Well, okay, but after a de-commit, does the kid ever end up back at the original school? pretty rare, I think

That's what I was thinking. Along those lines, I wonder what Franklin has told Fields since he decommitted.

If Coach Franklin is smart, and I think he is, he probably told Fields that the door remains open and then goes out to find a replacement (when it closes).

Parsons has already done it once this year and being from Harrisburg, I think he will again

It is rare. Aubrey Solomon did it last year with Michigan so it does happen. Doubt Fields recommits, slight chance that Parsons does IMO.

Rasheed Walker, the No. 14 offensive tackle in the nation, continues to look at a variety of schools, but as the spring evaluation period closed and the transition to summer is underway, his recruitment is taking shape.

From what I am hearing, the two schools beginning to separate themselves are Penn State and Virginia Tech. He also had Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio State and Rutgers in his top six, but the relationships with the coaching staff and familiarity with players at Penn State and Virginia Tech pushed both of them up.

Walker knows Penn State and Virginia Tech have immediate needs at offensive tackle, and both are poised to be conference title contenders in the coming years.

Ohio State remains a possibility, but the Buckeyes are recruiting other offensive linemen harder than Wallace.

During an interview in late April, Walker expressed an interest in visiting North Carolina, Penn State, LSU and Florida in the summer, and those trips could take place. However, since Walker is pretty far along in his recruitment, and since Florida and LSU came in late, it will be hard for both of them to get involved.

Now, a lot of signals point toward Penn State, but I was told Virginia Tech remains a real contender and not to rule out North Carolina.

Interesting. I still think we get Walker but thought it was more of a done deal than it seems. Just hope it doesn't cost is Zubovic. and then we don't get Walker ... I like BZ a lot. IMO could be like Miranda. Tough as nails

Look at Zubovic's offers (regional) vs Walker's (national). BZ isn't close to the prospect RW is.

Get Walker and I don't care what happens with BZ.

Patterson's performance at the Elite 11 Finals drew praise from observers. SBNation's Bud Elliott had plenty to say:

"This was my first time seeing QB Quincy Patterson, the Virginia Tech commit from Chicago," Elliott wrote. "And I came away impressed by a player with a strong arm, paired with a smooth release. He's a shotmaker and will get better as his footwork becomes more consistent. He could be dangerous in Justin Fuente's offense."

"Virginia Tech commit Quincy Patterson had [the] second or third best day [among QBs] so far," added colleague Morgan Moriarty. "He showed great anticipation and accuracy on intermediate throws, and he had no interceptions. He had some great ball placement, as well."

"Quincy Patterson was a pleasant surprise," said the outlet's Mike Felder. "Big arm with control to push it everywhere he wants, and got better as the day went on getting more reps. The deep ball is easy, hits seam with power and accuracy. Eye discipline is there. Footwork is coming."

Patterson is just a three-star and the No. 24 dual-threat quarterback nationally, but had the event happened before the latest round of rankings updates for Rivals.com, there's a good chance it would have been enough to bump him up just a bit. With the trajectory that Patterson's Summer is on, he's likely to impress in Oregon, and prove that he deserves to keep moving on up.

The Hokies are comfortable in their ability to hold onto his commitment, and he should be an important piece of the program going forward.

What were Miranda's offers.... regional . And word is he's been a beast already

And I didn't say I don't want Walker.... I said it seems it may not be the lock I thought it was 2 weeks ago

Don't use one example to try and argue that a recruit with middling offers is as good as a recruit with national offers. 9 times out of 10, the recruit with the lesser offers isn't as good of a player. You named the 1. Give me the guy that the power programs want.

Besides that, I think BZ is one of those home town kids that has been brain washed with the Pitt propaganda.

Not sure if this is germane, but I've been thinking of Big John Thompson's recruitment of Kenny Anderson. Everyone had Anderson going to Georgetown and then he didn't, basically because Thompson wouldn't massage Anderson's ego. Thompson: "If Kenny Anderson had wanted to come to Georgetown, he would have come to Georgetown." I haven't given up on Fields, and I'm not saying he's a difficult prima donna in the the way I see Anderson, but there definitely seems to be something unhealthy about successful professionals like Thompson and Franklin having to call a high school junior every other day to ask him to come to your university.

Probably, we would love to have you as part of our team and you know what we offer. You were the only QB we were recruiting. But now since we are no longer engaged, I will be recruiting another QB.

(Note: All these players have been followed by a Penn State coach on Twitter)

Devin Leary — Sicklerville, NJ
Height/Weight: 6-foot-2, 189 pounds

Status: Committed to NC State

Probably the most popular name out there, Leary has been killing it on the camp scene. He just earned his way to the Elite 11 finals at The Opening, and was lauded for his arm strength at the camp. He’s also been extremely productive at the high school level, throwing 48 touchdowns last season to just four interceptions en route to a 12-0 record. Some would say he’s a gamer.

While his arm talent and intangibles seem great, I think there’s definitely a question of how well he fits into Joe Moorhead’s offense. You don’t need a quarterback who can run, but having a legit dual-threat back there definitely helps. Granted, Leary isn’t a statue, but he’s not the most nimble guy in the world.

