AS THE BIRD TURNS (IOWA STUFF)

It’s the part where no one ever has been anywhere near a good as Spencer, per GIA, that makes the post so funny. No one close to him but we’ve had 8-9 just like him (splitting 17 with Kemerer) over the past 8 years?

I’ve gotten to the point where I find great entertainment value in his posts. I’m starting to think it’s meant to be funny and I find it so.
The only thing funny about it is the world his mind is in.

I’ve said before, many wrestlers, and athletes for that matter, want and need an “us against the world” hammer mentality. It’s not a gratitude mentality. I get it. PSU isn’t everyone’s cup of tea just like Iowa isn’t for others.
I have said this numerous times. If a kid wants to win championships Penn State is where they try to go. If a kid wants to wrestle for a program that has some spectacular history and you can grab a few Big10 titles, Iowa City is your pick.l

Saw that statement several times from him. Lol. I don't believe he realizes how it's an incredibley stupid thing to say let alone continually repeat it.
For that he receives... 3 coons! 🦝🦝🦝
Self awareness is essential for one to realize one's limitations and one's moments of stupidity. That guy has no self-awareness.

Every once in a while, there are some funny nuggets over there. This had me chuckling:

Yesterday I was able to watch the MN State tournament when 174-197 wrestled for Iowa. Can’t do that today. I think I’ll watch whales mating on PBS.

I mean, if whale porn is your thing, who are we to judge?

Eviction Bob claims next year is the first level playing field and Iowa will start winning 50% of the National Championships. He's such a fuking douche. (Not because of this wrestling claim) I don't wish bad things on people but he's one that really pushes it.

A timely HUD audit might do the trick

Let’s see, if I were forced to judge . . . I’d conclude that choosing to watch whale porn rather than Brands-Assad-Warner wrestle is better than choosing to house colonies of raccoons (and other animals) in one’s anus.
🤷‍♂️
Wowza.

This post on the Iowa board by MSU158 is about Haines:

"Against the top guys, he is winning 1 takedown matches. Having to do that multiple times at NCAA's is very hard to pull off. Maybe he does. But, he is FAR from a lock to do so."

I hope the handle indicates a Michigan State visitor, otherwise the irony and lack of self awareness is just too delicious.

You selected a part of his statement. I thought the rest of his post was ok.

He is. He finds refuge there because the enemy of their enemy is their friend (until they decide they can't be bothered with him).

That is a valid point about Levi, though. He's capable of a run that includes multiple low-scoring, close matches -- as Dean did last year. But that route is fraught with risk.

You are right.

No problem with the rest, but the paragraph I included could apply to most of Iowa's wrestlers.
I thought it was a fairly objective post.

After Spencer and Woods, with the possible exception of a Warner who somehow finds his lost interest Iowa doesn't have anybody who could win a title no matter how many breaks they get, or close matches they pull out. So "national champion" and "Iowa wrestler" don't get used in sentences together very often. The entire Levi conversation in not applicable to 70%, probably 80% of Iowa's lineup.

True enough.

That said, the more I think about it, the more I think Murin could take 3rd this year. He's not beating Yianni or Sasso. But after that? Gomez is injured. Murin has a 3-1 record vs. Thomas.

Some other guys could beat him (Johnson, Mauller, Parco, Van Ness, Henson), but he's capable of beating all of them, he doesn't make mistakes, and he has plenty of experience.

Now please excuse me while I go shower in bleach

I always see a path for our guys to get the natty, if one falls.. I see a path to 3rd. If they fall short, I see a path to 5th....

If the opponent wins, there is an an opportunity for victory!

If he somehow gets past Friday morning. Murin isn't a chocker, but finally securing that medal with the esophagus narrowed will be a task. Marinelli never learned to breathe properly on Fridays. We shall see.

My fan personality has no interest in objective thinking and does exactly the same.

I just enjoy being brutally objective about the Hawkeyes.

and it should have been 6th. There’s no way he’s beating Hamiti in that last match without the medical forfeit - it would go against his destiny
Also there was no guarantee he would've placed even if he hadn't busted a rib against Griffith. His first consi was Amine, whom he only beat 2-0 at B10s.

The Paniro-Mauller Big 12 final was highly entertaining. Both those guys are really good and should be clear favorites over Murin. Paniro in particular is a terrible matchup for Murin. He’s so fast and energetic that Murin will have to try to scramble with him or get called for multiple stalling if he wrestles his wait it out style. While Murin has demonstrated the ability to beat Van Ness consistently himself, I think SVN has a better chance to beat Paniro than Murin because SVN can win a 12-10 match if necessary. I can’t see Murin doing that. I would still take Paniro over either one of I had to bet, though.

He has never faced Mauller. Lost to Johnson this year, 3-1 SV. Which is kinda my point, he has demonstrated history of grinding just about anyone down to that type of match. (Well, not Yianni and probably not Sasso ... but he did do it to Sasso once.)

Not to say he would win all of them. But he usually does give himself that chance.

He did get manhandled by Millner last year. That sticks out a lot. And that feels like a quarters or R12 type matchup.

Just to be clear: I'm not picking Murin for 3rd. He'll get out-athleted and doesn't have much margin for error. But I can see where it's not an unreasonable outcome.

Marinelli was a 4x Big Ten Champ (and 3-1 against VJ). I can see why they liked him.

I like Warner. He shows up and competes. He is an extremely good sportsman who shakes hands and conducts himself well win or lose. He always wrestles well at the NCAA Tournament. He can lose to a pretty big list of wrestlers, but he can beat anyone in this 197 lb. field just the same. I hate that so many fans bag on this guy. He is just a humble 4 time AA.

Totally agree JPW3. I said before that S Lee is the reason Warner gets ragged on by Iowa fans.

And Warner was their only NCAA finalist in 2022 keeping their streak of at least one finalist alive.
It's not a knock on Marinelli, it's a question as to why the near universal disdain towards Warner. He was 7th, a 5th seed, 4th, and 2nd.
Same reason Michigan reveres Bo Schembechler. Win a lot of B10 titles, less successful after that.

The big difference is that Marinelli never puffed his chest about how B10 was more important that the national title.

All true but I long for the days when I don't have to watch him push his opponents out of bounds for two straight minutes when he is on top.

Those guys would bring Gang Lu back from the dead if it helped them win. Not a lot of morality in that group. They have a really good team year in and year out but the stuff they do as a coaching staff and fan base would make anyone cringe. Win at all costs must really suck when the "at all costs" thing is still happening and the winning drifted off to sleep. Terry runs around like a one armed waitress at the Blue Bird yelling insane stuff the entire tournament (when he isn't stuck in his rocking motion tick). I can't for the life of me understand why a recruit would even consider that place. It is highly unlikely you will improve during your career and your body will be like that of a 70 year old man after 5-6 years in that room. I guess you have the luxery of "the most knowledable fanbase in wrestling" questioning your heart to pick you up. God forbid you are not a white redneck. Sending AJ to Iowa City would probably punish him more in the long run than a simple prison stint. We should sentence all of the criminal elements in wrestling to a 6 year stay in Iowa City. You talk about punishment!
I was there at the time of Gang Lu 😢.

He feels less slappy/punchy and far more likable this year. I honestly think he may finally have the confidence to win matches rather than hope for attrition (which is ironic given he got two InjDefs last weekend).
