5 Most Anticipated Matchups at Big10’s

I’ve only watched Hilde maybe a half dozen times since he came over to Penn State. Seems to me he’s really tall and athletic for 125, good on top and always seems to be in control in matches. I’m curious for those that follow other teams more closely how has his wrestling improved or changed if it all from his days at Western Michigan?
He's essentially the same as he was at Cental Michigan. Perhaps some refinements, but what we're seeing is who he has been.

I mean he isn't going to let thing fly offensively. These matches are all 2-1, 3-2, 4-3 type matches. When you wrestle that close in big matches anything can happen and happen quick as time expires.
This sounds like wishful thinking rather than coherent thought.

In no small part because he majored a returning 3rd placer just a month ago. Put up 14 pts. Though maybe that wasn't a big match.

I can see it either way but my experience is the bigger the match for Suriano the more conservative he is. I've never seen him light it up against a really good opponent. Not to say that makes him any less a great wrestler I think most wrestlers do that unless they wrestled for Penn state the last ten years lol. I miss the chenzo attitude of I don't give a shit I'm throwing your ass like it or not here I come. Bam

There are very few guys who easily beat other top guys (we are a bit spoiled), so scores are typically close. Carter is close in a lot of tough matches, but finds a way to win. Does anyone really expect Aaron to blowout Amine? Check out bonus percentages. Could it be that NS doesn’t dial it back, but the competition is pretty darn good? Can’t find something offensively that isn’t there.

That post season he won, Suriano beat Desanto 6-3, Lizak by fall and 9-2, Pletcher 4-1, Micic 4-1, and Fix 4-2 in SV, but it is Fix, not exactly a slouch.

None of those seem like cliff-hangers except Fix, and I wouldn’t expect otherwise against that level of competition. Everyone can’t be Spencer, and even he lost to Piccininni and Rivera, and beat Mueller 5-0 to win a title and Suriano 5-1. Didn’t even bonus Courtney for the 3rd title. :)

1. Starocci vs Nijenhuis. Morbid curiosity.
2. Starocci vs Kemerer
3. Brooks vs Amine
4. Edsell, all rounds.
5a. Berge vs Young
5b. BB, all rounds.

Please name the top five that he's not a clear cut favorite over.
Agreed. Nick is still the favorite over everyone. I think both Vito and Glory have a decent chance at dethroning him. I think he is vulnerable back down at 125 but only to those two realistically. Top 5? No way.

Well he only beat Hilde by one, Glory will have a definite shot and I feel like Vito is a really bad matchup for him and Courtney has a puncher's chance. I just feel like in big matches against top guys he wrestles not to lose.

That makes Suriano a clear cut favorite against the entire field except Glory and Arujau.

Hildebrandt is the guy with a puncher's chance -- because he and Suriano are both defensively exceptional on feet. But Suriano won their match on riding time -- which means he's better at Drew's game than Drew is.

Courtney lost to Glory 12-6 -- which was 11-2 before a pair of garbage time takedowns. The only way he beats Suriano is if Cruiseliner Nick is injured.

I think saying the close match with Drew shows that Nick is vulnerable is wishful thinking. I am not a huge fan of what I know of Nick’s personality or his wrestling style, but when exactly in the match did Drew threaten to score? That is Nick’s M.O., even during his time at Penn State. The scoreboard might look close, but only a very select few are an actual threat to score on him.

If I were a betting man I would take Nick against the field, Although I have been known to be wrong on multiple occasions, just ask my wife.

I love a punchers chance and I'm betting Cael prepared him. Let's say he does win it all at bigs what does that do for his seeding at NCAA s

That returning 3rd placer is 2-5 in his last 7 matches, giving up at least 8 points in all five losses.
Then we can pick Heinselman's only bonus loss of the year instead. Regardless, "Suriano turtles up and wrestles 2-1/3-2 matches" is narrative, not fact. It also dismisses the opponents.

Does anybody think RBY turtles up against good wrestlers? Yet Suriano's scores against common opponents like Fix and DeSanto are similar.

I’d say he does what the majority of wrestlers do when facing a wrestler where a mistake can mean an L.

Really hard to tell before EIWA results. So many variables, and I don't know how they fit into the NCAA seeding criteria.

Guessing he's around 5-6 if he finishes 2nd at B10s to Suriano. Opposite Courtney in the quarters is ideal.

If Hildebrandt + Glory win out: Top 3 behind Glory and maybe Courtney (who has a lot more matches but less top wins).

If Hildebrandt and Arujau win their conferences, chaos ensues. Probably still 2nd behind Arujau, who would have beaten more good opponents (and to the extent this matters for seeding, has a 90% bonus rate).

BTW, EIWA champ Glory is probably the 1 seed ahead of B10 champ Suriano. More matches, beat Arujau 2x, beat Courtney.

I didn't realize he beat arujau twice that's impressive. I would put money on glory if I was a betting man. I get there are more upsets in the 125 weight class each year wonder if they track that stat which weight class has the most upsets on average.

I think he’s only beaten him once, but presumably would do it again in the EIWA finals if we’re assuming he won the tourney. It’s interesting, though, would he get the 1 if Vito is hurt or upset early and he doesn’t beat him again?

if Suriano beats Hildebrandt in the B1G finals, Hilde should be fifth. I don’t see anyone besides the big 3 and Courtney ahead of him.

I’m much more interested in Ayala vs Hilde than Suriano v Hilde. Mostly because I’m not interested in any Suriano matches. I think that could be an interesting style matchup and big for the team race if it happens.

the rest of my top 5:
Eierman v Seabass
Starocci v Kem
Gomez v Lovett

and my #1 match, as it’s been since preseason - Brooks v Amine.

That's how I'd seed Hildebrandt absent the seeding scoring system. Cardinale could conceivably get the 5 ahead of him by winning B12s -- currently 8th in the coaches poll with 4 B10 guys ahead of him.

And if that gives Hildebrandt the better draw, I'm all for it.

I agree the first match was the best I've watched all year. Two excellent wrestlers going at it. I think AB is better but amines defense is sick

This thread is about the wrestlers, but the fans here have been great; Nebraska, Iowa and Wisconsin mostly as far as ones we have met…and a bunch of all three. To the person they’ve been terrific. Very complimentary of Cael & the program. We’ve had all-in-good-fun fan banter everywhere we went. Looking forward to tomorrow.

I’ll do non-PSU matches to eliminate the obvious.

1. SeaBass vs Eierman
2. Hamiti vs Marinelli II
3. Gomez vs Lovett II
4. Barnett vs Ayala
5. Amine vs Romero II

Man, Brooks and Amine keeps living up to the potential. Such high level wrestling. Can’t wait to see it again.
