Brandon Short says it WAS NIL that cost us our basketball coach.

I have no issue with the athletes providing something, advertising, whatever to the businesses contributing money to an NIL collective or working an NIL deal directly with the athletes.

I do take issue with a collective potentially taking fan donations and then using that money to set up an NIL deal with the athletes to the benefit the personal businesses of the collective's founders.

I also take issue with taking fan donations for NIL and then using that money to set up unpaid internships or spending it on overseas trips for the athletes. That is just siphoning money from fans for things that do not maximize NIL earnings.
hey what could go wrong

not like psu ever got into problems by dealing with non-profits

The whole premise of this video is flawed. Here's some tough love... Short and PSU basketball fans needs to drop the ego. Short stated that we are Penn State, we are not a stepping stone job. In basketball, we absolutely are a stepping stone job and we are an insignificant program at the national level. People need to get that through their heads. PSU is not even close to being a destination program for basketball coaches or athletes. Full stop. Everyone is applying their perception of the football program to basketball, and they aren't in the same universe. It's going to take some long term success before we can influence coaches to stay here, even if we have the best NIL program for basketball in the country.

True, as someone who attending many basketball games at the BJC with only a few hundred in attendance, it would not surprise me if PSU simply doesn’t have enough fans who care about basketball enough to make sufficient NIL donations specifically directed to that sport.

Very true. When I heard Short’s comments I thought the same thing. PSU is not a destination job for top college coaches. Maybe one day, but certainly not now.

what is wrong with Short wanting that
He can want that in one hand and shit in the other, and see which one gets filled up first. What he shouldn't do is bicker publicly and try to enflame the emotions of simpletons. And double that for Mauti. Let's not forget Short is only on the Board based on name recognition, and seems singularly fixated on athletics while other areas of the university are struggling mightily.

He's acting like PSU already is there with his comments. We aren't even close. Anyone that thinks we are a destination basketball program is kidding themselves. It's not shocking at all that someone with some success at PSU would leverage that to jump to another program, regardless of the NIL situation.

what is the problem with a board member wanting to move the program to that situation

what is with the constant narrative about our basketball program, and why do people feel the need to double down on it during times of actual success?

Yep. I have no problem with paying a PSU Wrestler for my son to attend one of his clinics, but no way in hell am I ever donating to any of these NIL “collectives”. The bickering and finger pointing has led me to believe none can be trusted with my money, and I’m sure many other Penn Staters feel the same way.
