Brands Interview

It's a horrible statement for recruiting imho - he's essentially saying that he's a very small person with zero class or sportsmanship. Not exactly the type of person I'd want to send my son off to be molded and shaped by.....
No doubt. If your Brands just congratulate PSU, it wrestlers and coaching staff, and then move on to the next question.

True, I guess, but still a horrendous thing to say from a recruiting perspective imho (comes off much better if he simply prefaced it with, "I take my hat off to the Champs - 5 Champions... I'm Jealous!". He's a very poor public speaker.
He’s tried everything else. Maybe the 3 inch binder went into the trash can now he’s just gonna appeal to the recruits through them just feeling bad for him. Lol

Honesty would be my guess, you can't say the Brand's don't say how they are feeling. Personally I think it's a bit refreshing.
I can agree with this to a point. By this I mean it would better in all ways for one to not feel jealousy at all. Feeling jealous is symptomatic of self-induced suffering.

I figure there's got to be some wisdom behind making envy one of the seven deadly sins. I believe it poisons one's spiritual well-being and true gratitude is an antidote. I also believe people are capable to change and evolve their approach to life in ways that will benefit their happiness, including elimination of envy.

This could be part of PSU's advantage over Iowa. PSU seems to seek recruits who are actively seeking to eliminate self-induced metaphysical suffering within a sport stereotyped as the most physically insufferable. Maybe this dichotomy provides one of the challenges from which Cael finds a good bit of his motivation.

One thing to say it as a joke after a compliment, but not a good look the way he said it imho.

He’s asked a question about his wrestlers’ performance in the finals, and his mind is so consumed with jealousy for Cael that he cannot even talk about it. Completely unprovoked. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that from a head coach. I honestly think that the Brands Bros lower their wrestlers IQ, and ruins their passion for the sport. I feel for their kids, but as a PSU fan, I welcome the 7-year extension.

Honestly after watching that you can see what is great about Brands. Sure he gets emotional mat side, but he gets up every day and tries to what he thinks is best for his kids in the best way he knows how. He truly cares for the kids on his team.
If I had a son that didn’t fit into Cael’s plan, I would be fine with him wrestling for Iowa.

At the end of the day I bet a lot of us, myself in common, probably have more in common with Brands than we care to admit. I wish I was more like Cael in my daily life but emotions can get the best of me just like the Brands brothers.

IMHO, Brands acts like a bully who's been knocked off his perch and has been reduced to an "empty drum" banging away......
That happened 12 years ago when Cael (windshield) told Tommy (bug) to go back to his corner and sit down, and Tommy did with barely a whimper.

Everyone has the capability to change from how they are to how they want to be. But it takes work. Have to think it, verbalize it, and act on it. Brands can change, but I will think he has more work to do when he unsolicitedly verbalizes thoughts of jealousy.

Most, if not all, PSU wrestlers spoke of the importance of becoming the best version of themselves outside of wrestling. Aaron seemed to reflect on his own pre-B1G personal backslide, recognizing it's all part of the human condition. Becoming one's best self is a life-long project.

Best wishes to all on their personal quests.

Here's another one to illustrate a difference between so much of Iowa vs Penn State mindset. Austin talks about how stressful wrestling is at 3:10, seemingly fearing losing more than anything: DeSanto

Conversely, listen to RBY at 1:30, 2:05 and 2:45: RBY

Just more evidence of just how special Cael and his staff are. Incredible wrestlers, but their mental approach really sets them apart.

Seems like that’s what ADS said the Brands have done for him and considering where he was to where he is…hard to argue.

Yes. Best to all. They all have their own paths, and PSU is just one of many.

This truly is the secret sauce IMO, and why it is and will remain difficult for other coaches to duplicate Cael’s success. His room practices, scheduling, recruiting, and other methods are well known to other coaches by now. That’s why Cael frequently says, truthfully, that the PSU coaching staff doesn’t know or do anything that others don’t. His elite mental game and perspective is just at another level, and that’s not something other coaches can really poach.

It will be interesting to see if any of his top pupils are able to replicate the magic as they slot into future head coaching roles in the years to come. Not hard to imagine that if Cael sticks around long enough some of PSU’s toughest opponents he will face will be led by his former star students.

It wouldn't be Iowa that is for sure. I would feel much better with a kid who wrestled for Rob Koll at Cornell.

Rob is a great guy. He's never out of control mat side. You always hear complimentary things about him and the program and the most important...the value of a Cornell degree.
So your kid is going to Stanford then, correct??

😉

I clearly don’t know Rob KOLL as well as you do. In light of current information, I rescind my previous statement.

With Spencer coming back along with Warner and Cassioppi.....that is a Dominant National champ and two others that could very well be National Champs. By all accounts Kennedy is a stud out of the gate. Add in Ayala, Murin, Brands, Assad and others.....that is a pretty salty lineup. Barring injuries at PSU...They most likely won't be the favorites ....especially if RBY comes back but they are going to be very solid. ASU will be up there. Okie State has to be better and Ohio State will be young and talented. It will be another fine and challenging year. But ...for the next 8 months.......5 for 5 Baby and #1. For at least the next 12 months....National Champs. Fun to say :)

Iowa should have an impressive lineup next season, one the Hawk faithful will no doubt believe gives them a shot at a title. By the end of the year they will be fighting for 3rd, 4th, 5th place with Spencer and maybe one other in the finals, and HR will be imploding eating their own.

I lost a few IQ points reading this comment.

Apparently PSU winning isn't enough for some people.

Sorry to trigger you, bro. It’s a forum. Relax. I was obviously talking about their wrestling IQ, not overall.

at least it appeared they were smiling with their 3rd place trophy presentation. That was a change. Acutally, the more you hear from the Iowa program it is almost as if they're on social media too much and are trying to be like PSU: we're having fund; team is having fun; we're not robots;...

Spencer won the Hodge! Remember that bit of social media cringe

I see the interview as a coach who is extremely passionate about the sport and the men he coaches; men who fell short of their goals, which it is his job to help them accomplish. Then to look across the mat at his biggest rival reeling off win after win has to be devastating. One thing I like about Brands is his passion, even when he goes overboard and borderline crazy. I prefer having the Zen-like, easy going Cael in our corner, but wrestling needs Brands and the Hawks.

I can make fun of the Brands with the best of them - well maybe not the best - but if I have to be honest its really just Terry that gives the whole Brands thing its hue. I don't see Tom bumping into people, yelling inane things and basically acting like he wants to get into bar fights under the guise of competitiveness and protecting his guys.
Tom is a very different cat than Cael, but MOST of the time the stuff he says resonates with me (I have to say most of the time because of the tinfoil cap stuff earlier this year, but you can chalk that up to the looney tune inner circle guys he's got to deal with to raise money). And I can see why guys will run through a wall for him. Perhaps that little extra bit of focus and self control seen in him is the reason he's got a gold medal and is the HC at a storied program - he's in select company there.
