I realize we almost lost......
But does anyone else think he might have been sandbagging, and almost got caught with his pants down?
Like he was vanilla, all day to not show anything?
So.....
1. He was, and we smoke Pitt!
2. He wasn’t, and we get smoked!

Thoughts from the board?

I have no doubt the coaches were holding back.

Problem was the team was flat as well. No spark, sleep walking all day.

Tonight they need to play with motivation. The D has to ply for sixty minutes.

More importantly the offense has to win this game. the offense has to have production from the receivers, the line has to sustain the running game, and they have to hold on to the football.

Holding back what? How to tackle? How to take on a block? How To get off a block? How to lineup correctly?

Any chance CJF was holding out Shorter and Stevens to make sure they are in top form for tonight?

From what I saw, he instructed the defense not to use any good tackling technique against App State so as to fool Pitt into thinking we practiced skins against shirts in shorts all preseason.

NO. Didn't anybody notice that the App State QB was fantastic. Why are people so unwilling to give the other guy some credit. PSU was fortunate to win a hard fought game against an opponent that played exceptionally well. Especially the QB. Even their backup QB came in for one play and made an awesome pass. It was remarkable. I hope we don't see another performance like it going forward.

The only thing that seemed odd to me was Thompkins not being targeted. Have to believe he couldn’t get open.

Some of the substitution patterns seemed forced....like he just wanted ot get these guys in the game and play with different combos. Lots of experimenting, don't think it was sandbagging but experimenting with different players and situations to learn some things. Luckily we won the game.

On the defensive side we have to remember AS only scored 3 offensive points through 3 quarters. The QB for AS turned into Montana in the 4th Q and couldn't be stopped.

Agree. Thompkins was a go to receiver last year. He was invisible in the App State game except for fair catching punts. I thought this was strange. Maybe they found out in the preseason that Hamler and Shorter are so good that Thompkins is odd man out.

Exactly...Appy State's QB played lights out...the backup QB throws a picture-perfect sideline pass giving them the ball on our 2 yd line...the on-sides kick...a quick, very elusive RB...100 yd KO return...everything was working for them.

Inexperienced team at number of positions getting some valuable experience. Will be much improved this week. Pitt will still be Pitt. It will be over by the end of the 3rd quarter.
