Bo Bassett announces on Tuesday

Good lord people, i doubt there is a person posting here that knows any real info. Let the kid have his day and move on. Would love to see him at PSU trying to accomplish his goals, but if not so be it.
Whatcha talking about? As noted, everyone is just spit-balling and speculating here. No one has scooped Bassett or spoiled his announcement.

If you're trying to control the spit-balling and speculation, good luck with that.

On the bright side, if it’s Iowa, they’ll teach him to slow his pace down and learn the importance of tying up, not shooting, wrestling the edge and to enjoy the thrill of being tied 1-1 going into SV.
You forgot the most important piece to the Iowa offensive formula. The referee glare, silently demanding a stall call.

Alternative perspective for those who can’t imagine a wrestler like Bassett wanting to go to Iowa after seeing them get curb stomped the other night —

“How cool would it be to be THE guy that helped turn around a faltering storied program like Iowa, restored them to their former glory, and made D1 wrestling competitive again.”

Someone with that mindset might even imagine a 2nd statue being erected outside Carver-Hawkeye Arena one day with his likeness. You never know what might motivate a teenager.
I heard this about another guy a few years ago. Last I heard his mom needed new glasses.

I

I posted this over at GIA:

Let's be real. If he was chasing the money, I think he is savvy enough to not say so. He would say the money is about the same and I am going where it feels best. That is the best public face for Bo and for the school. And Bo is media savvy that way. Some in the big money sports (mostly BB) want everyone to know how big their bag was for some perverse validate. Bo does not strike me as that guy.

And.....I have no idea, but if I had to wager my $83, I think he is going to be an ............................ IOWA HAWKEYE

I am PSU thru and thru, but this feels like Iowa to me
There’s an 83% chance that the fan base of 3 out of the 4 schools still in the running for Bo’s services will be disappointed with Bo’s selection of a school following tomorrow evening’s dual meet.

Blowing right past disappointment, and assuming Bo goes as a true frosh in Fall ’26 (why would such an uber-phenom not?), what Lion gets first crack? Whether SVN, Blaze, Tyler, or Duke, gimme blue over black.

I have looked at the recruiting pictures with Brands et al and he seems genuinely happy in the pictures. That is why I said Iowa.

I would add I have never ever believed the NIL sums that are thrown around in any sport, let alone the Olympic sports. Does anyone really believe that some collective at any school is shelling out $5M for a wrestler? Football coaches just would not let that happen.

I disregard numbers being floated around in an open bidding negotiation because it's in multiple parties' interests to float fictional numbers. The candidate potentially benefits if suitor A thinks it needs to compete againt an unknown suitor's bid. Suitors might benefit from a competing suitor backing away because the bidding got too high. Media benefits from the numbers generating interest.

But in an NIL scenario, the fictional numbers are especially suspect because there's no public disclosure requirement. Lies are easier to peddle when there's no chance the lie can proven wrong.

Lies will also be peddled so future teammates don't find out you got more than them...lol

So, he is their David Taylor.

So, he is their David Taylor.
The difference being the Iowa isn't bringing in the greatest college wrestler of all time as a coach to establish a revolutionary way to approach training and competition that will immediately turn the status quo in the sport on its head. David Taylor going to Iowa instead of PSU is far less likely to be where David Taylor is now.

I meant as a highly touted recruits. DT is often looked as the wrestler who got the ball rolling.

this has been a great topic with countless opinions from all over. I'll add a few more 'thoughts' that I don't think anyone knows the answer to, but will conjure up more opinions:
- With the $$, does his destination actually create more wrestlers to follow?
- Will future teammates like the $$ attention, social media content, and possible distractions?
- Will he tie Cael's record?
- Will big $$ change the wrestler/person for the better (work harder) or worse..
- Wil he turn out differently - less than the hype?
- Will he be the best teammate any one could ask for and tell stories about years later

I think we're all hopeful of PSU getting him. However, I think today's decisions for other wrestlers to follow are different than what they were a few years back.

Wish it wasn’t Iowa, but theres a top recruit every year. No ill feelings towards him at all. Curious to see if they can actually handle a top recruit’s career over 4-5 years without getting him seriously injured, blowing his redshirt at a meaningless dual or tourney, screwing up his postseason seed, changing him into a pushing machine that never takes a shot, etc.
You already know the answer.

I personally will be shocked if it isn't Iowa. I think they have given him the same pitch as Lee. Come here and become the face. At PSU you are just one of many. Come to Iowa City and restore Iowa to greatness.

It's is a great pitch for a kid. Bring your teammates and we will win together.
The biggest and most important part of the Iowa spiel was having Spencer in Carver watching Iowa lightweights dominate his WTT weight. Kind of like having Bo at BJC watching the NLWC dominate.

Too much has happened since then to remember all of the details. Am I correct that Sunderland was the coach who recruited Ed? I also read somewhere that Quentin Wright had a lot to do with convincing Ed to come to Penn State.

Not trying to derail this thread, but I think Ed is a great example for any potential PSU recruit who wants to be an NCAA champion, including Bassett.
You remember correctly. Quentin had to actually promise Mrs. Ruth he would keep Ed out of trouble.

It's Virginia tech all day. I hope I'm right that would be sooooo awesome. Iowa nitwits would implode
It would be funny watching the stories of how he really wanted to go to Iowa and Cael couldn't convince him to go to PSU so Cael had Ira give VATech the money to keep him out of Iowa.

Given that he grew up a Penn State wrestling fan, it probably wouldn’t be that cool.

Well, if a main objective is to be a program changing influence, one school in that list sticks out like a sore thumb.

And as others have stated, surprised that anOSU (Ohio State) didn't make the top 4; thought Tan Tom and company had a legit shot.
PSU is the king on top of the mountain, Oklahoma St appears to be ascending towards the top of the mountain to challenge the king, Virginia Tech is rising. Iowa appears to be the only one stuck in a downward trend. So Iowa is the one sticking out like a sore thumb?

Can you summarize…can’t open it

The Penn State Bank Button Society is at Penn State University.

BO DIDN’T KNOW: You have to go back a ways to find Penn State wrestling finishing a distant 3rd in anything. Let alone a top prospect. Especially one who was just here Friday for the dismantling of Iowa.
This is a different age. Bassett is a grand master at working social media. Narrowing 30 schools down each week. Today announcing his final four. When the decision is in/he will formally announce at 11AM. Simply brilliant from a marketing/PR standpoint. Landed him a deal that will eventually total over $10M ($5M up front). Totally legal. Turned 18 last month. Still another year & a half to go of high-school wrestling. He blows a knee (like Nick Suriano did his freshman yr) he is already paid. Hate NIL & its effect on college sports as much as anyone. But the genie isn’t going back into the bottle.
I think PSU wrestling will survive his loss. It spices up what has become a lopsided rivalry. Like Maryland/PSU football. Wasn’t the same trouncing the Hawkeyes without a PA star to root against (ala Spencer Lee). The smoke/pyrotechnics/laser show/elevated stage. I’ve seen WWF at the BJC. One is becoming more like the other.

I agree with this, he knows after seeing that whooping if he goes to PSU it pretty much gtd PSU dynasty continues for another 8+ years… or if he goes to Iowa/okie state he can be the big diff maker to challenge psu..
No. Iowa needs 8 Bo Bassettsto be able to maybe challenge PSU. Even then I doubt it helps much because PSU will have 10 of them and they will be PSU trained.

The only programs 8 Bo Bassetts help challenge PSU would be Cornell or OkieSt.
