Brands Interview

I'm betting Tom really wanted that win for Warner and the program to say he beat Penn state head to head. To lose that match and give Penn state a perfect five for five had to cut a little deeper. That said Tom has always appeared alkward in any interview. He seems to slow down his thoughts and picks his words carefully which makes his responses seem robotic at times. Some people aren't good in front of a microphone add stress and it can become traumatic and chaotic

With Spencer coming back along with Warner and Cassioppi.....that is a Dominant National champ and two others that could very well be National Champs. By all accounts Kennedy is a stud out of the gate. Add in Ayala, Murin, Brands, Assad and others.....that is a pretty salty lineup. Barring injuries at PSU...They most likely won't be the favorites ....especially if RBY comes back but they are going to be very solid. ASU will be up there. Okie State has to be better and Ohio State will be young and talented. It will be another fine and challenging year. But ...for the next 8 months.......5 for 5 Baby and #1. For at least the next 12 months....National Champs. Fun to say :)
MAN WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU SMOKING,ITS GONNA BE PSU THE NEXT 3 YRS TAKE THAT TO THE BANK!!

I don't smoke......or use all caps to send a red flag of insanity/stupidity. I never said anything about PSU not being the favorite next year. I never even mentioned any year beyond that. Perhaps you should let some 3rd or 4th grader read and explain the posts to you before you respond with a totally over the top or unrelated response. GET A GRIP SCOOTER!!!

It's Angry Spyker.

I kind of like Tom Brands and I love Tom's interviews, He is downright honest and speaks with his heart. You could see he was in pain and basically gave Cael and PSU a compliment. He loves his guys and gives his all to get the best from them. They got third place and had some injured guys fight their tails off to come back to be all Americans. Regardless if you do not like Iowa, you have to respect guys like... heck pretty much all of them. Kemmerer is a warrior, Marinelli came back to place, Cass went out winning, Warner made the finals(and showed great sportsmanship in losing), Desanto always gets after it and got 3rd. I could go on and on, and they all battled. I do not care for the antics of the Brands sometimes but hey that's just who they are. But Tom was emotional and you could clearly see it. I truly think he knows things need to change in many aspects there if they want to compete with PSU.

I also watched Desanto's interview after winning 3rd place. I have been critical of him in the past with his behavior, but he has definitely gotten better in recent history. His interview really was awesome to hear in what he had to say. It hit me pretty hard and made me sad a bit. That kid poured his heart and soul into everything and came up short and was so close and you could see his pain. Sure I root against him cause he wears that ugly Iowa singlet. Hearing his honest candid answers he came off like a really good kid. I wish him nothing but success moving forward.

I liked DeSanto's interview very much.

I believe he misspoke; he intended to say, he was envious......

Anyhow, it was an honest, forthright expression, and likely was felt by every other coach in the arena.
4theglory54, I was in your camp of interpretation until I just now researched the topic and found out that, like many questions, the answer is not always so black and white. :) Meriam-Webster has this to say regarding the different meanings of jealous and envious:

What to Know
While many people believe that jealous means fearing someone will take what you have, and envious means desiring what someone else has, historical usage shows that both mean "covetous" and are interchangeable when describing desiring someone else's possessions. However, when referring to romantic feelings, only "jealous" can be used to mean "possessively suspicious," as in "a jealous husband."

From Dictionary.com:

Jealousy and envy both involve a feeling of desire for what another person has, but jealousy is usually thought to be more negative—it often involves resentment toward the other person. Envy is also a negative feeling—like a mix of admiration and discontent—but the word doesn’t usually imply hostility. Another difference is that envy can be used as both a noun and a verb.

One distinction that is sometimes made is that jealousy centers its negative focus on the person who has the thing that you don’t, while envy is more centered on the desire for the thing. Of course, however, jealousy can be about both the person and the thing, and so the main difference is usually considered to involve how negative the feeling is.

A practical difference between jealousy and envy is that jealousy is always a noun, while envy can be a noun or a verb.

