Announcers & commentary thread

In the past we have made fun of student announcers (especially the Nebraska "fist to the back" pair). But, when a university has the premier wrestling program in the country it is disgraceful to have announcers who were as ill-prepared as those working the Maryland dual.

The best entertainment would be, as has been done in the past, to have Jeff Byers radio feed along with the video. If there is a desire to give student announcers an opportunity to gain experience, then they should be properly prepared (and yes that will take effort). Additionally, it would be good to have a knowledgable wrestler or fan nearby for clarifications.

I nominate Bushwood. He could carry on about stalling rules, citing the exact section from the rule book and complain how the officials never call it correctly.

lol. It was a joke. There’s been some discussion about the student announcers last Sunday.

I love listening to Byers calling a match but it’s his passion, not the quality of his play-by-play, that makes him great. He’s fair. He’s informed. But everything from neutral is “pulling in on the head” or “driving through.” On top, if it’s not a cradle, it’s “coming up under the arm.” I’m exaggerating a bit and again, I love listening to him call a match. I’m glad he’s our guy, but he is not great at actually describing what’s happening on the mat. I know - sacrilege

I get your point, but I actually think Jeff’s general avoidance of technique jargon is both a strength and choice of his. He’s able to draw in those mythical “casual fans” that might not exist in most markets, but likely do on radio because he doesn’t make them feel uninformed.

Over the past 15 years or so there have been a few home matches i haven't attended and had to watch on BTN or Big10 plus. A couple of times DT helped with the broadcast, others Chertow had helped. I have listened to the kid announcers a couple times and they are overwhelmed and struggle. When Younashonis was out in Columbus he did numerous OSU matches and was quite good and he lives and works in State College. There are a ton of people who live in the area who could sit in with a kid and add to the broadcast. There is absolutely no reason to put two kids in a situation that promises them failure.

Failure to you, not to them. They get their feet wet in a no-risk situation.

No potential employer is gonna review that match and say they were too awful to hire. Proof: most of ESPN, most of WIP, Skip Bayless, etc.

Failure to bigten+ and the viewing product.
Who here has turned a match off because of the announcers?

Sure, we'll switch audio to Byers, but BTN still gets the ratings and ad revenue. So the product suffers so much that it gets continued air time.

Likewise, possibly the biggest waste of money on earth, including third-world tinpot dictator corruption, is Tom Brady and Tony Romo getting those contracts. Not even their families watch because of the broadcasters.

Nobody cares either way.

I’d pay extra to watch football with just crowd noise and ref mics.

If you paired the students with someone knowledgeable of the sport, it’s a win-win. The student broadcasters would learn more about the sport and they wouldn’t be spouting misinformation. I can see why it may not be feasible from a product introduction cost perspective, but it would only enhance the product if they could

I agree with that. It's great that students get a chance to work on their chosen profession while still in school. But part of that is preparing for what you are broadcasting. Sadly it seems far too common in journalism today.

And it's not like there is a lack of wrestling in the area or wrestlers on campus (not just the team) that they could learn from. Watch some YouTube videos.

Nobody is expecting these guys to be Byers, but they should at least have basic knowledge.

I haven’t turned off a PSU match over it. But I have turned non-PSU matches over it.

I’ll also mention that I’ve watched hockey and soccer on BTN+ and have never thought it was nearly as bad as wrestling. It’s a tough sport to understand; the people paying a premium to stream it aren’t going to be casual fans and I frankly don’t think it’s too much to ask that whoever is running the student broadcast programs make sure the kids calling it know the basics of the sport before having them give it the gusto.

Sometimes I fantasize about being a PSU student broadcaster on B1G+ for a day . . .

. . . every time there was a collar tie or contact to the head, I would get all excited and just scream, “HE’S TRYING TO GET THE CHIN!!!”

This is fair. We'd all like the broadcast to be better.

Then again, it's not like the professional broadcasters are all great either. Take out Byers, Cocaine Shane, and Rock Harrison, and what's left? Maybe a couple of Byers' peers at other schools. But on a regional/national level, Johnson and Gibbons are cliche machines, and the other ESPN guys range from corporate dull to overwrought.

This weekend, Princeton had Patrick Glory paired with a sports broadcaster. Penn had Austin Sommer (Intermat guy) paired with an actual sports journalist/broadcaster. Both sets did a very good job, being knowledgeable and unbiased for the most part. Cornell has a single announcer who is worse than nails on a chalkboard; I find myself yelling at the screen far too often.

Occasionally there are college football games that are shown live on YouTube using only the skycam. It's just the sound of the players and crowd with no announcers using that single camera shot from behind the offense. I turned one on one time and it was two crappy teams like Fresno State and Nevada and I still sat through most of the game because it was so nice to watch.

Was there live therefore didn't hear a student broadcast.
Lucky you. I get to hear them live. They broadcast right behind our seats. So we get to chuckle and cringe live from rec hall. Just can't get away. 😪 😆

I like Sean Kinney, he’s a great pairing with Rock. Malik Amine has been pretty good too.

I honestly love that they have students do the B1G+ broadcasts, but I wish it was an internship deal with credit, and included a short video course on the sport and a mentorship with local experts like Byers, or at least the SID. As it is, it’s a volunteer opportunity for the kids who participate at the college radio station, and assignments are based on interest/availability.

We can barely find out what match Pletcher is on and you think we can figure out how to do that?

I applaud the kids. They did try a little too hard from a sheer 'generic pbp annoucning' perspective. They simply need all around feedback. Tech aspects of wrestling is one thing, but overall development is another. I simply hope they got feedback and they are learning from it. If not, btn+ and PSU since they are part of it, should be ..... - a lot of things already stated.

A fair point for sure

I brought this up in another thread, but the all time greatest wrestling announcer was Ed Aliverti. You older guys would know of him because he was always the head announcer at the NCAA tournament. But he didn’t stop there. He was at local HS events in Washington, his home state and he always did the Washington state HS tournament. He also did international events including the Olympics. And he did it all. He not only did all the announcements, he also sang the national anthem at the beginning of every event. I’m actually not sure what he did for a living, but I know he was the choir director at his church and he gave personal lessons for people who wanted to learn how to sing or speak in public. He was inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1994.

On top of all that, he was just a great person. I had the good fortune to get to know him personally when I lived in WA. He died from cancer in 2010 but will always be remembered.
