2019 weight class moves?

Didn't look that way to me. Valencia is the biggest 174 pounder I've ever seen. That seemed to be the consensus in Cleveland. He was considerably bigger than every other wrestler at the weight.

I met hall. He looks about 157. Valencia might be the biggest. That does not change the fact that hall is small for 174.

Why did hall look small last year?

Can you name any on at 174 who looks smaller than hall?

I know what I weigh, and guessing I'm with Mark a bit more than you. Nice-sized 174.

He is small for 174. Just look at him next to Valencia or jordan. Tell me any 174 who looks smaller than hall.

Hall can handle it but don't kid yourself into thinking he is not small for that weight.

Hayes already shirted, so I don't understand him being part of any redshirt reload.

He could be put on an S&C plan to gain 15+ lb this offseason. That's not unchartered territory with athletes.

Moving him to 157 makes sense. If Jordan drops, OSU has 4 legitimate finalist candidates (141, 149, 184, 197) and an AA lock at 133. If Hayes can make the podium, and they can get 2 more guys to join him, they're in range if something goes wrong for us.

And, if Hayes adds weight to 157, then Sasso goes 149 in 2020.

I wouldn’t call 133 a lock to be AA. When you wrestle to win 3-2, those can swing wrong the way easily. Ask dean heil.... who was much better than Pletcher IMO. Add in suriano and fix..... I think may even wager he doesn’t AA.

The Jordans have given it all to tOSU and to Ryan. MJo went to 141 for cry'n out loud for the good of the team. Lets face it if MJo is going to get a championship his best chance is at 149 next year. Nolf, hidlay, kemdawg are just better than anything 149 has.

Add in Pantaleo, Joe Smith (if he returns to 157), Shields, Berger, Deakin ... either Ohio State guy might be capped in the 6-8 range at 157.

Hayes can solve the whole thing and beat MJo in a wrestle off. But something suggests to me that MJo knows where he stands against Hayes and is why this info is out there.
So you're saying Ohio State held an Avoid Zain Wrestle-off this year and could hold an Avoid Jason Wrestle-off next year ...

That might well prove true. Though you gotta think Ohio State plans its season as if they think he's a lock to place, right?

174 is 174.
I respectively disagree with that. Especially when a kid takes a mat 5-10 pounds heavier after weigh ins who was cutting down versus the 74 not cutting and remaining at 74.

If you don’t think that 5-10 extra pounds creates an advantage then you’ve never wrestled before. I’m not saying that as an attack or towards you directly, I just mean in general.

That looked more like 20 pounds that Zahid had on Mark, and maybe everyone else. Bigger than anyone I have ever seen at that weight before and frankly it's a total mystery how he made weight.

So, assuming Myles Martin RS's, Zahid will be Bo's biggest challenger next year, right? Zahid's done pretty well against Bo. I found 2 recent videos of Bo losing 2-1 and 8-2 to Zahid.
Ouch! Were they both freestyle matches?

I agree, I bet Hall could certify for 165 if he already wasn't. Bigger guys have bigger frames and generally more strength and leverage. OTOH, the beauty of wrestling is each guy takes the mat and uses his strengths to his advantages. Guys come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

We all know Zahid had a huge size advantage when everyone agrees that it is best to wrestle him in the semi-finals on Friday night instead of the Final on Saturday night.

Bo took one? I could not find that video...
Nope. Best of 3, but Zahid won 2 so they didn't wrestle a 3rd. Everyone is talking about his size, but dude is scary quick, and squeaky clean on finishes. As DT put it last Saturday, Zahid is probably the most under rated wrestler in the country.

THIS^^^ Bo Jordan is also big, but he isn't anywhere near as quick and crisp as Zahid.

at 59 min mark they talk Cassar and CP says he is staying. However, in bantering back and forth, infers that schools are contacting him about going. The inference is that there could be shady goings on.
Discussion about Cassar over on Scarlet Knights. After just a few messages of back and forth, wngarbarini, who seems to be in the know (even puppet-like for information/disinformation), shuts it down with, "Who cares. He is not coming here." That suggests to me that this conversation has been had over there, and either Anthony has told them that he's not interested, or Goodale has said, "We're not touching that."

