B1Gs, 2nd Day, Consolation Matches ... post comments as responses ***

Iowa & Ohio State tied in Team Race heading into 285 bout ...

both have 120 points.

Ohio State can't score anymore points.

Telford is going for Iowa in the 285 Final. If he wins, then Iowa is the B1G Team Champ.

It's a shame to see

Delgado's career wind down like this. It was always gdm frustrating to watch Nico wrestle against his counter style, but still the kid is a gamer. I don't suppose he'll be 100% for nationals.

Even though Penn State finished 5th, it was a great tournament. Just when I thought tOSU had it in hand, they didn't. Just when I though Iowa was a cinch to win it, they didn't. Michigan and Illinois also were stronger than I thought they would be. Surprises in almost every weight class.

For Penn State, a great win for McIntosh. The inability for Hammond, Frey or Moss to finish 9th or higher was a downer. The questions regarding Gulibon are back; hopefully for just two weeks. Brown's loss was a surprise to me (I was convinced he would win it this year), but nationals can fix it all. Kudos to Conaway, Beitz and McCutcheon who looked solid. Hopefully the injuries to McCutcheon and Lawson are minor.

Finally, congratulations to Iowa and Ohio State. Never like losing the championship title, but I think we'll be very competitive next year.

Guilbon got royally jobbed by absurd and intentionally inconsistent officiating twice! Name any other critical match where a wrestler got jobbed in the Semi's or Finals the way Guilbon did against Taylor??? Guilbon escaped late in the 3rd to take a 1-point lead and the official hit him with a stall only moments after the escape - the wrestlers had only been on their feet in the neutral position for an extremely short time and the official calls stalling on JG to take the match away from him??? Complete joke of a call and horribly inconsistent -- you can't point to another absurd call like that in the tournament. JG had the match won with time expiring and the official makes a complete crap, horribly inconsistent BS call to take the match, and a position in the finals, away from Guilbon.

I suspect Cael would agree with you given some of the comments he made to one of the refs at the conclusion of one of Jimmy's matches. I also suspect that he would also say that Jimmy left a lot of points on the mat (he made a similar comment reference Morgan after he won the championship) and when you keep a match tight, you can end up at the mercy (or lack of) of the ref. Doesn't justify what happened, but that is why Cael puts so much emphasis on scoring points at every opportunity.

That mentality can also hurt you - especially when you are wrestling a guy who likes to do nothing but counter off your aggression to get you out of position. Brown is a classic example of this (Mega is another when he wrestles Delgado). Brown's offense is not as precise against better opponents and he tends to get "out of position" if he gets to aggressive (and is really not a good scrambler at all). Evans stalled and waited for Brown's aggressiveness to hurt him in earlier matches - I would argue that Kokesh did very little today except counter on Brown's aggression. Honestly, I think Brown has adopted the correct strategy against Evans - let him stall, don't play to your weaknesses. If the Official is not going to force him to wrestle, don't do anything stupid or "force" the match - only take a high percentage shot and don't give him the chance to counter and scramble.

Brown wrestled a bad match against Kokesh IMO - he can not "out scramble" him and 90% of his shots are going to end up in a scramble situation. Matt was too absurdly aggressive relative to his offensive skills in attempting to "force" that match -- did you notice how often Kokesh wrestled on the edge with one-foot out as all cheating, stalling, exclusively "counter" wrestlers do??? Brown did exactly what Kokesh wanted him to do -- make stupid, overly-aggressive shots and end up in a scramble.... He paid the price for that foolish strategy IMO.

You don't have to like how Brown wrestled in the finals match, but to call Brown's strategy 'foolish' is over the top.

Don't think it is over the top at all -- Brown is not going to beat Kokesh in a high-scoring match IMO. The only thing Kokesh wanted to do was hold Brown's hand and dance.....he was hoping Matt would make a bad shot so he could counter (how about Kokesh wrestling from the edge). Was a 50/50 match if Brown just let it be low scoring -- he had no shot once he made horrendous, stupid, out-of-position shot after horrendous, stupid out-of-position shot in an attempt to force the action....and then in a desperate attempt to come from behind. The expression, "when you dig yourself a hole and you hit bottom.....stop digging".

Brown wrestled an OK match. If he could have gotten that first takedown (ended in a scramble) - which he almost did as his foot almost got back in time - the match would have been different. Instead he was behind and had to force the action.

I thought the first stall call against Jimmy in the Taylor match was unfortunate but was according to the rule (dumb rule). The second stall call came when Jimmy backed straight off the mat without being even touched by Taylor. That was an unfortunate decision on Gulibon's part.

Really? I didn't see the match, but was told by another poster that JG was backing up but Taylor had an O/U on him.

He didn't back straight off the mat without being touched. Taylor was trying to get both under hooks in and JG was driven off the mat. Seemed like a quick call to me given there wasn't any stalling leading up to this. They called him for the kick out in the first period but I saw quite a few worse over the weekend that weren't called.

I just went back and watched the match. You are correct Jimmy is pushed by Taylor. I was wrong.
