on the roster he is listed at 149 ... was that always the planned weight for him in college and he simply wrestled up in HS?

TIA

FRL has been speculating about this for awhile. CP and Willie think he'll be able to make it for a year and that he was in fact wrestling up. They seem to think he'll quickly grow out of it. No way to really know, though. But anyway, my understanding is that has been the plan for Berge to start at 149.

Wrestled 145.5 this summer, which is a good sign. Then again, Joseph wrestled the same weight the summer after his senior year.

I think the hope is he goes 149 this year as a redshirt and then next year as he takes over for Zain. The following year he bumps up to 157 when Nolf graduates and 149 opens up for possibly Nick Lee (assuming he continues to get bigger). That's a long ways out so who knows but that seems to make the most sense to me. I'm also a huge Berge fan. I believe he has the talent to be a national champion.

This was discussed extensively last year. I'm just too lazy to link the earlier threads.

It was his plan to start in college at 149. Beyond that, who knows.

It's not that far fetched as it may seem. His senior season, he wrestled 152 and 160 (depending on whether it was the MN dual team championships, or the individual competition).

An article at the time that he verballed can be accessed at THIS LINK.

"Berge said he intends to redshirt his first season at Penn State. He plans to wrestle at 149 during his redshirt freshman season.

"I probably would have redshirted any place I would have gone," Berge said. "There are still things I need to get better at to win at the next level and win national championships. I'm not going there trying to be a one-timer, so that redshirt year is definitely important.""

Lee moving up to 149 seems very possible to me at some point. It'd be best for the lineup too, as it allows for us to get Teasdale and RBY in there. From a time standpoint, Lee being up to 149 by the time he is a junior could work out great for us.

Berge will make 149 fine, IMO. From what I heard, he wasn't cutting weight to make 152 much, if any, and wrestled up for duals.

In addition, he's coming to Rochester to do a clinic with Mark Hall at the JJ Classic (Intermat tournament) in late October, which is fantastic.

Berge is a gamer. Loved his match going up a weight against that top 170 lb from Minn (Allar?), needing a takedown, and firing away until he got it. Some Christmas tournament on Track I believe.

Here it is - they were wrestling at 160 (Allar was #4 at 170 and top 20 overall (according to Flo) so tough kid).

As an aside, RBY tore up this tournament
