2021 NCAAs

Impressed with Howard & Beard. Howard lost a close one but looks like he is game to make a run in the consis. Beard looks like the human version of his prep hype and could be the 2021 version of 2011 Q or the 2012 version of Nico.

They don't call me Goggles for nothing. When I eye Starocci through mine, he looks small vs almost another opponent. Then again so did Markie. Maybe he has very tight dense muscle fibers but the thought of him moving down is interesting.

I don't want to be s basher, Joe works really hard, but seems to have zero mat sense. He works himself into bad positions and does not seem to be aware of both his and his opponents body position. Nolf had the gift of this perfect sense at birth. I don't know that Joe can be taught out of those deficiencies. He has been in the room for a year and a half.

Nick needed to tighten things up and was a little sloppy for sure his freshman year, but nowhere near to this extent, so I don't buy those comparisons.

Nice start by PSU in Day 1.

Please use this for all pre-session, in-session, and post-session discussions. If you're replying to another post, please use the Quote function.

When:
Thursday, March 19, 11 am EDT

Where:
St. Louis, MO

TV:
ESPNU

Video Stream:
EPSN3 -- they'll have coverage on all 8 mats. You can watch multiple mats simultaneously on your computer, or watch only 1 mat -- you decide.

Audio Stream:
Jeff Byers's radio PBP will be streamed. The pre-session portion start at 10:40 am EDT, and the wrestling coverage starts at 11 pm EDT. You can access the audio stream at:

PBP:
I'll provide coverage of as many PSU matches as I can (basically, all of them, unless two PSUers end up wrestling at the same time).

Note: As I posted in the 2021 Nationals Coverage thread earlier this week, I'll be out for Session 3B (Friday afternoon, at 3 pm). This is a heads up.

Team Scoring:
The best place, IMHO, to get updated team scoring is the Penn State Wrestling Club's web site. You can access the virtual team scoring at:

Mat Assignments:
I post upcoming PSU mat assignments as I learn of them. Others do as well; we try to help each other out during NCAAs. The best sources I have found for mat assignments in past Nationals were TrackWrestling (go to their dashboard) or the Twitter account of Penn State Wresting (@pennstateWREST).

Let's keep it going, PSU

PS - I salute Kirk. Here's to being a point generating machine. I just want him getting past the next match without injury, them rack some more up on the backside. We are so lucky to have him, and he is excellent to watch

Hot take:

When Spencer Lee graduates after next season, I think Robby Howard will be able to wrestle with anyone in the country at 125. Given his history and lack of time in the room this year, his performance, particularly in the last couple of weeks, has impressed me.

That kid is like a herding dog chasing a sheep. No quit.

PSU matchs in Sessions 3A and 3B.

Session 3A
125 Consolation R2: Robbie Howard vs. Fabian Gutierrez (UT-Chattanooga)
133 Quarters: RBY vs. Louie Hayes (UVA)
141 Quarters: Nick Lee vs. Zachary Sherman (UNC)
157 Quarters: Brady Berge vs. Jesse Dellavecchia (Rider)

Session 3B
174 Quarters: Carter Starocci vs. Andrew McNally (Kent St)
184 Quarters: Aaron Brooks vs. Taylor Venz (Nebraska)
197 Quarters: Michael Beard vs. Jake Woodley (Oklahoma)
285 Quarters: Kerk vs. Gable Steveson (Minnesota)

I don’t think people on this board were “dunking on Kerk“ they were calling out the Penn State fans that had Kerk in the same class as Gable and Paris after beating two MD tomato cans by fall. Joe Lee, on the other hand, is getting posterized by multiple people after his performance today.
give a him full a year of health, weight training, etc, and i'd be willing to say he's in the same class as gable & cass. antny 2 in the making.

I think so. Look at Paris' growth and transformation since Antny was tossing him around like a rag doll.

PS - to be fair and with due respect for the champ, I think Kerk has a superior tool set to work with compared to Antny. His ceiling is pretty high.

I agree with you. You can see the progress he has been making watching his matches with MH. Kid is going to be tough. Hopefully he makes a good run on the backside and ends up on the podium. He can do it.

Joe reminds me of Shak because he appears to have mental lapses in matches that cost him points he can't recover from. I was so impressed with the way he handled Hartman from Bucknell in freestyle this fall. Hartman is the 5th seed and in the quarter finals. Joe appears to have lost his confidence and it definitely is affecting his ability to wrestle. I'm hoping the coaches can help him get it figured out for next season.

Hey, I get a bonus point for one minute of riding time.
The oo
I'm an incurable optimist. In 2019 Steveson was being touted as the next guy to win four championships. He was even talking about it himself. Then he lost to Cassar. Maybe Gable has matured since then and has gained better focus. I can't help but look through my blue and white glasses.

I also realize Steveson could still win four thanks to the free year.
He can only win 3. He’s a junior. He’ll have this year, next year and the year after. He’s already used 2 years of eligibility.

He might only win 1. He has talked about this being his last year before he cashes in on MMA.

I think he had dreams of leaving school as one of the best ever. Cael like numbers. I think Anthony beating him the second time took that off the table, and with it might be some of the motivation to continue a full career in College. The Freestyle and MMA are both full of potential greatness for him. He 'could' win a Gold this go around. Multiple NCAA titles might just fade into the rear view mirror.

Jealous of all the elbow room the photographers have, with so few of them there. Luckily, though, I get to hang with the posters you tagged.
But you're the only of the group on here... Radio silence from the rest. They probably don't know how to post with their phones though. ;)

Im extremely happy for Berge, he seems like a really great kid and had a rough go of it last year. I don't think most people realize what its like coming back from a bad head injury. I got a TBI from in Iraq in 2004. I didnt have much damage below my shoulders, but took a chunk of a building to the head. I had to learn to walk again, my body just didnt move the way I wanted it to. I couldnt regulate emotions. I couldnt imagine trying to wrestle while recovering. I have a lot of respect for that young man and couldn't be happier for him. Hopefully he goes out in the morning and punches his AA ticket.

I vaguely remember that Cenzo and Basch asked Gable about that on a recent podcast. I can’t remember Gable’s answer. If I’m right that Gable gave a recent answer, we should probably refer to it and not to earlier quotes now.

Wow. That sounds difficult. I hope you are doing reasonably well now. May I ask if your Rhino name has anything to do with your service?

4000lb 2,000lb VBIED took out our FOB wall in AFG. I was enjoying a rare moment of peace and relaxation after a morning patrol and (oddly enough) filling and restacking sandbags with the boys around our platoon's compound. I had just settled in to read and conduct tanning ops when it knocked out of my chair from 300m away. Ended up calling for fire and directing one of our 240s while wearing flipflops, plate carrier, and ranger panties.

Occasionally I suffer from an inexplicable inability to form or recall words. The other day, it was "temperature". So, yeah, TBI isn't a joke, and I really hope that youth sports continue to improve in terms of preventing and diagnosing it.

Edit: Corrected to reflect the majority of news reports on the incident in question.

Gents: Excellent Day 1! I thought Beard would make a run...and he now has a pretty clean path to the semis and with the way he's wrestling could win it all (anything's possible at 97). That said, it's not much of a stretch to see 5 in the finals and Berge in the semis. Definitely looking like it will be a dogfight to the end. Good luck tomorrow! :)

A guy with Hawkeye in his name has more faith than some of you have had the last couple of weeks...

All love, NH.

I have my days but over all I have made close to 100% recovery. Im feeling it a little more the older I get. My first name is Ryan, my nickname has been Rhino since little league baseball. It was my radio call sign in the Marine Corps though. I started with "brown eye" but apparently that was inappropriate.
