I have had season tickets for 20 years. I guess even with that history I don't go back far enough to understand. There is no reason to spew venom towards another team (except Ohio state maybe).

This one deserves a  and a o_O given that virtually all of the absurd ASWP threads are being started by ASWPers....

Seeing how they're this week's opponent, they're fair game. I'll stop making fun of them on Sunday.

For those of us who go back 30 - 40 years we have been looking forward to this week (and especially next week) for a long time. Let us have our say!

Yeah. Sure. One group of individuals likes to characterize our group of individuals as pedo enablers. Let's give them a pass. Especially this week.

Probably not. They have a large contingent of fans who are sick. They enjoyed what happened at PSU. If given the chance they wouldn't change what happened. It's very clear that they would gladly trade child sexual abuse if it meant that they could feel superior to Penn State. When a large part of their fanbase enjoys what happened there isn't anything you can do. It's sick.

If you look around the country to fans of schools they think what happened at PSU was a tragedy. They have empathy for the victims. Pitt fans look at it and see a victory for Pitt and themselves.

As others have said - the older alums (and folks who grew up in Pitt) are all over the drama and hate and embrace it fully. Younger alums, I'd say those that graduated ~2000 or later, couldn't care less about Pitt and don't understand nor perpetuate the $hit on Pitt attitude. No chance of changing the dialogue, on this board, on game week.

no disrespect but if you weren't around then you just won't get it................its kind of like that jeep saying.........
It's an independent thing.........you wouldn't understand

I could not agree more!

in 2011/2012 there were pitt fans that actually went out of their way to visit every message board possible from espn on down to spew their venom

If we score 14 touchdowns for 98 pts and have a chance to kick a field goal with 3 seconds left to get it to 101, then DO IT.

Some do. Not all. I am certainly an older alum and I have lived in the Pittsburgh area my entire life. I not only don't embrace the hatred. I don't embrace the "rivalry". This board carries some anticipation and excitement this week. It would be far greater, both here and nationally, if we were playing Alabama, or USC, or Florida State, or Oklahoma. Pitt will never again be a national program. Instead of Pitt, let's schedule teams that are.

They richly deserve everything that they have coming, and more. They deserve that their coach is a fool. They deserve that their program is a shambles and is on a downhill course pointed towards FCS. They deserve the empty seats, the lack of their own stadium, the shame, and the ridicule. No amount of bad stuff happening to them will ever be enough.

NO!

Just because you are too young to have a clue on this thing is not a reason to change the rivalry for those that actually know what the rivalry is.

Asking such is pretty immature..... In fact to me it is similar to tearing down statues of history for people that were not involved but cry and say they are offended. If this rivalry offends you, try ignoring it. That's what I do with some on this board that spew vulgarities or other offensive comments. You could ignore me if I come across that way to you. This is still America, barely........

I lived in Pittsburgh when the annual PSU vs Pitt game was between two nationally ranked teams. The rhetoric was high even then, before the Internet.

Maybe the PSU students should take a cue from the Cameron crazies a few years ago (against Carolina). The student section could put up a big "Welcome honored guests" banner as Pitt comes onto the field. Let a cheerleader give Narduzzi a bunch of flowers at mid field. When a penalty is called against PSU have the students chant "we beg to differ" rather than other phrases...... ;)

Fixed that for ya. Every year that goes by the "rivalry" becomes more and more a relic of the past. Current students don't view it as anything different than playing Temple. They're much more focused on games against OSU, Michigan and I'll even say Maryland after the crap they pulled a couple years ago. The old timers can burn the torch as bright as you'd like and raise the banner on whatever you think the rivalry is or used to be, but as time moves forward and Pitt rotates off our schedule hopefully for the last time, we can finally start to ignore them and let their notoriety fall away.

As Oscar Wilde noted, "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."

When you live near Pittsburgh, you never ignore them, I just laugh at their obsession with us! WE ARE!

You and I disagree on this Greg. You speak of what the rivalry is. I know what the rivalry was. Pitt's program is a shell of what it was in the 70's. Calling them a "rival" gives them an importance they do not deserve.

The FBI had to guard Coach Paterno on the field during games due to the constant death threats, and even when there were no games on the horizon, their fans constantly trashed PSU, especially regarding Sandusky. I would like to never schedule them again, and let them stew in irrelevancy.
