2021 Olympic Wrestling Match Thread and USA Wrestlers.

What a magical morning. Don't think I've ever been so nervously confident. So happy for the Magic Man!

He's brought so much joy to being a wrestling fan-- his (and Cael's) style has helped build a new generation of exciting wrestlers that we get the privilege of watching for decades to come!

USA USA USA

He did. Though Yazdani always showed alot of class, humility and respect to his competitors.
I just watched DT’s last takedown 57,000 times. Amazing how ‘easy’ it looked. Yaz was so flat-footed prob from the hard underhooks followed by the tough snap-down. In fact the earlier high-crotch takedown was fairly ‘easy’ too. I think it’s finding those small openings to get in on the shots that’s hard with Yaz. I will probably watch it 107,000 more times in the next cpl of days

17 wrestlers represent the USA, 2 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze. 1 in final, 2 in Repachage and 2 wrestlers yet to go.

That is a damn good showing!

3 and maybe 4 medals from the NLWC.
And we are not yet very good at GR, so if we just talk Freestyle, it’s 11 wrestlers and 6 medals so far (counting Stevenson’s), with 2 in repechage and 2 to go. That’s amazing.

Gilman has had good results in freestyle since he left college. Iowa gets some credit aswell as the HWC and the NLWC. It's ok to admit that. I'm proud of him! So close to the gold medal match
Point to my post where I said he didn't. I'd like to respond to you but have no idea what the hell you are meaning here. I'm giving Cael, his staff and the resources of the NLWC it's due props for helping Thomas succeed. If you want to do that for HWC, then go for it. I'm not going to do it for you...

So proud of Thomas Gilman coming back to win a bronze medal. He could have pulled off one of the biggest upsets at the Olympics. My heart sank for TG and then lifted back up seeing him celebrate a bronze medal win. The joy being shared as TG beemed from ear to ear. He's been openly loved by Penn State fans and to see him come back to win bronze only increased that love and respect for the warrior that Thomas Gilman is. So PROUD beyond words!!!

Don't get angry. I'm just saying Gilman has had great training/partners all around since he got to college. Glad to see him do well.

Folks said Taylor had an easy draw but the guys he beat finished 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 7th, so what do you have to say now!

Isn’t that stat something every Olympic champ can claim?

DT is getting his medal now. Looks like an astronaut coming back to earth from the heavens (and entering quarantine) in his white mask and warm up (or down) suit.

All other schools are at a huge disadvantage when recruiting against Cael. Now they see not only will his collegiate program help them reach their dreams but now they wont have to go anywhere else when it's time to fulfill those World and Olympic dreams. And they laughed all of us of their board (HR) several years back when we told them Cael was beginning to take on the second step of his plan and that was to not only have the best college program but to have the best club.

Hate for everyone else (not really) but it's now so easy to see why kids wrestle for less and PSU doesnt have to dish out big to full scholarships to its athletes.
The other thing is Carter and Aaron look like they got to spend a lot of time over there. You win a NCAA championship and then get that time. If you are world caliber and have those goals, why would you not go to Penn State.

Does anyone have the link to the David Taylor interview where he talks about his mom seeing the ad in the paper to sign him up for wrestling? He mentions in there he lost every match but 1 that first year in Wyoming but fell in love.
I coach youth sports for my boys and I want to send it to parents of my teams.

Thank you. I think I read on here that Dake got pulled back in? So if he gets Bronze and Snyder medals like he always does then 65 will be it.

Smh I forgot about the non olympic weights.

Anyone have video of the DT match?
NBC Sports app. Replays. Just go thru the session.

I can't imagine anyone working harder for anything than David Taylor working for that gold medal, so it was fitting that his singlet was ripped and eye bleeding in the end. Also fitting (not to mention memorable and satisfying) that he had to pull a blast double out of his hat with ten seconds left against a guy who doesn't give up blast doubles, and had wrestled Taylor perfectly to that point. It wasn't some crafty roll-through, it was a gut-check blast double that Yazdani had no answer to but had no excuse for not expecting.

NBC Olympics site is redirecting me to USA moments each time I try to watch the replay of the medal round. Seriously annoying.

"He wanted it more" is such a tired sports cliche ... but entirely applicable here. That last takedown was about competitiveness.

Also note that a lot of countries' wrestlers are Russian exports. Obviously the former Soviet satellites. But also the continent -- funny how many Greek, Italian, French, and Spanish names end in v but only in wrestling. We export some too (Micic, Habat, Amine, etc.) but nowhere near at that level.

You mean like current USA Olympic wrestler Ildar Hafizov? Previously represented Uzbekistan in the Olympics. No country is going to turn down a world class competitor, not even the USA. We probably have a few other imports in sports that we are not particularly strong at.

Am I the only one who was confused why Taylor was put on the clock? Maybe I am missing something as I am not "up" as much on the FS rules, but I thought Taylor took the only legitimate shots/ attacks in the 1st period.
Common confusion. Passivity in freestyle has very little to do with committed attacks. It's about who is controlling center, coming forward, and maintaining contact. Yazdani controlled the center and DT was breaking contact to clear/stay out of the underhook. It was the right call.

I thought Yazdani wrestled a near perfect match and a very different one than I was expecting. Controlled the action and totally avoided extended flurries that gassed him previous matches. I don't think that was the kind of match DT wanted to wrestle. But in the end, DT had too much fire power! Scared my dog yelling when he got to that double to win it lol. That whole sequence was so pretty, from the set up to his footwork.

First, congrats to Olympic champion David Taylor! Absolutely loved him walking around the mat with the Stars and Stripes draped over his shoulders, the torn singlet and the trickle of blood from his left eye. What an image.
Second, somewhere Ant Knee was loving that winning blast f-ing double!
