Cael signed

Oh, I saw it, but it was as weak as a JT Barrett arm punt.

The 2nd place in the Big 10 crack has been a common one from those precincts who long coveted a Rose Bowl win over a football championship. Classic Big 10 parochialism.
I wonder if tOSU fans still remember the Clemson game. It was a real close game until kickoff.

The title of the article is a little over the top. Was an extension ever in doubt? I only ever put thought into the subject when I'd see a thread about it, and even then, I'd give it five seconds. Both sides have a great thing going, and when Cael was still on the job after his contract ran out, that was the clincher for me. If matters weren't heading in the right direction, we would have seen the train wreck long before now.
Correct. The only people concerned were those not involved. Familiar ring....

"What FloWrestling called 'one of the offseason's biggest dramas' " is hilarious. There was zero drama in Rec Hall or the BJC or Old Main. Cael wasn't leaving, Barbour wasn't letting him go, and everybody knew it.
"Liked" your post E-J, AND I catch your drift. The "drama" was mostly from fans, though it wasn't completely drama-free in the places you note. Bottom line is that the contract is done, now it's time to look forward.

Will the details of the agreement ever become public knowledge? I know one of the rumors was that Cael was trying to make sure his assistant coaches were taken care of as well. Curious if he accomplished that

A little rumor I pulled from another message board...I certainly hope this isn't true!

Team insider, Brantt:
"The Cael negotiations were a complete disaster. Money/salary wasn't an issue, but he wanted assurances and commitments on facility upgrades and other investments in the program to keep us at the top of the wrestling world and for whatever reason he just wasn't getting them. As of a couple weeks ago there was a legit 50/50 chance Cael was gone. Sandy basically removed herself from the process and the AD for wrestling got the deal done directly with Cael."

Is there even an AD for wrestling?

That sounds like something someone just made up to make themselves look like a bigshot and no, there is not an AD for wrestling, or any other sport for that matter.

Sounds like HR wishful thinking...

Cael signed, how it got there assuming people were adults no biggie to me. Also to me it means he got what he wanted or at least 83% of it. Which means we will remain on top or near it for the foreseeable future.

Watching Franklins discussion about his contract yesterday, I took away that he and cael (at least publicly) have put more emphasis on their staffs, the program and wrestlers than themselves (their salaries). #cultureproblems

While I believe most thought Cael's contract was pretty much a done deal because he seems to be where he wants to be. However, I do know from several friends Sandy can be a pain in the rear to deal with over certain issues and why in the world wait until the end of the contract to get serious about it. This contract should have been renegotiated with a 5 year extension last summer.

Not everyone can be a total pushover like Tim Curley - and that's the reason we got Ed DeChellis as a BBall coach (and other fiascos not to be mentioned in polite company).

There's a certain segment of the football board who will never give her a fair shot and usually go ad hominem (or ad feminum) every chance they get.

Whether fans from the football board give her a chance means squat. She runs things her way, some of the coaches find her a bit irritating, but as long as PSU teams continue to be sucessful (especially football and Franklin), the student athletes stay academically successful and out of trouble and the alumni continue to be generous Sandy is long term.

She still should have had this contract done a year ago. The success of the program with Cael at the helm has been unbelievable and there is a decent amount of cash contributed to the university from the PSU wrestling community.

And how do you know they haven't been working on this contract for quite a while? The only fact we know is the contract got done but still you have to complain. Sigh.

And I suppose you're perfectly satisfied with only 5 individual champs?! #LowStandards ;)

Not to say it doesn't exist, but I haven't seen any evidence to suggest one party (Barbour camp vs. Sanderson camp) was more responsible than the other for the delay. Most who have voiced displeasure seem to have assumed it was the Barbour camp holding things up. Not sure that is valid.

Just my opinion... but I doubt Sandy is stepping away from any contract involving a high profile coach. That would be a really, really bad look for any AD.
And I also doubt Sandy is in it long term. She's a facilities upgrade AD. Once this grand plan of hers gets rolling along, I think she'll move on to another project.

I heard Spencer Lee will be our next AD. Larry will be getting a job at Ursinus in about 15 years

Geez NOVA.
If my posts bother so much put me on ignore. Sigh.
The important thing it's done and Cael got just about everything he wanted. Yes. We will be on TOP of the wrestling world and i mean world for years and years !!!! PSU NATIONAL CHAMPIONS for many many years to come....

That sounds like something someone just made up to make themselves look like a bigshot and no, there is not an AD for wrestling, or any other sport for that matter.
There are assistant and associate Athletic Directors that oversee different parts of the Athletic Department. For example there is an associate AD to oversee facilities. Who knows maybe somebody like that got involved to discuss future plans for facilities.

It does take two people to get a deal done. Unless one side gives the other side pretty much everything it wants...sometimes it takes a deadline to get the deal done. Salaries for wrestling coaches are cheap in the grand scheme of the Athletic Department, facilities can be expensive especially over time.

At this point it really doesn't matter, contract got done, eventually we will hear the length of the deal.

Every sport has a liaison, or contact in the Athletic Department, normally an Assistant or Associate AD. For some sports, it's Sandy herself...but with 31 sports teams (does not include club level teams), it's too much for one person.

Actually there is a position that one could easily consider to be the "AD for Wrestling". His name is Adam Lynch and he is the "Director of Operations" exclusively for the Wrestling Program. It is almost like a mini-AD position.

You really think Adam was part of the negotiation for Cael's contract?

This position is usually under the head coach...they are responsible for travel arrangement, schedules and day to day things.

I think you are right about that. So it's less of an "AD-type" of position and more like an "Admin Assistant".
From "AD-type" to "Admin Assistant"? Still don't have it right, imo. Only jumping in here because Cael has an awesome staff top-to-bottom, but all most see are the coaches. Adam has the following duties...and more!!

-- Organize team travel
-- Schedule practice facilities home/away
-- Oversee budget and financial management
-- Oversee equipment/apparel orders
-- Coordinate summer camps and coaches' clinics
-- Oversee daily video editing and statistical needs
-- Assist recruiting coordinator with arranging coaches' travel and official visits
-- Act as liaison with sports marketing and academic student services

There's also an Administrative Assistant that has a full slate of responsibilities, some of it shared with Adam.

Sandy is a bloody bureaucrat! Nothing more and nothing less. She is a female Joyner and a puppet of the BOT just like Barron. These guys will accomplish nothing in their tenure but the status quo and take credit for the recovery of PSU which they've had very little to do with.

I hate the BOT as much as anyone, but I can't agree with you here. Of course they answer to the BOT, that is the structure of the University. But I think Barbour has done a good job so far. She had a few hiccups while learning the University and its culture, but I am pleased with where the athletics program is right now.

I understand PSUer but most of the coaches that have elevated the department were brought on by Joyner and Curley, Not Sandy. She has done what? Stretching contract extensions out with her two biggest assets is not a mark of someone who is on their game .... she is either a scary penny pitcher or a puppet! The university needs a national leader. She is not that!

They were hired under Joyner, but she has demonstrated the patience Franklin needed to succeed and has made changes with coaches where needed (womens gymnastics comes to mind). I also like the emphasis on facilities... the new lacrosse stadium is coming and the renovations to Jeffrey Field are YEARS overdue. She seems to be a strong proponent for our non-revenue sports. I don't know much about the awards, but her peers also thinks she is doing a good job...
