Franklin's contract might look like a bargain after all of this season's churn. Saban is due to get a raise too given the escalator clause in his contract that ensures he gets paid similarly to the other highest paid coaches. I wouldn't be surprised to see Harbaugh get a new deal to remove the pay cut he took last year now that a playoff berth is likely.
I think the Irish may well look to Freeman, the Defensive Coordinator, who was seen as head coaching material even before this mindboggling turn of events with Kelly.
Given the fact that Franklin is getting farther away from the playoffs than closer, he is still the most overpaid coach in the country. And we can't fire him for half a decade. Sure we can, it just costs money to do it. But now there's also a precedent for restructuring contracts to boot. Regardless, Franklin's contract isn't as much of an outlier as we might have thought 2 weeks ago. Did you see how low Kelly's buyout is? It starts at only $4M and drops to $2M in only 2 years, and there's no buyout if LSU's AD leaves first. Kelly's bonuses are better too, he gets $500k per year just for being bowl eligible. Kelly's deal is also 90% guaranteed. These contracts are going to be the new normal and Franklin's deal is going to look like a bargain in short order. We were somewhat fortunate to get his deal done early, before the madness really began. And we can't fire him for half a decade
