Easy for you to say as it does not impact your future - what if the schools he is interested in (and applying to) have made their offers contingent upon him enrolling in January???

The problem is that athletes can only participate in team activities if they enrolled at the school. When an athlete has to make their move varies significantly based on school calendars . No, it's not about education, even when kids leave high school in December and enroll for the spring semester. They do it so they can start participating in team activities and getting the benefits and preparation the program has to offer. It's a bigger deal for transfers because the sooner they can start with the new team the better chance they have of accomplishing the sports goals that drove their decision. It is what it is until the rules change and athletes are no longer required to be enrolled students.
