Alternative to playing Pitt every year... but still paying homage

to our eastern football past. There are 3 northern teams in the ACC/B12 that PSU played every year for a long time (Pitt, WVU, Syracuse). There are three eastern teams in the Big Ten that were also on the eastern football circuit (Penn State, Rutgers, MD). I say that each of the Big Ten teams should play a rotating schedule of the three ACC schools (one team a year). Make this the first game of the year. This way, we would get to play our old rivals once per year, but not have to turn any of them into current, relevant rivals. It would also guarantee at least one non-conference game against a power five conference team.

Thoughts?

Yes, I knew that but was originally going to go with 3 ACC teams

adding BC, plus WVU, but then I struggled with how to balance that out with the Big Ten. My edits weren't seamless, I'm afraid.

And aside from that,

with a mandated nine conference games per year, no Big Ten AD will have his/her hands tied by that sort of arrangement

As for the other nonconference games, I'd pay one team to come

to happy valley every year, rotating between various smaller schools. Other nonconference games would rotate between schools in the SEC, and Pac10.

PSU has Maryland and Rutgers in the B1G

They are paying homage to the past by having Rutgers and Maryland in the conference. Pitt is once again up a creek without a paddle being outside the top 20 in PA recruits. Pitt needs to start recruiting exactly how WVU does because going up against PSU and the B1G isnt working out for them.

NP. Same has happened to me in the past.

Art makes a good point, tho. The 9 game conference schedule makes this proposal unlikely.

I just don't have a great desire to play those 3 schools. I suppose it would be better than playing Temple, or Buffalo, but I'd rather play a more varied national schedule against teams of the same caliber as Pitt...maybe a North Carolina type school.

Sure, it would be a tough sell...

but the reality is that strength of schedule is important to the playoff selection process. It not only matter who you play, but also who your opponents play... so I would expect that conference commissioners would encourage all of their members to schedule more power 5 teams. Also, playing regional teams with some history provides a better chance for schools to sell out.

I mean i'd rather this than the garbage OOC we have been playing lately and will play for years to come. But I also want more firepower/brand teams that teams like Michigan has scheduled for years. They always had at least 1 against Notre Dame and another dedent opponent (utah-ish).

Tough sell?

Look up what happened to a football scheduling agreement between the Big 10 and Pac 12

Or

What if we have Pitt play WVU in Beaver Stadium an abbreviated game before a Penn State - Michigan or Penn State - Ohio State game? They can play like 12 minute halves.

A prelim or opening act? What do you think?

That way, the few WVU fans and the few obnoxious Pitt fans can stay and boo Penn State during the main game. We can stop discussing games no one cares about.

Everyone wins.

Pitt home games with them are home games for WVU. Sad...

PSU is scheduled with Pitt, Syr, WVa and VTech through 2025. With 9 BT games per year there will only be 1 OOC game available for a Power 5 opponent unless they are willing to play @ HV with no return game.

Re: Or

Love it!! Kind of like a high school JV game. It's so much fun hating Pitt. And the less we play them, the fewer recruits will equate them with us, so it's a win for our recruiting. I'd love the see a Pitt JV game in the Beav.

Ugh, I just HATE the upcoming nine-game conference schedule

If we had 4 OOC games a year, I'd like the original poster's idea ---- try to play an "Eastern school" (WVU, Pitt, BC, Syracuse) as one of our OOC games while playing a "National team" as one of our other OOC games, then also have 2 "buy games" a year. Do this right, it's still seven home games a year.

But with the 9 B1G games, I really fear we'll never see a "National team" among our OOC games. Only Eastern schools OOC. Ugh.

We will play who Franklin wants to play if they are available when we have open dates. Its up to him, and I don't blame him currently for making sure we play teams that we should be able to beat. As we get better, I would assume our out of conference schedule will get a little better. I used to be on the play Pitt band wagon, being from Western PA, but, to be honest, I really can't stomach too many Pitt fans any more, and could care less if we play them. In fact, I would rather not play them. I would rather play Good teams from other recruiting areas.
