Beating a Dead Horse But I Feel So Bad for Nick Suriano...

Tough break all around but that's wrestling. The weight opens up for him next year. Cruz and Lizak are good but not on Nick's level.

he would have made 6 in the finals and won it this year as true freshman.....what a drag but great things to come for him in spite of this setback.
Yea, thinking ahead to next year with all 5 finalists back plus Nick, Cortez and Jimmy's replacement. WOW

2018 Pre Season Rankings:
125 Suriano #1-#3
133 Cortez ?
141 ????
149 Retherford #1
157 Nolf #1
165 Joseph #1-#2
174 Hall #1-#2
184 Nickal #1
197 McCutcheon #3
285 Nevills #2-#3

That's sick. RS Hall next year if he still wants it and replace with Rasheed. Cassar? will battle with MM. Give Moss 141 as a senior and RS JLee.

Agree that next year's team will be unbeatable, assuming good health for everyone. But this year, when we saw Cortez go down and Suriano get injured, we still see a national championship team.

I'm slightly worried that Penn State has 5 finalists, like last year, and might only get 2 champions, like last year. I would like to think that Joseph can beat Martinez, and that Hall can beat Jordan, and that Nickal can beat Dean, but I really think that Zain and Nolf are the only locks.

Locks are people that you would be very surprsed if they lost even a single match next season..

I can't remember the last time a team had two "locks" that wasn't Penn State (Ruth and Taylor as sophomores and seniors)

Also Nickal is a heavy favorite next year. His worst case this year is two total losses, one against a senior 3x NCAA champion in the finals (and I think he wins the match tonight)

I'm confident that Hall gains enough weight to be a full sized 174lber and he could become another unbeatable one.

If Suriano recovers fully, we could easily have 4 or 5 undefeated national champions next year, all of whom score massive amounts of bonus.

Add in Joseph, a returning finalist, Nevills a returning AA, and the very solid Cortez

Yeah.. I'm not worried. These are good problems to have.

People make this incorrect assumption.

Hall's US freestyle weight is 74kg (163).

He's not going to start packing on mass in the off season.

In fact, in spring for the US Open, he has to cut back to 74kg (163).

As long as Hall is focused on US Freestyle 74kg, he's always going to be an undersized 174 - and that's just fine. Not having to cut will serve him well during the long & grueling seasons.

Assuming he goes to Junior Worlds again, he will be making the cut next fall again.

If everyone stays healthy and doesn't redshirt, the all time points record (170, Iowa 1997) is definitely in play.

This is true, however, aren't the weight classes due to change soon? If so they might align better with 174 lb weight class. I realize this isn't until 2018, but the weights would be announced well before that I'm sure.

Huge jump from 74 to 86kg.

I think makes total sense to add an 80kg class (176 lbs)

Very very sad..For the SURIANO's but he will be on the podium.
Yes especially since he almost majored both guys in the finals this evening...Just think how he is feeling....Oh well he will be on a big time mission next season....Gotta get Nick Nevills to hit the weights HARD to put on 15 pounds of muscle and he will give Snyder all he can handle...Medbery wrestles him tough because he is so strong....Needs a mean streak as well....Nick has all the skills....

I actually think NN can benefit more from a good core strength program, and more lean muscle, less bulk. Down to say, 245?

Mark does not need a ton of extra muscle mass. If he weighs a comfortable 180 the rest of the 74 pounders are not closing any gap.
