2017 Recruiting Class Thread

For the first time in what feels like forever, it feels great to be trending up and closing strongly on a class.

Anthony McFarland named a final three:

Alabama
UMD
U of Miami

Read that the Alabama offer may not be commitable. Most are pointing to Miami.

Tom Loy with a CB of Wade to WVU. Wiltfong did an interview with him and he and Fitz haven't changed their picks from PSU.

Wade played a little bit of linebacker at the beginning of the season, too. He's as versatile a recruit as we would have had in quite a while. I know it's a bad word around here, but his versatility is Peppers-esque.

I don't see it that way. He's a CB all the way, with the possibility of returning kicks as well. I guess he could play Safety, but we have bigger CB's on the roster that are likely better suited to move to Safety if the team needs them.

Peppers is much larger framed and thus has played some LB, but his NFL position is likely Safety..

Nah. He's a ball hawk. I think he would terrorize QBs if could could roam the field. He also has crazy coverage skills, but man the way he breaks on the ball

Yep, if he was the 12th defender and could just roam the field. But unfortunately our defense gives specific responsibilities to each player and CB is the one Wade is slotted for. So he, and the defense, can utilize those crazy coverage skills.

No doubt, for a high school player, he has a very thick build. But even in a single A high school game he looks pretty small with respect to height.

I thought Malik did?
People can tag them whatever they want.......

But:

If the traditional "SS" is a guy who plays closer to the box (more often), has run game responsibilities (more often), generally has his pass coverage responsibilities skewed towards the center of the field, rarely is responsible for man coverage on a slot or flanker or split end, is the last guy (from the group of CBs, FS, SS) to be placed in coverage responsibilities - and the first (from the group of CBs, FS, SS) to have specific
"in the box" run responsibilities, and is more likely to have specific assignments against option based run offenses............

Then Allen was the "SS".

I have no idea what anyone might want to call them - including the PSU D staff - but that is the role Allen played (and Golden, just the opposite)

All true.

Great post BTW.. Exactly my logic and the text book definiton of SS vs. FS. Our old Regime deemed the SS the Hero position but that defense was a different scheme altogether... Wade is a cover corner think Antoine Winfield.

Wade is a football player. What sets him apart from a lot if players is his strength. Most kids his size aren't as strong as him. I could see him playing a hybrid role.

Still not sure how we fit both him and Webb in.

Everybody says that these are must-takes, that you always make room for, no matter what. I don't know how you make spaces open up magically unless you process.

The last three words of your comment are key. See: SEC.

This is no the type of move that we typically see from a guy committing to Penn State. An announcement party open to all with a COVER charge? This seems like SEC to me. I assume Tennessee is still in play?

Think it's PSU vs WVU
I did also until I read that tweet. I know think it's Tenn, then.............WVU, then............? Love to get him but we've got a great class with the few scholarships that were available so I'll not be that bothered if he goes elsewhere. JMO.

Or, more likely, the kid and his family had to rent out a venue so that he can celebrate with his friends and loved ones, but they might not be able to afford the full cost of the facility and are asking for some help to offset the cost.

I don't think that says anything one way or another about his likelihood to come to Penn State, and I certainly don't agree with the insinuation that it doesn't make him Penn State material.

Pitt fans re: Wade showing that class they are so well known for.

HailToPitt1985
Senior

He's such an immature, f'ed up kid, I don't want that at Pitt, no matter how good he and his screwball old man think he is. Narduzzi recruits kids with character who want to play for Pitt. He fits none of that. He's dead to me.

This may help with Swift if he was hoping to play a lot as a freshman.

I can't read the Coach's minds (neither can anyone else).......but my gut feel has ALWAYS been that I don't think the staff was ever "all in" wrt Swift being an extremely high-value-added recruiting target

If he says "Hey, I want to come to PSU"....and there is room......maybe they take him
Of course, you "recruit" all the top kids in your region (unless you find that some kid is just a complete azzhole)........because you never know what could happen in the two/three years while the kid is going through the recruiting process .........but I doubt there will be any sleep lost if the kid ends up a Bulldog

R.....E.....L.....A.....X

1 - He's just a kid
2 - It is HIGHLY likely that the "target audience" for that thing was his buddies/family/etc

Not that different from anyone else having - let's say - a Holiday get together - and sending out "e-invites".......which, I assume, is not an uncommon occurrence for anyone on the board

With three WR's this year, I doubt the staff cares about Webb as much as Swift.

I view Swift as Miles Sanders+ due to his excellent pass receiving skills. And Swift has excelled for four years against a very high level of competition. Having said that (reminded myself of the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode about that phrase), I don't think Swift is a must get this cycle and a similar back, Ricky Slade, is looking real good for PSU in '18.
