Controversy??? The dude locked his hands!! End of story!! And yes, there was 1 second on clock.

i was screaming for stalling throughout - Wilps did next to nothing

Thank God Matt didn't get hosed. Coaches were on the ball, refs took their time (ahem, no bogus Big 10 football ref shenanigans like "replay feed wasn't working), and the right calls were made. Hell, Wilps was on the leg for a full 7 seconds the first time and that wasn't called.

I need to go back but wasn't there an earlier challenge that probably wasn't smart to take on a near TD because it gave Wilps a breather? Wilps looked like he was ready to die late in the 2nd.

Lots of haters on TheMat (cue Dumpster Fire photo) - some of those Lehigh fans are beyond bitter.

Dake looked extremely unexcited to welcome Stieber into the 4x club.

Anyone else sick of seeing Dake and hearing about OSU? BTW......Oliver had a takedown, Stieber is a 3 timer IMO.

It would only be controversial if the refs had done something contrary to the rules. In which case we could have been "Miller'd" Ian Miller can tell you what controversy is.

For the record:

Wilps did not get called for fleeing when he twice purposely avoided a TD by putting limb on the out of bounds, black area off the mat. That is 2 points not recorded.

Wilps did not get a 5 second stalling call the FIRST time starting at 19 seconds, down to 12 seconds. 7 seconds of leg ride not swiped. Once might say those calls would have resulted in an outright win for Brown and they ARE the rules.

And lastly……it is nothing more than poetic justice for fans of wrestling to watch a wrestler fail to engage for 6:30 seconds and suddenly decide it's time to wrestle and then lose. Wilps, for all his talent….did not leave all of his talent on the match. Join the list of wrestlers who don't achieve everything they want because they did not leave it all there. Heflin, Evans, Wilps, Villalonga, Telford. I prefer that list over those who stall their way to titles.

Very happy for Brown. Great guy who makes us Penn State Proud.

Regarding the comment "what goes around comes around..."

Will someone recap what happened in a previous M Brown NCAA match that sparked that comment.

Thanks in advance...

+1 Cael popped out of chair in a millisecond.... motioned for locked hands and grabbed the green flag emphatically
after it happened. That started a sequence of events that then showed Wilps locking hands. It's a basic RULE 101
in wrestling. Ever elementary wrestler knows that and a collegiate wrestler will automatically when they bring an
opponent back down to the mat, will instantly let go of the locked grip. In this situation, Wilps was trying to save his
last match on the biggest stage and he LOCKED hands. It was a desperate move in a situation where he had to
think Matt Brown could get out. He tried to prevent that with LOCKED hands.

End of controversy. Matt Brown is beyond a Penn State fans wildest dreams... a deserved National Champ.
When Penn State didn't win the title this year, but Matt Brown won a NC... It felt like the 4 titles wrapped into one.
I had goose bumps as he strode off the stage to be interviewed. Surreal feeling. So happy for him and what
he has accomplished at Penn State. One of the all time greatest kids... gets to know that feeling. We all share
it with him. Great end to a phenomenal career.

Many, including Matt Brown. Perry was the poster boy for stalling until Mike Evans picked up the flag. When Perry was finally dinged for stalling a whole season later in the finals vs Howe…..very shortly after he exploded for one of the all time great TD's and put on a great display of wrestling the rest of the way to win the NC.

It is unfortunate that those who stall as a strategy for winning also rob the wrestling world of see their real talent.

Don't forget when Ramos had him cradled and no back points were called.

Well said amalone... Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Well Done Matt Brown

Thank you for laying it out.

Controversy might be the wrong word to use. No doubt, the way

things went, it certainly took away from Matt's legit win, as he himself admitted. The poor guy didn't even get a chance to celebrate properly.

Re: There's no controversy if the refs get it right the first time***

No doubt, on Mat's first escape attempt following the restart after Wilps TD (there was 20-something seconds remaining), Wilps went right to the lower leg and they did not start the count for at least 5 seconds! Wilps should have been called for stalling twice (2 points as Wilps had a SW going into 3rd) at the end of the match on top of the "locked hands" technical violation (which is a point as well). Honestly, they could have called Wilps for stalling in the 1st Period as he "fled the mat" multiple times to avoid being taken down after Brown had shot, had a leg and Wilps intentionally fled the mat rather then wrestle.
