Awwww Pitt

Another thing that is too bad is that they may have to play with a third string qb next week, as Slovis didn’t play in the second half and Pati basically couldn’t move at the end of the game.
Yep, at half time of the pitt game I was texting with a friend that is a big pitt fan and I commented that Slovis might end up in Allegheny General Hospital. Then when he didn't play to start the 2nd half, maybe he was in AGH. Tennesee started very slow, continued to make big errors such as the blocked punt (after pitt got close earlier you'd think that UT would adjust....) and still pulled it out after blowing their lead. There is a reason they were favored in the game against a higher ranked team.....

And they’ll likely lose to at least one of them.
They play Western Michigan on the road next week, which beat them last year when Pitt had a better team than they have this year. Pitt is extremely banged up after the first two games, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they struggle next week. Their offense wasn’t that good with the starting qb, and they may have to play Western Michigan with a third string qb.

Is it the 80s and bowls are still supposedly relevant?
Or is it never and last year impacts this year with college football?

Given that Purdue is returning more than any team in the Conference, yea it is very relevant, but I wouldn't expect a moron such as yourself to be able to grasp that fact.

You realize there's a portal now, right? Returning players is almost absolutely irrelevant

Yeh looks like the Pitters plans of knocking off Alabama in the playoff will have to be put on hold. LOL
Cincinnati, ND and Pitt out of the playoff picture already. So which three SEC teams make it this year?

Probably not with A&M losing and Bama had a "bad win" today.
Big Ten winner, SEC winner, at-large SEC team then who know Big Ten east runner-up could have a shot honestly.
And Pitt probably isn't technically out if they run the table because the committee could "devalue" this loss as Slovis missed the second half.

Only if Michigan is the runner up.

Returning players from a 9-4 team that beat Tenn in their bowl game is irrelevant? Good Lord, you're such a moron, it isn't even funny.
When you say 9-4 you're counting a meaningless bowl game. Bowl games are completely irrelevant which is why so many opt out. More and more will start doing that.

I have a little secret to tell: this Pitt team is going to lose more games this season despite their schedule. This Pitt team is no where near as good as they were last year, especially on offense. They have to play at Miami, and I don’t think that they’ll win that game. I also doubt whether they’ll be able to outscore UNC.

Oh I agree--especially is Slovis isn't 100%. Slovis isn't Pickett but far better than Patti
I don't think Miami is very good. UNC is going to be tough for them. Duke isn't a layup either.

Unfortunately, it felt like it was only a matter of time with his injury. He’s tough, but that line had more holes than Swiss cheese. Never seen so many open shots at a quarterback before.
Pretty amazing when all spring ball and this summer we kept hearing about how great their o line would be since all dive starting lineman came back for another year. Are they healthy? What happened?

When it comes to the run game, I think the biggest issue right now is the adjustment from the zone blocking scheme to traditional man blocking. There was a learning curve under Whipple when he implemented the former, and that might be what’s happening here.

I also think Cignetti’s run plays in general are a little too bland. There’s a lot of “window dressing” with pre-snap motion, but after that it’s mostly just inside handoffs. Not a lot of variety and that’s allowed opposing front sevens to pinch inside without respecting the alternative.

As for passing, we’ve been a little stubborn when it comes to adding extra blockers. Almost every play, a RB or TE was slipping out. Tennessee saw that they could send pressure and if they could get past the OL, there was no one there to protect Slovis.

I apologize for such a long post, especially about Pitt on your own site, but I love discussing this type of stuff.

I think a bit of it is Pitt fans don’t seem to realize that losing players like Pickett and Addison will cause most programs not named Bama, Georgia, or OSU to take a step back.

Definitely. Honestly, I think losing Addison hurt more than Pickett. Slovis is good enough to score points in an offense tailored to his strengths. Meanwhile, Addison’s presence was definitely missed today. We had several drops by our receivers that, in my opinion, helped change outcome of the game, particularly one in the end zone that was tipped and intercepted by a Tennessee defender.

There’s definitely a portion of the fanbase that thinks we’re ready to compete with those programs after last season, but I’d say we’re more on the level of Utah or OK State right now. We just don’t have the depth to compete with those guys. When you don’t bring in top 25 classes every year, you’re going to get worn down in a game like today where he had several starters leave with injuries.

In the past six years, James Franklin has won as many major bowl games (two) as Pitt has since 1938. Two major bowl victories in the past 83 seasons for Pitt: the 1977 and the 1982 Sugar Bowls.
We're back to pretending bowls still matter while kids opt out since even they know they're meaningless

And then there is the little thing that Pitt has MAC-level talent.

Kudos for handing in against Tennesse (who played a horrifically foolish game).

The Legend of 'Iron Mike'

Before he gained fame as a National Football League player and head coach, ESPN studio analyst, and national spokesperson, Michael Keller “Iron Mike” Ditka Jr. was an All-American tight end at Pitt.
Immensely skilled and fiercely competitive, Ditka would lead Pitt in receiving for three consecutive years. He also was a standout linebacker and punter. In addition, Ditka played baseball and basketball at Pitt and was the intramural wrestling champion.
In 1961, Ditka was a first-round draft choice of the Chicago Bears; he would help to lead them to the 1963 NFL Championship. A four-time All-Pro, Ditka also was a member of the Dallas Cowboys team that won Super Bowl VI.
Ditka would go on to coaching fame in the NFL, spending 11 seasons as the top man with the Chicago Bears (winning Super Bowl XX) and three seasons as coach of the New Orleans Saints.
Pitt retired Ditka’s number 89 jersey. He is both a College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee.

We’re at an interesting point when it comes to talent. I think this is the first time I can say that Pitt has guys that are near the top of the ACC in every position unit, aside from the receivers and defensive backs. Where recruiting has really hurt us is depth, with the exception of the defensive line. Just too many areas where talent quickly thins out.

Ultimately, I think that’s what will hold us back and keep us around the same level as schools like Utah. No disrespect to them because they’re a very good program, but there’s also a ceiling there.

The talent in the ACC is bad and getting worse…even Clemson.

With a buffoon of a coach like Duzzy, kudos to the Pitt kids for playing hard and with enthusiasm. But this is a weak team.
