2021 NCAAs

Gable is something else. Cassioppi is real good and he’s not even in the ballpark.
I don't know if Gable took a match off, if you can call it that, but he didn't seem to want anything to do with Kerk on their feet. He didn't show Cass the same respect.

A full size and healthy Kerk against Gable would be a fantastic match.

Those last two matches were a real downer. Kerkvliet has a ton of ability, but his folkstyle tactics aren't there yet. He has to learn you can't shoot straight on with these big guys and have all of that weight on you. We all knew his bottom wrestling was going to be lacking with his freestyle emphasis. The stall call and subsequent point for backing off the mat...inexcusable. A full year healing up and getting healthy, plus time in the room should fix his issues. Beard just looked gassed all day long. The stamina just doesn't seem to be there for a long tourney. Both kids scored us points though, which I'm grateful for and AA'd; Iowa didn't runaway with it today like some had thought.

On a separate note, I hope Brooks' ankle is OK. That's a heck of a thing to have the match in hand and then he tweaks the ankle in the last few seconds.
Considering Kerk was done for the year, what, 6 weeks ago? He’s gonna be fine.

Penn State guys will be slight underdogs in two of the finals (133 and 141).

A pretty big underdog in the 3rd (174).

And a slight favorite in the 4th (184).

Iowa will be super big favorites in 1 (125); a clear favorite in a second (174); and a slight favorite in a 3rd (141).

Be realistic; demand the impossible.

PSUers wrestling on Saturday:

133 Final: RBY vs. Daton Fix (Okla. St.)

141 Final: Nick Lee vs. Jaydin Eierman (Iowa)

174 Final: Carter Starocci vs. Michael Kemerer (Iowa)

184 Final: Aaron Brooks vs. Trent Hidlay (North Carolina St.)

197 7th Place Match: Michael Beard vs. Stephen Buchanan (Wyoming)

285 7th Place Match: Greg Kerkvliet vs. Tate Orndorff (Ohio State)

my thoughts as well

I have been asking the how did he get passed by for football for the past 2 years. Sure he is in a class by himself in wrestling, but.....

Then again, all linemen need to be 300 lbs+ these days and most are 6' 4". Even if he gained to 280 on that frame he would be undersized. Maybe a linebacker? He is a pretty amazing athlete, but who knows if he is a sub 5.0 40 guy.

It’s great that Steveson loves wrestling, but the way he moves makes me think he could be another Aaron Donald
Obviously he is a terrific athlete.......but I don't think he would like having his face hidden. :)

AB will tool on Hidlay

that’s why Aaron Donald comes to mind. He’s listed at 6’1”, 285. Gable is so quick and would be so good at using leverage he’d be a heck of an interior D-lineman

Why no names? Both Nick and Carter would have to win to have any chance. More likely all 4.

That aside, I am already really proud of the boys. There were projections that gave us less points than we already have. We aquited ourselves well, wrestling above seed. Not the same for Iowa. Had they not dodged those early bullets and had Berge stayed healthy, we would be neck and neck now with more finalists. Noone gave us that kind of chance.

Oh, did I forget to say we started as many freshman as they have seniors. Uh oh!

PSU in 2nd place in the team standing after two days of wrestling. They have four guys in the finals, and two guys in the Medal Round (Session 5) Saturday morning.

Please use this for all pre-session, in-session, and post-session discussions. If you're replying to another post, please use the Quote function.

When:
Saturday, March 20, 11 am EDT

Where:
St. Louis, MO

TV:
ESPN2

Video Stream:
EPSN3 -- they'll have coverage on all the mats (I'm not sure how many are being used in the session). You can watch multiple mats simultaneously on your computer, or watch only 1 mat -- you decide.

Audio Stream:
Jeff Byers's radio PBP will be streamed. The pre-session part of the show starts at 10:40 am EDT, with the wrestling coverage at 11:00 am EDT. You can access the audio stream at:

PBP:
I should be able to provide PBP for the two matches involving PSU wrestlers. However, I have something else to do at 1 pm, so if they take 2 hours or more to get to the 7th place matches, I could miss the PSU matches.

Also, just a reminder that by tradition, I don't do PBP during finals matches involving PSU wrestlers. I'll be in the finals thread Saturday evening; just not providing PBP.

Team Scoring:
The best place, IMHO, to get updated team scoring is the Penn State Wrestling Club's web site. You can access the virtual team scoring at:

Mat Assignments:
I post upcoming PSU mat assignments as I learn of them. Others do as well; we try to help each other out during NCAAs. The best sources I have found for mat assignments in past Nationals were TrackWrestling (go to their dashboard) or the Twitter account of Penn State Wresting (@pennstateWREST).

Let's keep it going, PSU

Didn't see Kerk's match, but sounds like there was a good bit of sloppiness.
Yeah, he was getting to the legs, just not finishing. If he doesn't miss time this year, I'd bet he finishes those off cleanly. Looked a little over powered and out of position, but kept fighting until the end.

We needed him to go to finals to have a shot at beating Iowa
BS. He's the 15 seed and he's in the 7th place match... Congrats to him!!! AND, we have 4 guys in the finals vs 3 for Iowa. If we win the two head-2-head matches it's going to be VERY close.

I know I’ll get ridiculed for saying this but I don’t care. I’m an AJ Ferarri fan. I’ll root for him against anyone but PSU.

A lot of people clowning him for his antics but this kid is a hammer on top, fast and when he shoots he goes hard.

Super impressed
I'll root for him if for no other reason than more mom screen time! In all seriousness, Ferarri is quite the talent and sure would have looked good in blue and white.

Iowa has a lot more hay to make in the morning session though. That would have to go almost perfectly for us to have a chance. Desanto & Cass especially are probably not done winning.

you should see his sister. ... wow. (Won’t post a picture but I’m sure people can look her up on IG)

I kinda can’t help but like him a bit.
