getting a chance to watch the matches... 4 PSU guys on... Nolf should have been 5! Regardless, question for the board.... watching IMARs match... a good one with Massa... IMAR got a stalling call with 6 seconds left in the 3rd... Should he have received one earlier? If so, how soon?
I ask this q for healthy input by all on our favorite topic.
Next Q... if the 3rd period was the first (0-0 score), should he have and do you think he would have received a stalling call?

I imagined that the IMar Massa match would have more fireworks, instead it looked a lot like the Gilman Suriano match, a single takedown followed by over-caution.

Like Suriano, Massa never really threatened even though the score was close, but close enough to allow himself a good idea of what he needs to work on to get past IMar. He's not far off. I like Suriano's chances of getting past Gilman more than Massa's chances of getting past IMar though. This year anyway.

As with Gilman, IMar shut down his offense after the TD. IMar used more of the mat than Gilman and that's probably why he got dinged for stalling. You rarely see refs hit a guy twice in a match so long as they hold their ground near the center and not backpedal. But yeah, both IMar and Gilman were done wrestling after their takedown.

#7 match: 141 - McCrystal (Neb) vs. Thorn (Minny)
Per 1: McCrystal with a double underhook, stands up Thorn and trips him to his back for the TD, 2-0. Quick esc, 2-1. McCrystal tries a throw, stalemated. McCrystal really has a strong base. Thorn in on a head outside single for a TD late in the period, 2-3. End
Per 2: McCrystal on bottom. Tries a roll, and then another, but Thorn stays with him. OOB with 1:14 left. Cuts him after RT is over 1 min, 3-3. McCrystal with a shot from left field gets the the leg but it's stalemated with 18 sec left. End
Per 3: Thorn takes bottom. Has 1:11 in RT. Out in 9 sec, so he has 1:02 in RT, and a 4-3 lead. Stalemate at 1:37. Thorn in on a single, McCrystal sprawls, stalemate at 1:03. Thorn in on a high crotch but McCrystal stuffs it and counters for a TD and 2 NF, 7-4, and RT is eliminated. Seems to be a video challenge, but it's upheld. 32 sec left. Thorn up and out 7-5. Thorn tries a headlock, nearly gets behind but McCrystal held on to the ankle, and gets the win.

Side comment -- both showed flashes of why they are good, and also flashes of how they can be beaten. 141 is so wide open.

#6 match: 125 - Suriano vs. Gilman (Iowa)
I did a PBP of this during the dual, so I'll refrain from that.
Gilman moved to his right the entire time at the start of the match, so Nick may have been surprised when he shot in on the right leg for the single which got the TD in the 1st period.
Suriano spent too much time in the 2nd and 3rd period hand fighting, a lot of which Gilman initiated.
Still feel good about the match.

#5 match: 125: Lambert (Neb) vs. Lizak (Minny)
Per 1: Long scramble but Lizak nearly got stacked in it, and ended up giving up the TD, 2-0. Lizak esc after 27 sec, 2-1. Lots of hand fighting but nothing else in period
Per 2: Lambert took bottom, and got a reversal in about 25 sec, 4-0. Has Liazak in trouble, and pinned him with 1:07 left in the 2nd.

#4 match: 174: Mark Hall vs. Alex Meyer (Iowa)
Another match I did PBP during the dual, so I'll refrain from that.
Meyer spent a lot of time controlling Hall's right wrist. Hall spent too long dealing with that. Meyer also would use 2-on-1s on Hall's right arm. 1 time, even with Meyer controlling the right arm, Hall hit a duck under and nearly got the TD -- that was the one that was waved off in the 1st period. Lastly, Hall got a little sloppy on Meyer's late TD.

#3 match: 165: Logan Massa (Mich) vs. IMar (Illini)
Per 1: Nothing close to a TD thru 2 min. IMar in on a single, and gets the TD with 35 sec left, 2-0. IMar is strong and he's fast. End
Per 2: Massa on bottom. OOB with 1:37. Mass out at 1:28, 2-1. OOB with 50 sec. End

Per 3: IMar on bottom. His RT is under 1 min, so that's not a factor. He's out at 1:30, 3-1. So far, all of Massa's shots have been straight in. IMar is too fast for that, and he's also quick on the counters. Stall warning on IMar with 7 sec left -- could have given it much sooner, as he didn't take a shot in the period until 2 sec left on a counter.

#2 match: 184: Nickal vs. Sammy Brooks (Iowa)
Already did PBP, so I'll refrain.
Such a nice spladdle by Bo. Brooks did get in deep on a low single, but Nickal didn't seem to be at all concerned.

I'm guessing Zain - Sorensen will be #1

#1 match: 149: Zain vs. Sorensen (Iowa)
Already did PBP, so I'll refrain
I'm still surprised Sorensen got out at the end of the 3rd. Restart on 17 sec ... if Zain rides him out, he wins. Nice job by Sorensen.
Watching it a 2nd time, I thought Zain looked better than I remembered. Sorensen just upped his game versus previous encounters.
BTW, I hadn't even noticed the booing by some members of the crowd at the end of the match. I guess they wanted stalling called on Zain -- not even close.

Looked like Meyer was looking to use a Russian-Tie on Hall's right arm as often as possible (i.e., Meyer's right hand on Hall's right wrist and his left hand high on the 2-on-1). Agree with you that Hall allowed him to burn too much time just dancing around with his (Hall's) right arm and wrist.

Also agree regarding Zain not being able to effectively ride Sorenson - especially late when he only needed to ride him out for 17 seconds on re-start. Again, very un-Zain like as he is an absolute hammer on top. BTW, also agree the ride-out at the end.....in the latter half of the ride-out, Zain threw in both legs from behind in a "crab ride" which is absolutely not stalling (you can tilt someone either direction from that ride) - if anything, they would ultimately call the stalemate, but would never call a stall on the Crab-ride. Because Zain threw it in in the latter half of the ride-out, no stalemate was called because it wasn't in all that long - again, no way stalling though.

I noticed the booing at the time.. and if I understand the rules, even with a stall call Zain wins anyway. He had the RT tiebreaker.

I thought IMar could (should) have been dinged for stalling at least a minute earlier. He was playing keep away almost the entire 3rd period, once they both to neutral. The lack of initiative was rather obvious IMO.
