It has been a week since our Board meeting was held on the campus of Penn State Wilkes-Barre. Leading up to that meeting I had every intention of either abstaining or voting against Ira Lubert, the only candidate for Chairman of the Board to succeed Keith Masser. I have known Ira for some years before I was elected as an alumni trustee two years ago. He had disappointed me in the past by not standing up with those of us who have been working very hard to learn the truth behind the Sandusky scandal and the charges against Graham Spanier, Tim Curley, Gary Schultz and of course, the dismissal of legendary head football Coach Joe Paterno. Like my other colleagues elected by the alumni, I have worked hard reviewing the Freeh Report, the vehicle that was used by the NCAA to sanction the University. Later Louis Freeh said that his conclusion in many areas was only his opinion. Wow!
I had the opportunity in Executive Session to ask candidate (the only one for Chairman) Lubert many questions about the past as well as the future. It was in the Executive Session that all trustees had the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates. I asked Ira some pretty tough questions so I could cast a fair and intelligent vote. I learned things I was unaware of from his responses. He convinced the nine of us that he would be a fair, impartial and inclusive Chairman. Now it is time to use the power he now has to be inclusive. I was very pleased to see his very first action as Chairman was to appoint Alumni Trustee Al Lord to the Executive Committee, an excellent choice. I hope that is just the beginning of bringing members of our talented alumni contingent into influential positions. There is much we can accomplish if he uses the power we helped give him for the good of Penn State and not just a chosen few. It is hard to believe, but there are only five "old guard" members of the Board left who voted to fire Joe and began spilling political blood on November 9, 2011.
Time will answer all questions. Chairman Lubert has a tremendous opportunity to make change. I wish him well and will be watching to see if my faith in him was justified. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions you have.
