Brands not satisfied with master of all things wrestling. ..

I'll answer yours since I have had four or five replies of the same type.

Chief say: Cael at ISU=Not a Winner. Cael want championship=him have to leave Iowa because Big Hawk cast long shadow. PA area have many good, young Braves and him not have to share hunting ground with Big Hawk=Good for Cael.

If Cael had stayed at ISU and David Taylor, Matt Brown, and Andrew Long were there with him, what would they have likely accomplished? I don't have all the roster info but they would have been pretty darn good and David Taylor would have attracted plenty of recruits to ISU all by himself during the past several years. Cael's magic was clearly starting to work at ISU before he left ...

Out recruit Brands? Winning does that but it was on the back of PA guys or guys that were already at PSU that he got his start. Cael was an asst at Iowa State and recruited a lot of their guys and was handed the keys to the kingdom with no loss of continuity. ISU consistently placed high but in comes Brands to rattle off three in a row after his first year at Iowa. Cael was smart in that he knew he would always be second fiddle not so much to Brands but to the Iowa brand. Do you think that if he could beat Brands and win titles at Iowa State, that he would have left his alma mater? Nope...he got run out and landed on a gold mine both in talent and a college that was ready to start winning.

David Taylor is from...Ohio... and he wasn't "already at PSU" when Cael arrived at PSU. Matt Brown wasn't there waiting for Cael to come to Happy Valley either. So, you can't say (Well, you could but it would be erroneous) that Cael had everything set up for him at Penn State when he came here. So the "back of Pa guys, just doesn't flush.

Cael with his legendary background, recruiting and coaching offensive wrestlers, the deep talent pool in PA = exciting multiple National Championship wrestling. Success breeds success and Cael has brought that winning formula to Penn State. That wasn't going to happen at Iowa State.

Not improving towards the end of the year is what I meant. Brands is certainly coaching hard, maybe he needs to adapt better to his guys though
Chief.

March might have proven to be more interesting had Brands not conceded the title by electing to redshirt guys like Kemerer. Maybe it's just me,
but it seems like he didn't go "all in" this year......

If that was the case, then he could have shirted Burak and load up next year's team. Kemerer is too light for 157 this year. Brands is pretty stubborn about red-shirting true freshman as well. This will be tested next year with Marinelli.

It's a stretch to say Brands conceded the title... Kemerer is at 49 right now, and Iowa seems to have a pretty good option there already... He may need a year to get up to 157.

Burak not shirting this year for next year says to me the opposite.

Perhaps a bit of a stretch, but I'm convinced a slightly undersized Kemerer is better than Cooper.

I agree that Kemerer probably is the better option. I think they are making the right move letting him develop into a full size 57 pounder for next year

Last year, Cael shirted three possibly four studs who could have made a serious difference at Nationals. Nico, Zain, Nolf, Nevills. I don't count Bo because he Brown ahead of him and that seemed to work out well. BTW, I hear that Kemerer has very good success in the room against all the mid weight guys to include graduates. You know who gives him the most trouble for some reason? Cooper.

AZ -- Based on your comment above, are we to assume that you are including both Sorenson and Metcalf? If so that is great news.

Chief, we are all well aware of Cael's redshirting strategy from last year. What I find interesting is the notion on your board that he simply "mailed it in" as opposed to having made a longer term strategic decision regarding the well being of his program. Brands on the other hand only knows one approach: "All in, every year!" This according to posters on your board. Of course their theory doesn't quite mesh with Brand's insistence on red shirting true freshmen, some of whom could potentially make a difference (Aside: taketop can't be happy. Perhaps he'll even start an MK transfer thread on HR?)

But hey, whatever works, right? Both programs seem to be doing ok.

One seems to be doing a little more "ok" than the other.;)

Your point actually proves my point from previous posts on this thread. If Cael has a magical coaching potion, then putting the guys in last year to win a championship should have been no problem. Cael had no problem wrestling true freshman before, right? But there is a pragmatic side to him that sees the big picture (re:leaving ISU). Some of you guys seem to think I was/am dogging him...I am not. Some of you will recall last year I said the shirting thing was a good move both on here and HR. Nico's arch nemesis in Delgado has moved on...and so has Striebler. Zain now has a legit shot at three titles while taking the year to move up. The difference between Brands and Cael? If Zain were Brands wrestler, he would have thought that Zain could eventually beat Streibler at the NCAAs at 141. Maybe so, maybe not...but Cael doesn't strike me as a gambling man unless he knows the game is rigged in his favor.

Which Hawk freshman should Brands have inserted to go "all in"?

IMO, Kemerer would have been in the same situation as Cooper...a 49 pounder trying to wrestle 57 with some mixed results. I am proud of Coop though. He's hanging in there. As for for the transfer thing...Kemerer seems to be happy...makes weight at every tourney ;) so I don't think any rumors will start.

From what I hear, he can roll with anybody. Also heard he came back to PA for Christmas and had a decent workout with a couple of guys you might know...

Chief -- I agree, the last thing I expect to read on any message board is that MK was unhappy and looking to transfer. By all accounts he appears to be very upbeat and Iowa seems to be a great fit for him.

Wrestling aside, he is a great kid and I look forward to following his career.