Quincy Patterson — Chicago, Ill
Height/Weight: 6-foot-4, 232 pounds

Status: Committed to Virginia Tech

Patterson is the only quarterback on this list who was actually offered by Penn State, and oddly enough, he landed an offer from the Nittany Lions at the same camp Justin Fields did. Like Fields, he’s a big, athletic kid, and should thrive in a zone-read offense.

It remains to be seen if Penn State “re-offers” the Chicago native, but if his twitter is any indication, he’s staying true to the Hokies.

Jace Ruder — Norton, KS
Height/Weight: 6-foot-3, 205 pounds

Status: Uncommitted

Ruder has an interesting backstory. He’s from rural Kansas — like, seriously, he’s 4.5 hours from the nearest airport — so his recruitment got off to a slow start. He ended up committing to Tulsa, but eventually Ruder blew up, landing offers from Florida State, North Carolina, Baylor and Ole Miss all within the last month. After the offer from the Seminoles, Ruder re-opened his recruitment, and will be taking visits this summer.

Unlike someone like Leary who’s ready to compete from day one, Ruder will need some time to learn the nuances of being a quarterback. His passing stats won’t blow anybody away — 32/18 TD-to-INT ratio with a completion rate of just 50% — but this is a really, really talented kid. Great size, strong arm, and a very good athlete. In my mind, which doesn’t account for much, he’s exactly what a quarterback in Moorhead’s offense should look like.

Allan Walters — Hightstown, NJ
Height/Weight: 6-foot-1, 200 pounds

Status: Committed to Vanderbilt

Walters was in the mix for an offer back in the fall, but once the Fields hype train got rolling, things obviously quieted down. He ended up committing to Vanderbilt, but if the Nittany Lions were to come calling again, I’d imagine Penn State could get themselves back in the mix. That being said, I’d expect Leary to get a call before Walters.

The staff knows more about these situations than we do. I wonder how long ago they knew this was likely to happen, and if so, if they start to lay groundwork quietly for the next move.

Walters is an interesting candidate. Had offers from Alabama, Michigan, Arkansas, Louisville, Miss State, Ole Miss, and a host of others. Did camp at PSU last Summer. Broke his collarbone in his third game last season, but threw for 800 yds in those games. Not overly mobile.

Would be great if they could flip Leary. Assume those wheels are in motion.

Of the four, Ruder sounds the most intriguing. Small town, great athlete, needs to marinade a bit, which is good with the PSU QB depth, Leary not as mobile but great arm, Patterson sounds like a DE/LB. another MRob? CJF leave Vandy alone!

That would make sense, and that's what I would expect from Franklin. The mantra from Franklin is that it's about relationships. He wants kids who are all in. I don't see Franklin begging Fields to come to Penn State, calling him regularly, or holding a spot for him. If Fields wants to be at Penn State, he should come back to Franklin. Otherwise, Franklin needs to focus on the next guy.

Four-star prospect Devin Leary would be my new top target if I were James Franklin, and it appears he just might be. This is due to his recent Twitter followers/followings consisting of Penn State Football coaches, players, and commits.

Devin Leary is another quarterback that Penn State evaluated last summer, but did not offer. He committed to NC State in April, but a Penn State offer could certainly shake things up.

Leary competed at the Elite 11 this past weekend and earned an invited to The Opening finals later this month. Leary possesses one of the strongest arms in the country and throws a very pretty deep ball. As Penn State fans saw last year the deep ball is a vital part of Joe Moorhead’s offense.

Devin Leary is sneaky athletic for his six-foot-two, 190-pound build. Hopefully, if the Nittany Lions pursue Leary they will be able to flip him from the Wolfpack. It should be noted that his older brother is a Penn State alum.

Well, call it rationalizing, but PSU does not/did not NEED a stud QB in the 2018 class.

To start the 2018 season, the roster projects to having Trace with 1 year, Tommy Stevens with 2 years, and Clifford likely with 4 years of eligibility. (Zembiec may not be starting QB material). Some of the Plan B guys mentioned above could be just fine to come in, learn, and develop.

I mostly agree but the one thing that I always think about is injury or transfer of existing QB or a QB not developing as projected (Zembiec currently) so I like to get a QB in every class if possible

If....IF...you could get someone of the quality of Leary....to grab a Elite 11 finalist as your "Plan B" QB recruit would be the most Franklin thing ever.

Devin Leary has that elusive combination of insane HS production with lights-out camp performances, this could really work out pretty well.

Also check out these measurables on Jace Ruder. Physically not all that different than JF:

Despite the decommitment from Fields, he is still likely to be the number one QB target on Penn State's board. I wouldn't say we are the favorite to land this fine your man, but we aren't out of the running yet either. Maybe CJF doesn't want to wait until LOI day to find out, and we get a commitment from another stud QB. Lets just let this play out.
I think CJF no longer has Fields #1 on the board Just my opinion though

I'd be interested to know about his grades and football IQ

Sean Fitz says "It's not like Cam Newton is recruiting him to Auburn, but he is advising him"

Yea, that's it.^^ At least I have convinced myself that's who had the most sway on this decision.

Eh, if he ends up at Auburn then the fix really is in. Nothing you can do about it.

I don't think we need a quarterback in this class. Only exception would be an MRob type player that can contribute all over the field when not needed at quarterback and only if that player is ok with an MRob type role.
