Techs Hidlay - does he get a sniff at PSU? Now a 2-time Fargo freestyle champ, still 17, and grew up in and still wrestles for a MD public school program with practically zero history even in the state of MD. Upper middle weights are stacked, but Brooks' potential is pretty awesome

PSU did sniff around earlier, but highly improbable now. Very set at his likely weights, plus hard to imagine Cael going after more than 6 potential AA types in one recruiting class.

Using Flo Rankings:

182:
#1 Travis Wittlake - PSU verbal
#5 Aaron Brooks

195:
#1 Michael Bear - PSU verbal

He's a nice wrestler, but where would he fit on the roster? If he could cut to 174 in college, he'd be looking at Mark Hall at 174 for his 1st two years in college.

And Wittlake has beaten him multiple times. Pretty good matches but brooks has never won. He is a fantastic athlete with a very high ceiling though. He is going to be a beast in college I believe. He just threw Hidlay around. 3 4 pointers and all of them beautiful. Great match

... and The Anvil for at least another year after that, probably longer with a likely Greco Olympic shirt.

Wittlake anticipated to be at 84, no? Brooks wrestled 170 at Fargo so 74 is a possibility. Could slot in between Joe Lee and Wittlake but Manville has loads of potential eligibility so it would be tight even if Brooks could make 74. I didn't consider all of the money thats likely tied up in his class already. Brooks does seem to fly under the radar though

Brooks Hidlay was a fun match, worth tracking down. Both guys willing to go upper body. Surprised Hidlay didn't change things up because Brooks was winning all those battles. Don't see Brooks a fit at PSU due to the logjam but he'll be fun to watch.

Really? I thought that I heard here that Hidlay was better than Wittlake???;)

I'm interested in this kid, too! My brother's decent pals with his pops.

And regarding Hagerstown's North High...in the 80s, I wrestled for Waynesboro, then in the Blue Mountain League, now in the Mid Penn, but in both cases, a fairly middling program in PA District 3, which is a fairly middling district in PA States. It's right on the Mason Dixon line, tho, so occasionally we would have duals or tourneys against North & South High, Boonsboro, Smithsburg, and oh man, did we maul them. Wrestlers who were .500 or less (two thumbs pointed at chest) would crush!

That Brooks has accomplished nationally what he has, from that little wrestling hole, is really fascinating. I mean, I get that they're doing plenty of traveling to get good comps, but 'National Champion from North High' remains a massive anomaly.

I'll be super curious to see where he ends up for college. I really can't wait to watch him at D1 Nationals.

What he said the kid is just a lot of fun to watch will be pulling for him unless he ends up at Ohio State. Same goes for David Carr. Any word in where Carr is looking?

Waynesboro did produce Kurt Bowman in the mid 80's. State championship in 85 at 155, runner-up in 84 at 145 (lost to Sean Finkbeiner) and runner-up in 83 at 138 (lost to Sean Smith of Dover).

Ohio board says: Tanners, Cornell, Iowa State, VT.

With His dad and Kevin Dresser in the mix Iowa State could be a front runner. I hope so. Do not want him as a perennial threat for Ohio. As he fills out he looks a little too much like an Ed Ruth.

Wait, wait, wait, wait WAIT! There's a person on this board familiar with Waynesboro's only PA State Champion? Are you he? Or another Bowman family member?

Not a member of the Bowman family or Kurt. I actually wrestled in the same Christmas tournament in 1983 for another District 3 team, same weight class. He of course won it, I placed third, we did not wrestle each other. Bowman was very explosive.

Proud former Waynesboro Heavyweight here - class of '02. Coach Bowman, Kurt's brother Grayson, was my middle school coach.

Crazy that North High has such an elite wrestler. Williamsport was solid when I was coming through but they were the only decent Maryland squad in striking distance.

Hello PSU faithful! We are big Lions fans! Aaron will be at the Olympic Training Center the year following high school. He will then enter college. We really don't have a college list. Several have reached out over the past year, but we have only visited PSU and Maryland. We plan on adding a few more in the fall.

Best of luck and he is amazing talent, no matter where his path takes him.

Hey, hey, lookie there! Welcome to the board, John. I'm Jason Pearson's oldest brother. I'm not certain, but we may have balled together at the Y a long time ago. Thanks for dropping us this note! Best of luck going forward; it must be incredibly exciting.

Thanks guys! We will be up in the fall for a visit and football game again. I'll tell you, these kids are still growing. You really don't know who your going to have at what weight. Some kids grow in college and that changes the teams needs. That's why we are just visiting schools and taking our time. Aaron just turned 17 last month. I think hes got at least 2 more inches and 20-30 more pounds before college.

Hey man! I've got you by about 10 years (Class of '89), but I went through the same path. Grayson & Darrell were both my coaches in Middle School and Elementary School. Awesome, awesome family!

Awesome! Yeah, growing up as the youngest in that family, he was destined to be tough. Although, if memory serves (and it very well not ;), I think they tried bringing him up to the HS Varsity when he was in 8th or 9th grade. The high school was 10th through 12th then, with two Junior Highs. It was a home match, he lost, and afterwards he jetted into the stands for a big cry with his parents. My normally respectful grandfather teased us for a year about that: 'don't you go out there like Kurt Bowman' and such sh*t. Kurt of course shut him up in 10th grade, making it to the finals.

I remember both those Seans who beat him. Did you ever wrestle either of them?

My junior year I was on JV at 145 behind an eventual state place winner. Our 138 pounder was injured who would go on to be a state qualifier, my coach asked me to move down to 138 to wrestle Shaun Smith and Gene Gobrecht in our next two matches. Smith won the 83 AAA state championship at 138, Gobrecht of South Western was the 83 state runner up at 138 (talk about a week). I declined the opportunity, largely due to the coaches plan was to have me then drop to 132. I was wrestling JV 145 at a little under my walking around weight after wrestling varsity at 119 the previous year. I decided to focus on academics my junior year since my grades always nose dived when I cut a lot of weight (got into PSU, so that worked out).

Senior year I was waiting in the center of the mat for Brad Lloyd to come out (Lloyd lost to Bowman in sectionals and districts, placed 3rd at States and was NCAA runner-up at Lock Haven). I think Lloyd might have been afraid of me, he bumped up to wrestle our returning state placer. At the time I was so relieved, their JV guy immediately took me down. Now I would have liked to actually have wrestled him just to say I did.

Ah, the old YCIAA in the early 80's, aka Dallatown's playground.

In the early 80's it was a Dover/Dallastown playground. Dover had a long winning streak and was loaded with state place winners/qualifiers in 83 and 84 time frame. Throw-in Southwestern and Susquehannock on the AA side, tough league for a few years.

No doubt during the Bence years, Dallastown was the dominate program in the county.

Ha!! Caught my eye...Southwestern graduate here. Way before the best wrestler ever seen in those parts (Joey Wildasin).

IIRC Shaun Smith beat Rob Koll [9-8 or something like that] in the 1st Rd on his way to that '83 title?
I think 1st rd losers were done back then?

Remember Joey well, little brother tangled with him in sectional finals, wasn't pretty, alltime record for blood time (back in the days when blood time was unlimited). I went to Susquehannock, early 80's was a good period for wrestling in York County.

1st round losers were definitely done at that time. Interestingly Smith wrestled the post season with a torn ACL and his father passed away very late in the season.
