That’s a nice analysis. Thanks for sharing. I hadn’t thought about the fact that strong offensive catchers are worth less in the NL. Since they miss 25% of games for rest and have no other spot (ex: DH in AL), a team really loses out on a lot of production.
Watching the off season carefully. Would you rather have Springer, a catching tandem of Knapp and someone like Suzuki plus a # 3 starter and bull pen pieces while letting JT walk. I don't care about the $$$, Mr. crazy $$$ appears to. With JT, Didi, Jake, Robertson off the books that represents over 60M plus other pieces like Neris, Phelps, Morgan there should be $$$ to spend as long as "crazy money" doesn't feel the need to slash PR.
Consensus expectations are for the DH to be universal going forward, so he would have the same opportunity in the NLThat’s a nice analysis. Thanks for sharing. In seeing that, my thought is an AL team is where he’ll land. There’s just more mutual value there as he ages.
I just assumed this dysfunction was widely known. There are obvious and deep issues for a franchise to be as historically dysfunctional as the Phils have been. This organization is a train wreck. Two days ago they put out a detailed release supporting the notion of Bobby Abreu for the Hall of Fame. Provided a lot of statistics and metrics showing where Bobby sat in a number of categories. No big deal, right?
But when the campaign for Dick Allen previously asked if they would do the same for Allen, the Phillies responded that stumping for one of their own players was not appropriate. Instead, they made the move to retire his number. Then they turn around and release this missive on Bobby, stumping for his election.
This, the layoffs of 80 staffers in the office, the nonsense around Klentak and McPhail, their crying poverty, the JT debacle, etc., it’s one thing after another with this collection of idiots. At some point, the franchise in RF is going to get really cranky. At that point, they are going to have a BIG problem on their hands.

For a minute there, I thought you were talking about the Eagles.
My hunch is that the requests went to different people in the organization and nobody is communicating. The Allen refusal is beyond belief. It’s just that they could take two completely different approaches and change after being asked to do the same for Dick Allen.

So much for the ‘we have the richest owner in baseball’ angle![]()
Sources: Phillies open to trade offers for Wheeler
The Phillies have communicated to other teams that they are facing a financial crunch and are open to offers for their second-highest-paid player, starting pitcher Zack Wheeler, according to sources.www.espn.com

Was very popular right here on this very message boardI'm unaware of anyone that promoted or suggested that angle.

Pretty accurate. It's not that he's the richest, it's that he was willing to spend what he has. That was welcomed by Phillies fans who have not always seen management willing to spend in the past. Not my memory of what was written. Folks talked about spending "stupid money," as that was a quote by the managing partner of the Phillies. And the managing parter is very well off, so there have been comments about how spending this or that wouldn't impact his cash flow/bottom line/etc. However, while John Middleton, the managing partner, is in the upper echelon, anyone that did any research realized that he was not the richest owner in baseball. I really do feel that you have mischaracterized things that were posted about Middleton.
Touché. Agreed, his apparent willingness to spend was what was being discussed, not his actual level of wealthPretty accurate. And of course now the question is, did he overspend on Harper?Touché. Agreed, his apparent willingness to spend was what was being discussed, not his actual level of wealth

Very possible.
As long as it doesn't stop them from making quality signings in the coming years.Well it depends. For year 1, he made them an absolute $hitton. They have a model that shows how much each extra butt in a seat brings in for ticket cost, parking, concessions, merchandise, etc. Its a lot more than you think. That doesn’t count advertising that is bought late, etc. So, if 1 million extra butts came through that first year, it’s enormous. Now, last year zilch and maybe half this year. But they made a mountain the first year which dwarfed what they paid him. But they are going into a deep freeze
