What does everyone think the chances are of their being a spring game this year? I know it’s REALLY early but it would be nice to have something to do besides sit at home / go to work all the time like I’m living the movie Groundhogs day.

I had this conversation this morning with my wife. If it happens I think it'll be with limited attendance and no tailgating.

The crowd at a BW game is usually an easy one for Intercollegiate Athletics to manage...don't need ushers, don't need to be taking tickets, etc. Just hire some people to half-heartedly check people as they come through the gates, hire some security, and you're all set.

This year, you'd need to be ticketing (or some other way limiting the attendance), figure out how to socially distance the crowd and pay ushers to enforce it, etc. With the current financial situation, I don't see PSU shelling out the additional $ for a game in which they aren't taking back any $ (even if it was possible to have some level of attendance).

Very true.

I’d pay $15 bucks to attend..

The key is just being able to go through spring practice. Having an additional day of practice instead of BW game is more beneficial.
Well yeah, ultimately I want the team to win as many games as possible .. I just think it would be nice to get to enjoy the spring game.

No way any spring events on campus are happening with fans. No BB, Hockey, Wrestling, WVB, THON, B1G Wrestling, Olympic Trials, BW Game, Graduation, etc... book it!

What about pushing spring practice back a couple weeks and then having a blue white game in early May after the students are gone. I've heard that as an option at a couple other schools though those states are more open than Pennsylvania is

If they played games, they will definitely spring practice.

Live game to end it? I'm guessing no fans, if they don't just have regular practice and no cameras.

If they let you take this in I think I have an idea ....

Phil thinks no fans, just family. He also expects the Spring to startAs month later than usual.
The NCAA has extended the dead period into May which means no official visits. I doubt the BW game even happens. I think there would have been an announcement by now if it is going to happen.

☝️ this....

Once they extended the dead pd it almost assuredly meant no BW game. As much as it's a nice fun weekend for all of us to go up and hang out that game is really about recruiting.

Not happening. They can’t even decide what to do with season tickets yet. No way there are fans at blue white.

So here we are, March 9th, states are opening up outdoor events with 30% capacity. So if my math is correct, we could get just under 32,000 fans into the Beave for Blue/White. This is probably about what B/W gets on average. It is very possible, by Mid-April.

I think the B/W game would be a great jump start to the season and to try and inject some optimism and energy back into the team. Plus, would be great for the town.

Unfortunately, it would also be a drain on the ICA $ at a time when they are bleeding money. Don’t see it happening.

Oh so its no different than game day? ;)

why would it "be a drain"? they can charge for parking and concessions in and around the stadium. And, the team needs a positive appearance after the horrible season last year and the refusal to play in a bowl game.

i would love to be wrong about my previous post on this saying no game with the dead period extended, even if it is without fans and only school personnel.

Would hope that at least 10% could go in, even if it meant that team gets to allow 10-20 people in per player/staff and no outside fans

well, with yesterday's CDC guidelines that those vaccinated can congregate, just check for a card at the gate.

Just like that, Mark Woganrich just posted this:

Speaking on the Penn State Coaches Show, Barbour said that Penn State is "going to push really hard" to entertain fans for football games at Beaver Stadium and at other sports venues this fall. Those plans will follow all COVID-19 guidelines that remain in place and will depend on the progress of vaccinations, Barbour added.

But the athletic director said she is hopeful that Beaver Stadium and other sports venues will host "as many Penn Staters, as many fans as want to be" there.

“Whether that means that they’re vaccinated or wearing masks, whatever it is," Barbour said. "So all of our efforts, all of our planning, is to be able to have full venues, and we're just going to have to monitor the COVID situation and the advice. But we’re going to push really hard, we're going to prepare for venues where every Penn Stater who wants to come, and who has a ticket, has the opportunity to do that."

Barbour was more guarded about conducting, or allowing fans to attend, a Blue-White Game in April to cap spring football practice. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf recently announced that outdoor events could be held at 20 percent of venue capacity. Technically, that would allow Penn State to hold a Blue-White Game with about 21,000 fans at Beaver Stadium.

Penn State begins spring football practice March 15 but has not announced plans to conduct a Blue-White Game. Barbour did not specifically address the popular public scrimmage, either.

She did, however, mention that Penn State views the process of bringing back fans to events from near-term and long-term perspectives.

"As much as we would love to have community members, our fans from all over the state and all over the region, back in State College, I do think we have to take a little bit of the long view in terms of really making sure that we do everything we can to protect our community, to protect our students, our staff, our coaches," she said. "And to make sure that the trajectory of where this virus is going, that we keep it going in the right direction. So we continue to monitor that as it relates to the spring."

Barbour referenced Penn State's plans for holding some form of an in-person graduation ceremony for the Class of 2021 and for returning to full in-person classes this fall as positive signs for the athletics department.

"We want to make sure, from an athletics perspective, that we do everything we can to help protect those opportunities and help ensure that those will be available to our greater community," Barbour said.

Working in HS athletics and trying to plan a fall season currently and then start spring sports april 17, our mantra for the last month is that it is a day by day plan and everything is fluid. We expect changes and quick changes with every new data point that comes out. I'm sure the PSU FB staff is in the same boat, I hope that Sandy, Barron and Wolf have that same mindset so that it can happen.

They should have a seat lottery for BW game. 10K winners get 2 tickets and parking pass. Charge $50 per entry with $5 being nonrefundable to cover costs. Nah. Makes too much sense.

They'd have to have some sort of system to determine who can attend the BW game - if they cap at 20,000, demand will way outstrip that and they can't just have a free for all of people showing up and not being allowed in.

Ideally, something like a free lottery among season ticket holders (I would assume you would "opt in") to determine who would get available tickets. Or at most a nominal fee per ticket - I suspect though it would open up the flood gates for them charging for BW tickets every year.

Base on this part of what she said I doubt that you have regular fans in the stadium. I could see where player's families and UP students and faculty and staff would be allowed to attend. Seems like they don't want to bringing people from out of the area to the game. Make some sense as the fans will be downtown shopping eating and drinking.