Cassar to Rutgers, for that to make sense, he would need to get a 6th year from the NCAA (likely) and a waiver from the B1G (not likely, but who knows). No waiver and he would have one year of wrestling left if he got a 6th year, in that case, stay at PSU where he starts at 197 in 2020.

I bet Cassar stays and battles Shak for the starting job, would not be surprised if he is the starter next year.

Just trying to make a point. Pretty sure I get what everyone is saying :), Nice veiled, aggressive post, by the way.

At weigh-in, the guys weigh very close to the same, excepting heavyweights. Neither the coaches or wrestlers make excuses about any opponent's weight. Why is that, do you think? In fact, Coach has stated publicly that Mark is a full-size 174.

I have eyes too, and Zahid looks bigger, but won't say anything beyond that. As far as some guys cutting more than others, that's been around since the beginning of wrestling, and is a double-edged sword. It saps energy, especially when extreme, yet gives the advantage when there's time to re-hydrate and eat. It's why many say catching an opponent Friday Night vs Saturday Night has benefits. Certification rules have created a safer way to determine a wrestler's minimum weight, so both Mark and Zahid, in fact all wrestlers, followed the same procedure to determined certified weight, then had 1-hour or 2-hour weigh-ins throughout the regular season, both ending undefeated.

My sense is that too much is made of this, and it sounds sour-grapish to me.

Likelihood of first part vs. 2nd part: 20-1?

You see it more in HS when a kid cuts down for postseason. There can be a huge strength difference and difference in body size when you watch some kids. So I disagree on 174 is 174.

However in this case I don’t think Hall is as “small” as people think he is and ASU has said Zahid isn’t as “big” as everyone says. I will admit though Zahid looks bigger. Unless his brother can’t hold 165 or he wants to wrestle Nickal, I don’t expect them to bump up.

Anthony has had a pretty lackluster career so far given his HS cred (tech'd iMar in FS get crying out loud). The easy guess is he's cutting too much, but that may be too easy, lots can happen to body and mind in those youthful years....

Ah, to be young, and in college (at ASU, no less...)

I'm with Roar on this. Thought he was small until I was standing next to him. Mark is NOT an undersized 174. Just looks that way on TV. I've opined before it is because of his slightly bowed legs and long torso, but that's just me talking out of my as#. He looked small to me watching him and then, in person, wow. He's not.

The thing with Zahid also is the advantage to wrestling in the finals. It’s why us Ohio State fans wanted Tomasello to face Lee in the finals. When these guys don’t have to weigh in again from the morning, and their matches don’t start until at least 8pm, they are gonna be HUGE compared to what they would be facing them after 1 hour at Amy other part of the season. Valencia was the 4th to to the last match, so he wrestled around 9:30 or so. How much weight do you think he put on over 12 hours? I bet you a lot. It’s a crazy advantage these guys cutting hard have if they make it to he finals. It’s an incredible disadvantage they have in the prelims and quarters when they have an hour. It’s why seeding is crucial for these types of guys. And it’s why you often times see head scratching close matches earlier in the tournament for them and they destroying people their last 2 matches.

If Ohio State punts next year and red shirts any combination of McKenna, Pletcher, and Martin - Do you see us RS any of our upperclassman?

Mark Hall's the only one that hasn't taken a shirt. Lee too, but you said upperclassmen. Surprised if both aren't in the line-up.

quick review please.

1. what time is weigh-in on Sat NCAAs?

2. Is there a weight allowance...does 174 mean 174 precisely?
One hour or sooner on Saturday.

On Saturday, they've received a total allowance of 2 pounds, so the number is 176 for the 174 pound weight class...(Note: 1 pound allowance Friday, another on Saturday).
