BoB or Franklin, who's better?

Really too many unique circumstances to judge. BOB led us thru a tough time and held the program together. Coach Franklin came in at a tough time, weathered the storm and has had more success.

Oh, and Coach Franklin did have a losing season in 2020. Granted it was in the midst of the overreactive COVID policies of Gov Wolf, and us turning down a bowl invite that could have gotten us to 500. Nevertheless a losing season.

Forgot about covid.

So here we go, one won coach of the year and never had a losing season. One didn't and had one. Both have never been to the playoffs. Who ya got?

Both have never had a losing season, both have never been to the playoffs. One won coach of the year. Bob did more with less imo. Discuss.

Bob took an NFL team to the playoffs 4 out of 8 seasons.

And this wasn't some super successful franchise. It was the Texans.

Bob also was in a Superbowl

OK, one has won a college coach of the year award, took 4 teams to the NFL playoffs, never had a losing season in college and never went to the college football playoffs. One had a losing season, never took an NFL team or a college team to the playoffs and never won coach of the year. Who ya got?

Don’t forget Joe Paterno. He won national championships even if he did stay 15 years too long.

Time will tell who is better. James is the better recruiter but I think Bill is better on gameday. Both are fair answers.

Bill O’Brien. There is a quote from Mike Hull who called him the best coach he ever had in that he taught him about X’s and O’s and situational football. James is more about relationships and recruiting.

I will take the one that did not quit after a 7-5 season and told people he hated the joebots and did not want to coach in college.

How many times can you people keep bringing up the nonsense about O’Brien allegedly doing “more with less”. O’Brien had the advantage of having players left over from Paterno’s tenure for the 2 years he coached. The scholarship limitations only kicked in after he arrived. Any one with any objectivity would realize that years 3 and 4 would be the 2 toughest years since Paterno’s left over recruits would be leaving and the scholarship restrictions would begin to be felt. O’Brien left right when the sledding would be the toughest.

Actual strategizing of offense and defense? B’OB ….. and it’s not close. —Everything else ( and there is much, as it has evolved) encompassing coaching? Franklin….. and that’s also not close.

Bob didn't think he needed Offensive Linemen. That alone is enough for me.

FLO inherited virtually 100% of his starting players on both his teams from Paterno - he was a dreadful recruiter and left the cupboard utterly bare (especially at OL - I think CJF had to convert several DL to OL just to allow the team to practice!). The cupboard was left bare0, as much because FLO was using PSU's time-&-$$$ to prospect for an NFL coaching job, as anything else. A lousy recruiter because he wasn't focused on doing his job and recruiting for PSU..., he was busy recruiting for himself and an NFL job.

Need to work on your grammar, Gnat.

IF Bob were a tireless recruiter, which he is not, then he would be far and away the better head coach. As it is, you left "coach" open-ended. As a position coach or offensive coordinator, there is no question that Bob is the better coach. As a CEO, I think that Franklin is the better bet.

He got a better job and what's wrong with hating JoeBots? He disliked people that put Joe's legacy above what he was trying to do. We should all hate them

Odd you took offense to that as you attack people for defending Joe even when they aren't.

He may have been more open to staying longer if the JoeBots stayed off his ass. It is amazing that he even considered CFB after his Happy Valley stint, but doing time in rehab with Saban appears to have caused him to reconsider.

Speaking of Saban, did you catch the dedication? Saban field at Bryant-Denny stadium. That is the way to retire, with dignity and well-deserved respect.

i don’t know, Bill won games with a walk on QB, a true Freshman QB and a linebacker at running back. He seems to be doing ok at BC with average talent. Will be interesting to see how BC does against Missu this Saturday.

Dreadful of recruiter or not, he by his own admission shorted recruiting offensive lineman for other positions when he was already short of offensive lineman. You are very accurate in saying he recruited himself. He did step in when few would have, but as a stepping stone. But I'm all right with that. I don't think I ever heard him say head coach of PSU was his life long aspiration.

It's odd people make excuses for Franklin using the sanctions but O'Brien who was here when they were actually implemented wasn't impacted. Of course he hated recruiting at that time. Franklin is the better recruiter but people are just being petty that he left and was honest while doing so. Since day 1 we knew he was leaving for the NFL.

There is the rub. How could any worthwhile head coach LEAVE Happy Valley? Who the hell does he think he is?

Both have served a purpose and have helped prevent the demise of the program. The books still out on Franklin regarding getting over the hump, but he has certainly re-established PSU as a solid Football program.

More BS and an opportunistic excuse for leaving. O’Brien planned on using the Penn State job as his stepping stone for a pro gig from the minute he stepped on campus. As I have said often in the past, I don’t begrudge him for doing that but just man up and stop the nonsense about why you left Billy. He also left town just when the impact of the sanctions truly hit.

See my other post. He wasn’t being honest when he said he left because of the alleged JoeBots.

He used us as much as we used him. It was a perfect relationship until both got what they wanted.

He was honest. The JoeBots,to this day, are a problem and we knew he wanted to coach in the NFL. He did nothing wrong nor were his comments untrue.
