Brett McMurphy: Moorhead to MSU - finalized within next few days

By this time in my life, you'd think that I'd be used to being wrong, but somehow it always sneaks up on me. I never figured this was the right place for him.

Good luck, Coach. I can't help but think this isn't a primo move, but I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

Absolutely wish Coach Moorhead the best; he did a terrific job at PSU and deserves a head coaching job.

I don't see much in his background (born in Pittsburgh, educated and played at Fordham, coached at Georgetown, Akron, UConn, Fordham, and Penn State) that would suggest a good fit with the SEC and recruiting that area of the country, but he's a smart guy. Dan Mullen was also from Pennsylvania and did well there.

Timing sort of sucks recruiting-wise. Assume he won’t coach in our bowl game.

That job is like being thrown to the wolves. But, Franklin - if anything - knows talent, and Moorhead delivered a high scoring, exciting offense and won a B1G Championship in doing so. I trust Franklin will find someone suitable and good luck to JoMo in the SEC.

It's a odd match at Starkville for Moorhead. No ties to Southeast for recruiting and most of his coaching career spent in northeast...I would have thought this made him a longshot.

Mullen left the program in decent enough shape though. It's not like he was run out of town after a bad few seasons.

I’m shocked. A “square-peg Yankee” trying to ingratiate himself into the “round-hole South”. He is in a no win situation, but if that’s what he wants, so be it...

Moorhead going from Penn State OC to a P5 head coaching job will make recruiting his replacement easier. I hope he kills it there - we don't overlap with MSU in recruiting or in any other way, really. He can do his thing down there to build that program without negatively affecting our program at all on the field - all while indirectly raising our profile.

Ohio State and Alabama are able to recruit great coordinators year after year because their coordinators get the opportunity to coach world-class talent and they have the opportunity to secure head coaching jobs. We can do the same.

good for him. Came in and his offense was everything that it was billed to be. He clearly knows the x’s and o’s

Not sure it’s a great move for him but wish him nothing but the best.

Morehead was key to turning the PSU offense around. Who does PSU get to replace him? Don’t think this D can go back to low scoring offenses and hanging on to 17-10 victories.

True. Dan Mullen also had been Urbs' OC at Florida for 4 seasons prior to taking the job.

Hope that we promote Rahne and keep the same system and playbook. No reason to make this veteran offense start over again.

We can probably bet that as of last off season when the doors started opening for Moorhead and HC opportunities that Franklin has had a plan in place for what's next. The coaches on that staff are pretty well versed in the offense, absorbing it like a sponge so will not have to look far to keep things rolling forward.
