When the announcer at the stadium asks the crowd to stand and sing along with the Blue Band during the alma mater, do you want non-alum to sing?
Does it bother you that non-alum sing?
Do you want every Pennsylvania State University fan to sing?

Just curious.

Not sure why it would bother an alum if a guest from another school sang along with the alma mater. I have to say, however, that I got a laugh out of the scoreboard operator last Saturday. He or she was WAY behind developments on the field. He or she tried to post the words to the alma mater on the scoreboard, but was so far behind that the alma mater was over before the scoreboard got halfway through the words, they just gave up at that point. The same thing happened when they introduced the PSU wrestling team.

I'm an alum and I don't sing. It has nothing to do with a lack of respect but rather it's because I'm self conscious about my horrible singing voice. If anyone else wants to sing, alum or not, I say go for it.

I never thought about it. I have a lousy voice and don't sing. I support anyone who wants to do so - alum or non-alum. I love a good singing voice. Once at a game there was a woman who sang the national anthem like a professional - she probably was one. She was so good that some of us turned around and gave her an ovation.

That's so 80s:)
Do the students still do that?
No, they don't. They know the words and sing. We were a bunch of apathetic ne'er do wells. I can remember some people really belting out that line over and over again.

My wife is an alum"82". I am not. When it's time to sing the school song I put my arm around her shoulder while she sings. This Saturday a young man sat beside her " a 16 alum" and he asked her if he could put his arm around her shoulder while they proudly sang their school song.

I sing because I know the words as my eyes well up with pride and because I know that it will soon be time to leave Beaver Stadium, The house that Joe built.

I was once asked not to sing by an alum

I want every opposing coach to sin stand and sing it after each game....with Delaney by their side on his knees doing the same... Along with 20 hail Mary's and a weeks worth of acts of contrition. Smug prick that he is.....

Nobody can use that excuse anymore since we have million $$$ electronic Jumbotrons which have the words for all to see.

I remember back in the late 70's when ABC was broadcasting a home game. They cut to their sideline reporter - it may have been Jim Lampley - during pre-game who was standing directly in front of the student section just as the alma mater started playing. All you could hear, plain as day, was "We don't know the goddamn words" being sung by thousands of drunk college kids. I couldn't help but laugh my ass off. Thinking back now I should've been embarrassed but, like Joe used to say, youth is a disease which can be cured.

The stadium announcer requests alumni and fans to join in the alma mater. My favorite part of the game along w/National Anthem

Seriously, the scoreboard operators that control the lyrics for the alma mater & National Anthem have not gotten the correct timing with the band since 2012. It really pisses me off every game. My wife & I sing both….we know the words. If the dopes got the timing correctly, there would be a symphony of voice from the crowd. $10 million for the scoreboard that is operated incorrectly?

You'll be happy to know that "tradition" continued well into the 90's. We didn't know the GD words either. Although towards the end of my student days some underclassmen in the student section started giving us weird looks and pointed out that the words were on the video screens. Damn kids.

I am an alum and have a terrible singing voice but sing the alma mater loudly. My wife is not an alum, but a huge fan, has a very good singing voice and sings the alma mater loudly as well.

In all sincerity, it drives me bonkers when the kids sing the "May no act" verse louder than the others. None of them did anything wrong yet they embrace this. When we stood at childhood's gate is no less worthy than may no act. I guess it's the new tradition. It only exacerbates the scandal to the world. Do they get this in the freshman packet or something?

I don't know the god damn words ...so I can't tell what anyone is singing.

LOL. I don’t sing those words during the alma mater but have to confess that 35 years later those words still ring between my ears every time I hear that tune

I always had heard the "We don't know the GD words" was from when they changed the words to make them less gender specific in the 70s. They changed the words, thus the students literally did not know the words.

And the previously mentioned "did not have a huge ass scoreboard to put the words up so each word is the size of a small SUV" added to, well not knowing the words.

The alum got very upset about the students singing the GD words. One game the cheerleaders and drill team handed out sheets with the words one game. At the appropriate time, every one stood up and sang loudly "Now we know the GD words!"

They weren't happy......

Doesn't bother me one bit. A lot huge fans of the university and team didn't go to school there for one reason or another.

Do the students still do that?

“When stood at boyhood’s gate,
Shapeless in the hands of fate,
Though didst mold is Dear Old State,
Into men, Into men!

I wonder why the male references were removed but the female references, Alma Mater and “rest oh Mother Dear with thee” were left in.

The third verse has always been played at a lower volume wth the crescendo for the fourth verse. That said, I get your point.

If a non-alum sang it would be inappropriate, but it would not bother me.
If I saw some gawdam hypocrite like Peetz, or Joyner, or Suhey, singing, that would bother me.
