I would love to see Lee burn his shirt and go but I'm not ready to write Cortez off. He a top 20 guy by the end of the year IMO.

On a side note, I went to the OSU vs. ASU Dual Meet on Sunday (live in Columbus but a diehard PSU fan, raised in PA). I thought ASU would look off considering the time difference, road trip, cold weather, hotel sleeping etc. They were the better conditioned team by far. Keshawn Hayes was done in the 3rd and if the match were 30 seconds longer would have most likely lost. Micah looked really bad sans the first 22 seconds of the match. BoJo is just outmatched with Zahid although I think Zahid only spends one more year at 74 then moves up (he is bigger in person). Pletcher was underwhelming with Nasir being the aggressor the whole time and just coming up unlucky in the last scramble. The last three matches were irrelevant as it was essentially Varsity vs JV at that point, but up until then ASU looked like a better coached and conditioned team.

Would not shock me if Michigan and OKst get past them this year.

Cassar has now wrestled a grand total of 2 collegiate wrestling matches in PSU singlet. This comes after spending the biggest part of the last 2 1/2 years recovering shoulder surgery.

Give the kid a chance to shake off the rust and gain experience. In the mean time Cutch can stay sharp by wrestling in opens.

By late January, if it appears Cassar can't get us what we need in March, Cutch will be ready to step in.

Anyone have any updates on Nico vs Cassar or vs Cutch in the room ??

Haven't seen anything posted - that could help to shine a light on things.

Thanks.

Jack, well said. I agree. However without backseat drivers, message boards would not be needed or no f*n or just the same Carton-v-Pletcher jokes. Haven't we all realized yet that message board posters know more than undefeated 4x National Champions and 6x National Champion coaches?

No love for my guy Rasheed :(

I'll give him some love, as he deserves it...another awesome young man that sacrifices and does everything right.

Problem this year is that he's undersized and growing into the weight. Strength/size will be something he deals with all year, though we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out for the remainder of 17-18...I guess anything's possible, right? First things first though...here's hoping his injury wasn't too serious.

Different story next year, as we'll have 2 quality guys battling for the weight.

Is it safe to assume he’s being asked to manage weight/descent to be a 184 backup in the event Bo gets dinged?

Of course he'll be on campus, and wrestling in tournaments as a RS.
At this point in the season, undoubtedly--but I'm sure the folks here will find occasion to assert his dominance in the room, clamor to pull the shirt, etc etc. ;-p

Very good question!! I don't know...though given the chance, I'll ask.

Theoretically-speaking, a full-sized 197 can get to 184 in 5 weeks, with the required controlled descent, and assuming (though I'm positive in this case) the wrestler certified at 184. Since there's no longer the February 15 rule for being at the required weight, he'd have to start the descent no later than the last week in January. All that said...here's hoping NONE of our guys face season-ending injuries this year.

That was my impression concerning Ohio State as well. It was a performance that should have FLO re-evaluating their hero worship.

I had wondered the same thing, which just makes watching his situation all the more painful as a fan. Really wishing him good health and a way into the postseason at least once during his college career. If 197 is his target this year and/or next year, I hope he can go for it 100%.

But yeah, with 3 solid guys at 197,one should stay close enough to 184 should a Plan B be necessary.

EDIT: But it can't be easy to be the backup 184 and 285 at the same time, either. ;)

At the end of the process, the bolded is the only thing that counts in making the final decision.

The above statement does not necessarily apply to guys currently on redshirt.

I've wondered about the possibility next year of Bo going up to 197 and Rasheed wrestling 184. Rasheed is a great talent! So is Cassar and both won't be able to be in the line-up. But, if Bo could do at 197 like Quentin did (similar builds and weight progressions), I think Rasheed at 184 might score more than Cassar at 197.

I'll say that I have always subscribed to this kind of thinking in the past. And I certainly do not claim to watch all PSU practices, but I was at one a week ago and Nolf was the guy rolling with Cutch. Again, take it FWIW, but it's not like these guys exclusively wrestle each other because they are at the same weight.

It's not only Nolf who wrestles different-weight guys. I have heard that Nico is willing to take a beatdown from anyone, any weight. In the room. Fake spyker can confirm this.

I am uncertain of the Cortez assessment. Tyler Smith missed AA last year by 1 match and Cortez dominated the match Sunday. I am becoming more excited about the Cortez possibilities.

The compare/contrast of Cutch and Cassar is not only wrestle offs and open tournament performances, but the staff is seeing each every day in the room against the other guys. There are more than one or two data points.

That was not Tyler Smith he wrestled. It was backup Matt Kolonia.
