2017 World Championships Thread

I'm afraid no throw. Ragan got TF'ed by the Japanese gal.
The brackets are up for Friday's competition.
57 Kg--Gilman gets a guy from UKR and if he wins that possibly an Iranian in R16
61 Kg--Stieber gets a bye and then possibly a Russian next. If he wins that he could get former world champ Khinchegashvili in quarters. Tough draw!
86 Kg--Cox gets a German in first round and second round the winner between a guy from Ivory Coast and one from Finland (that's of interest to me as I lived 15 years in Ivory Coast--interesting to see they got a qualifier!)
125 Kg--Gwiz gets a guy from Moldova 1st round and likely a Hungarian in 2nd.

Gilman up on Mat 2 vs Yatsenko from UKR.
Gilman looked like he head pinched for two but didn't get points, no challenge, UKR gets 2 instead, has lace but can't turn Gilman. 2-0 UKR.
Gilman ties it going behind near edge, has criteria, but lots more points likely in this one,
UKR with leg but Gilman manages to stalemate. Break.
Gilman with a leg, pushes out for 3-2 lead.
Gilman with a leg again, gets TD near edge, leads 5-2.
Great scramble somehow manages to end in stalemate. 19 seconds left.
Gilman hangs on, nice win, controlled, was aggressor all match. 5-2 final.

Gwiz up 6-0 quickly vs Romanov MDA.
Another TD and lace for a 10-0 tech.

Cox and Stieber will be up next but still no mat assignments, so not for a bit.

EDIT: Check that, I think both have first round byes. No US guys for a bit.

NLWC's Jamie Espinal (Puerto Rico) on mat 4, up 10-2 early second. Casey in his corner. Finishes with a 13-2 tech.

Stieber will be on Mat 4 in four matches.

Morning Dunke! You're it, surprised it's so quiet here.

Stieber in hole on mat 4 vs Rashidov (RUS)

And Cox will come up on mat 2 in 4 vs Dudarov (GER)

Steiber down 5-0, ankle pick, turn, and pushout.
Yeow. Duckunder TD for Rashidov, two guts and it's over, 11-0.

streebler looked very pasty white, apparently the eclipse affected him....

got spanked hard by RUS, even so high chance he gets pulled back in

USA 2-1 on day so far

I'm here and appreciating the updates as I don't have a Track subscription. I may drop Flo and get Track since Flo continues to disappoint.
One Track subscription won't do it, they're selling on a per-event basis, $10 per.

RUS has Khinchegashvili next, so not exactly a given that Stieber gets pulled back in. Still, Rashidov looked pretty good in taking out Stieber.

After Cox, now on deck on mat 2, Gilman will be up on mat 3 in about 4 matches vs Atrinagharchi (Iran).

Re Stieber, clutch gene or no, when you make your living winning 11-10 matches, you're going to lose from time to time. Not exactly a great business model.

Cox up on mat 2.
GER tries an arm spin, Cox grabs the head but can't throw, ends a stalemate.
Cox down 1-0 after being put on on clock. Nearly had an exposure on edge.
GER 1-0 at break.
Cox with double unders, trying but can't get exposure. GER on clock.
Cox with a crazy tight cradle but can't turn it, GER bellies out. Gets two though, leads 2-1.
Cox goes behind for another two, leads 4-1.
Cox tacks on a TD off a single for a 6-1 finish.

cox didnt give up a TD at the olympics??? guy is so tough to score on. never in danger one bit

marches on.
USA 3-1

Lots of commentary on Twitter that Cox is favoring knee but I didn't see that, I think Cox just picks his spots and makes the most of them. Just like in folk, he doesn't score nearly as much as he can, he just wins.

Gilman up on mat 2 vs Atrinagharchi (Iran).
Ref stops to warn Gilman for rough hands. No shots a minute in, all hand fighting, someone's going on clock soon.
Gilman with a leg but can't convert, amazing defense from Iran. 1-0 Gilman at break on a shot clock point.
Push out Gilman after a low single makes it 2-0.
Gilman in again on leg, holds for stalemate. 2 minutes left.
Another leg for Gilman, another stalemate.
Ditto. 40 seconds left.
Late scramble almost looks like 2 for Iran (which would be a win on criteria); ref gives the two, white paddled, clock runs out, Iran challenges.
Challenge denied, Gilman wins 3-0. Great defense in the end, Iran had him dead to rights and Gilman grabbed an ankle.

Iranian tried to force Gilman to walk to him to shake hands. Dude, you obviously don't know Gilman.

In likely order, up next

Mat 2 (in hole)
Nicholas Gwiazdowski (United State)
Daniel Ligeti (Hungary)

Mat 1
J`Den Cox (United State)
Ville Tapa Heino (Finland)

Mat 4
Nodirjon Safarov (Uzbekistan)
Thomas Gilman (United State)

Was Stieber sick or was it an average official? Probably a combination of both

With those two wins I think Gilman has outdone the last bunch of US 57kgs in some time, certainly Ramos, certainly Dennis.

On mat 4, this opinion seems to be shared by many. Didn't see it myself but Russia's 86kg Valiev saved by refs.

Gwiz quick two vs Legeti, Hungary.
Can't tell whether Gwiz is maybe thinner but he looks more active.
Gets to a leg, gets behind, 4-0.
Gets to the leg again, goes through back door, can't convert, stalemate.
Goes behind for another two right before break. 6-0.
Gwiz easily gets to leg, Hungary looking to lift, can't, stalemate.
Hungary with a pushout, 6-1.
Both guys look a little winded but Gwiz keeps getting to legs and converting. 10-1. Last two was a nice double. Ends 10-1. Solid win.
