African-American athletes threaten to strike at Mizzou

Should be interesting. I do like students getting involved and speaking up.

Reading the alleged incidents on campus, it seems like an over reaction to the random dip wad on campus that seems to be instigating these incidents. However, the news paper may be over simplifying things and I'll watch and see how this all plays out!

Sounds like a culture problem with football players wanting to dictate who the university president is. Hey, I get the fact they have concerns but there are better ways to affect change. In this case I doubt the tail will wag the dog.

Well.... the President can't be fired in under a week. My bet is the President is still there & they all play the next game. Much Ado About Nothing as far as a strike. Now do they have a point..........

I think it is an interesting story that is already drawing a fair amount of attention nationally. Looks like there is going to be more news on this before the end of the day.

Thinking ahead a bit....I will note that BYU is already bowl eligible. I wonder......

Not sure why the university president is responsible for some idiot doing things on campus. It's not like the president did it. Also, I'm pretty sure if Mizzou was having a good season this wouldn't happen but at 4-6 and 6th in the SEC east (compared to winning the SEC east the past 2 years) the frustration boils over.

The Mizzou coaches calling for the firing of the university president is a fine line crossed. The prez is their ultimate boss (well at least in theory as they are in the SEC. ;) ).

Does the university president deserve to be fired for his actions or inaction? If so, then fire him, but the problem is that university has done nothing and now the OUTRAGE. has taken hold and it would be forever seen that the president was fired because the student-athletes forced the issue. That is a bad precedent.

The president made a really bonehead statement when he met with a student group. Basically told them any "oppression" was all in their heads.
Not exactly confidence-inspiring.

People were pretty upset when Tommie Smith and Juan Carlos made a statement in the 1968 Olympics, too. But now there's a statue of them on the San Jose State campus.

These athletes may have to suffer some consequences for their actions, but let's not pretend that playing a stupid football game is more important that speaking up for the right of all Americans to be treated equally.

Have you read their list of demands?

Latest that I heard is that the entire team will not practice again until the issue is resolved....at least that is what has been stated as of now.

So, there is that.

The story seems to be moving ahead fairly rapidly. I am going to try to keep up with the story.

Let them strike. Take away their scholarships. If they don't like it let them go to another school

If this happened at Penn State, would you like it if black athletes said they were not being treated fairly, then told other black athletes to stay away from Penn State? Go ahead, answer that question, because most of our best players are black.
Somebody should listen to what these kids are saying, because it is important to them as human beings and equals, at Missouri. They are making a stand for fellow students.

Pinkel could very well do that - and proceed to have his recruiting become tremendously more difficult, if not impossible.

In a way, the things going on at Missouri remind me of the types of things that happened at PSU in the early 2000s. Someone who was a student then - did PSU football players get involved at the time? My recollection was that some players did get involved, although not as intensively as we are seeing at Mizzou.

So the Missouri president has just issued a statement basically acknowledging that the minority students have legitimate beefs.
It shouldn't have taken a football strike to get him to take the issue seriously.
The fact that it did take a football strike proves that the football players were right to strike.

No one is pretending 'stupid football' is more important than anything. (For once just wish there could be conversations on topics without the the drama responses and insinuating thigs that were never said).

Because as long as you're getting a football scholarship you should be willing to put up with being called a n****r and having a swastika painted on your dorm.

Seriously.

Do you people even hear yourselves?

He's probably one of those types that pretends like racism doesn't exist.

How can any change be affected when the powers that be won't listen? This is not the first option, it is the ultimate option for kids who tried doing things another way.

Do you know the issues? How can you say that without even knowing whether they have a legitimate complaint?

The issues are all available out there, including this movement's list of demands. It sure doesn't seem very substantial to me. And does your point not apply to everyone who is automatically assuming that the players and this larger movement are completely righteous in their protests?