It's a horrible statement for recruiting imho - he's essentially saying that he's a very small person with zero class or sportsmanship. Not exactly the type of person I'd want to send my son off to be molded and shaped by.....
lol this is an insane interpretation. that was a compliment to cael. the definition of sportsmanship. i thought that was a great interview from tom and shows how much he cares about his guys. some of you let your sports fandom consume you with hate.

btw, talked to someone at the arena this weekend who had a friend who worked in the wrestling world quite a bit. apparently, she told him that tom and terry are the nicest guys in the world and treat the staff workers really well. same for cael. tom ryan....not so much lol.

You would be best to skim past his comments as most on the board do. I am not sure if he is intentionally antagonistic or his personality leads him to be that way.

It's Bushwood.

But in any case, Brands' entire substance was: I'm hurting for my guys, I want to win very badly and hate losing, and now is emotionally too early to analyze our loss.

That should be wholly non-controversial, except to people who bring out the knives in victory.

Just be glad he didn't reference the NCAA rulebook on public appearances, sportsmanship, and press conferences.

If the shoe was on the other foot and IOWA won with 2 or three champs while scoring 150 points, I think most of you would be singing a different tune.

I'm really happy Tom is at Iowa and not coaching in central PA.

So jealous towards a person and envious of things

Everyone has the capability to change from how they are to how they want to be. But it takes work. Have to think it, verbalize it, and act on it. Brands can change, but I will think he has more work to do when he unsolicitedly verbalizes thoughts of jealousy.

Most, if not all, PSU wrestlers spoke of the importance of becoming the best version of themselves outside of wrestling. Aaron seemed to reflect on his own pre-B1G personal backslide, recognizing it's all part of the human condition. Becoming one's best self is a life-long project.

Best wishes to all on their personal quests.
If you watched the Brands documentary, they have no intention of changing.

Tom has really grown on me over the years and I do enjoy his interviews. I still can't stand Terry and after watching his doc on flokaren you can understand why Tom won a Gold and Terry didn't.

If guys coming off redshirt is exciting to him, then this season must have been the best!

It is hard to discern another's intention with confidence.

Developing an intention to change is usually a prerequisite of change.

The words used during the interview appeared consistent to me with one having some work to do, if they have an intention to change.

Yes, I had watched the interview before commenting.

Too funny, somebody just posted above directly from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary that the word "jealousy" has a very negative connotation to it (as in, you wish ill upon the person you are jealous of and holds what you covet) - but according to you it is now a "compliment". You shouldn't correct people when they are right and you are wrong dipshit.

"Jealousy" is the height of sportsmanship according to you??? And I'm the idiot. LMAO. Just like booing injured student-athetes is the height of class and sportsmanship according to you Iowa losers????

I'm talking about the ESPN documentary on the Brands brothers.

Yes, I watched the documentary.

It seemed to me the Brand Bros didn't have the easiest of up-bringings. Certainly not the worst, but an alcoholic Dad who brags about cold-cocking a loudmouth fan, and parents who divorce can't be easy on two boys in hog farm country. Certainly a rougher life than mine.

The documentary made me more empathetic to the Brands Bros. I could see how they might've been inculcated in the ways of toxic masculinity. Mom's attitude to the sport didn't seem to temper things.

I would say Coach Brands has come along way, so I think he can continue to change. He still has a long life to live.

This. And that will be to their detriment. They are still buying into gables plan and it's 2022. Hey go for it I don't mind sitting on top of the mountain. It's amazing how many people on hr think there's nothing wrong it's just bad luck with injuries lol. Fan base bought into it as well I actually saw a quote on hr that said something along the lines of "the Iowa way won't work if they don't call stalling" lol.

The apples didn’t fall far from the tree. I cringed hearing their dad talk about punching someone in stands during one of their matches. I think I have that right. Anyway, he said it like he was some highschool bully proud that he’s so tough. It was weird…

Well I got a totally different take. He is being honest and he showed his compassion for his wrestler who lost in the finals. I thought it was a fantastic interview. He is honest, not perfect and I prefer honesty above all else, because perfect doesn't happen - although some would argue that there has been a perfect man and he was put on a cross. But that is a different topic

Tom Brands tends to just speak his mind and I can always respect that.

Better than Tom Ryan saying "Having 5 champions doesn't make you a great program"

Yeah right. What makes a good program is focusing on lifting weights, pin chains, black shirts and Robes. What a putz. Granted it's dated, but what goes around comes around. What about averaging 3+ champs a year for a decade, will that do it?
