Nice job bullpen. Up 4-0, walk three guys, and give them a run on a wild pitch. Can they blow a 4-1 lead in the ninth?? They certainly haven't given anyone a reason to be confident.

Sometimes you give credit to the other team for exceptional hitting...but consistently issuing walks doesn't even make them earn it...it instead unnecessarily sabotages the Phillies' own success; somewhat difficult to believe at the major league level...

There are maybe, MAYBE four pitchers on this whole staff who belong in a major league uniform.

Girardi keeping Alvarado in to give up a bomb to me raises questions. Is he actively trying to lose. This staff is an atrocity. They may not lose 100 but they'll be missing a hell of a chance.

Gotta give Vinnie his props, 7 scoreless, 7 k's and no walks. Game is far from over, only 2-0 Phils.
Vince was outstanding. When they pulled him I was praying for about 16 more runs. It's a minor miracle they won this game. Three hits. Of course Brogdon and Alvarado combine for three walks and a WP, not to mention the bomb ALvarado gave up. No lead is ever safe. No lead. Last night was proof. Nobody hits. Woo hoo. Here comes the bullpen in a 1-0 game....stand by. Go Phillies.

you want to bitch at some body, bitch at the gm. everybody knew the biggest problem last year was the bullpen. so what is his solution? bring in a bunch of rag arms who wouldn't even be in the majors with any other team. this owner is supposed to have $$$. then spend some of it to get a decent closer.

They thought they solved the bullpen. That's the scary thing. It's beyond worse than it ever was.

Coon, Archie, and Alvarado were going to be the answer.

"Baseball people" will tell you everybody wants a closer like everybody wants a 7' center in basketball. Easier said than done. But this is beyond bad. too many teams, watered-down rosters.

When was the last time somebody bolted the clubhouse door, called a players-only meeting and tore ass? 1993? Dutch? There is zero leadership on the club or in the FO.

I listen to Scott and LA a lot when we play at home. LA is beyond frustrated with the inability of MLB pitchers to throw strikes. He said last night that throughout the league there are tons of pitchers who have no idea where the ball is going when they throw it. Control doesn't seem to matter. Just throw it as hard as you can.

LA thinks (knows) that a 90 mph fastball on the outside part of the plate at the knees is more effective than a 101 mph fastball right down the middle.

He's often said the mantra among hitters is to "swing as hard as you can in case you hit it". The analog for pitchers (especially closers) seems to be "throw it as hard as you can in case its a strike".

The conventional wisdom in the NBA is that it is a league of 50 quality guards, 50 quality forwards and six quality centers.

The analog in MLB could be that it is a league of 100 quality starters, 25 quality late inning relievers, and 10 closers. I don't think any of our guys falls into the latter two categories.

Agree that Starting Pitcher complete games (or walk-offs in SPITE of blown saves) seem to be the only way for the Phillies to win...but if NOBODY in the bullpen is capable of getting outs than there isn't much Girardi can do...seriously has a single pitcher in the bullpen been reliable?...and how many relief outings, however short, are not characterized by at least one (and typically more than one) walk?...and MLB pitchers are theoretically the best in the world LOL. At least make the other team EARN it for a change by making them gets multiple hits instead of making it easy for them via walks.

Tell me please, why wasn't that a home run?. It looked like it cleared the center field fence?

It hit the top of the padding about half way up the wall. McCarthy called it wrong. Miller wasn't sure so he touched them all. Can't blame him.

On record now that Girardi sucks. Emotionless tron. Maybe next PSU HC in football.

This crew could be running away with the div, bad as they are. Derelict. Twenty five something blown saves.

Wise old man once told me: Every move you make to the bullpen is another chance to shit the game away.

Thanks for the explanation. Did look like a HR when I saw it on MLB channel.

Approaching some records, and not good ones.

Phillies fans trust nobody other than Wheeler. They do not trust the Phillies bullpen. It blew its eighth save in nine games in the ninth inning when left-handers José Alvarado and Ranger Suárez combined to allow three runs. It was the Phillies’ 22nd blown save this season.

The franchise record is 25 in 2004.

The Rockies hold the MLB record with 34 in 2004.

It's crazy how times have changed. Girardi talked about Wheeler not getting worn out with too many innings pitched with half a season to go. Makes me wonder how Carlton used to throw 300 innings a year and was dominant for most of his career.

Go look at Robin Roberts' numbers. Complete games in the 20's and 30's eight years running.

Ron Reed used to give you two or three inning saves. Also Tug. Now let's say Ranger or Archie pitch two innings they need a week off. Ridiculous.

I will be going to the game tomorrow. Light a candle.

Whose turn is it? I don't even know. I guess Effin Eflin.

When Robin Roberts used to do color on some games, he talked about what it was like to pitch in the 1950's and 1960's. For reference, in the mid-1950's, Robbie had six straight seasons of over 300 IP and over 30 CG. He finished with 286 wins.

At any rate, Robbie said he'd pitch a complete game on day 1; have a day off on day 2 and pitch a couple innings in relief on day 3 and start again on day 5 (and most likely throw a CG). He had a 19 year career with over 300 CG. Even in the 1960's when he lost a lot of the juice on his fastball, he was an effective pitcher for several more years because he knew how to pitch.

Lefty was always around 300 IP. He had over 250 CG and 329 wins.

These guys were great athletes who also really took care of their bodies. Plus they knew how to pitch.

So many of today's pitchers just want to throw 100 mph regardless of where the ball goes.

A friend of mine said at the game yesterday something I never really thought about...if Roberts and these rubber-armed guys of yore were making $22m a year they wouldn't have been allowed to go all those innings and CGs. Even if you adjust for inflation.

I never really thought about it but I think he's right. The big money killed the game for a lot of guys.

Kind of backwards, here's more money and we demand you do less.

Based on what I just saw with Bohn sliding into 2nd base, maybe MLB needs to adjust things with replay. Jason made a good slid into 2nd but over slide by a bit, but it was very close. That would never been called prior to replay. Solutions? I DO NOT like seeing players called out because they were ASSERTIVE!! In the law of physics, how can an athlete, running at warp speed, slide into a cement like base, and be expected to anchor his foot on the base? It's Insane!!!

I didn't see the play but I don't understand the complaint. If a guy over slides and is tagged, he's out. Sounds like Bohm needs to work on his baserunning.

Can not argue, but it was very close. Sure, some of my comments were out of frustration based on Wheeler pitching and falling behind early to a bad Cubs team.

Well, this was encouraging.

Phillies finish a series win (3 games out of 4) vs Cubs with an 8-0 win. Brad Miller with 3 HRs!

More regulars back in the lineup, contributions from many sources, and an impressive 39 runs scored in 4 games. Not all problems have been solved, but scoring more runs is very helpful.

Bamboo Brad back in the lineup tonight in Bean Town?
