2021 NCAAs

I think Beard was welcoming the breather...

Well, he IS doing a lot of work with all of these takedowns.

That was the most work he's done all year in the third. Great match for him.

Whatever he did between the Nate Jackson match and today...more of that, please. His gas tank was far and away his biggest weakness, and knock on wood, he seems to have solved that to some degree.

Kerk will likely lose to gable, but people dunking on him after Big 10s are in for a long 4 years

I'm an incurable optimist. In 2019 Steveson was being touted as the next guy to win four championships. He was even talking about it himself. Then he lost to Cassar. Maybe Gable has matured since then and has gained better focus. I can't help but look through my blue and white glasses.

I also realize Steveson could still win four thanks to the free year.

Besides the obvious one, the rest of the guys are wrestling great! Robbie needs to go on a run tomorrow and the real good shot the rest of the boys are getting to semis. Obviously Kerk has a tough one but man I’m proud that he’s out there competing like he is with the injury and layoff

Same, should have pulled him out of match. Could have caused irreparable damage if rotator cuff. The match to VT wasn’t that important.
I think the VT medical staff knows what the problem is. If it is a rotator cuff, I doubt he is in the tournament at all.

Very good opening day. Iowa is likely too deep, but our guys are wrestling great in the main
giphy.gif

definitely a fun day of wrestling, and PSU did very well.

her @RoarLions1, @NoVa Lion, @HOCKEYGOD11 and the rest of you guys that go to Nations each year -- what's it like watching from your home, and being a part of the threads?
Jealous of all the elbow room the photographers have, with so few of them there. Luckily, though, I get to hang with the posters you tagged.

Compared to the first day of the BIG tournament, the results today are wonderful.

I agree, it's Iowa's to lose this year. But with a whole normal year under their belt and fix Joe Lee, next year could look much different.
15-3 on the day with plenty of bonus and a legitimate possibility that 6 make it to the semi's including a #12 and #15 seed. Excellent day.

I also realize Steveson could still win four thanks to the free year.

He can not win 5.
Freshman- Loss to Cassar
Sophomore- COVID - no tourney
Junior/Free - this year - first title?
Junior again - 2022 - 2nd?
Senior - 2023 - 3rd?

The only people who can win 5 are freshman or people who redshirted last year (Mekhi).

On a prior session thread, someone said Kerk would major J Wood. I didn’t reply “BS” but I thought that was BS. Thought Kerk would win, but not major. Kudos to that poster. Good call.

An observation: for being from Boyertown, Wood has a surprisingly small number of tattoos.
That was the chickenman - fuggedaboutit!

Kerk will likely lose to gable, but people dunking on him after Big 10s are in for a long 4 years
I don’t think people on this board were “dunking on Kerk“ they were calling out the Penn State fans that had Kerk in the same class as Gable and Paris after beating two MD tomato cans by fall. Joe Lee, on the other hand, is getting posterized by multiple people after his performance today.

Session 2 Stats:

Total Score
75-32

Takedowns
25-3

Reversals
2-0

2 NF
1-0

4 NF
1-0

RT
6-2

ST
3-0

Once again, Penn State was dominated in escapes
6-24

Just to note, do you know who has the most takedowns in one match so far? Yes, that would be Michael Beard with the ocho.
Thanks. Great breakdown.

I think the VT medical staff knows what the problem is. If it is a rotator cuff, I doubt he is in the tournament at all.

I thought I saw the VT coach indicating fo him to quit wrestling at one point. I thought it was Lewis who wanted to continue, not unlike Kyle Conel did when he got hurt during a match with us.

Tomorrow's match-ups:

125 Consolation R2: Robbie Howard vs. Fabian Gutierrez (UT-Chattanooga)
133 Quarters: RBY vs. Louie Hayes (UVA)
141 Quarters: Nick Lee vs. Zachary Sherman (UNC)
157 Quarters: Brady Berge vs. Jesse Dellavecchia (Rider)
174 Quarters: Carter Starocci vs. Andrew McNally (Kent St)
184 Quarters: Aaron Brooks vs. Taylor Venz (Nebraska)
197 Quarters: Michael Beard vs. Jake Woodley (Oklahoma)
285 Quarters: Kerk vs. Gable Steveson (Minnesota)

Going by seed, Kerk looks to face the biggest challenge. I don't underestimate anybody that makes the Quarters at Nationals, so all the PSUers have to bring their A game to their respective match.

I don’t think people on this board were “dunking on Kerk“ they were calling out the Penn State fans that had Kerk in the same class as Gable and Paris after beating two MD tomato cans by fall. Joe Lee, on the other hand, is getting posterized by multiple people after his performance today.
Not talking about this board. Opposing fans.

A healthy Kerkvliet is definitely a match for at least Parris. He just got back from an injury this year and was clearly laboring at Bigs. We’ll see next year

I realize that FS is not Folk, but, he did pretty well against against Wood at U23 trials. Won 6-5, 6-2.

I still think that a full gas, full weight Kerkvliet is a match for Cass at the very least.
