Carter Starocci's injury - news, updates, and speculations

And again if it’s a meniscus, he’ll be fine. After my patella tendon injury approximately 10 years ago, I had x-rays done. After the meniscus injury seven years later, I had more x-rays and another MRI done. I don’t have any arthritis in my knees at age 60.

So I went over with my physical therapist, friends, and what I was supposed to do it, and he did suggest I should get operated on because if I don’t, I might have arthritis in my knees in 20 years. I just looked at them with a weird look at my face and said when I’m 80?

He went Oh yeah and chuckled. Who doesn’t have arthritis in their knees at 80?
My son had a torn meniscus. It wasnt the pain that kept him out that year, it was when ever he move, strain, bend a certain way it would lock his knee straight. He had to press on it to unlock it and you could hear a very loud snap when he unlocked it. So it was surgery and out for the year.

Doc says it should last for a bout ten years and he will most likely have to get it repaired again.

I tore my medial meniscus, and played competitive softball for a couple of months on it, only to have it wander into the joint and lock up at a full run. Down I went immobile. If I pulled in my right foot with my left hand from behind and between my legs, twisting the knee joint a bit, it would pop back in and I was good to go until it locked up again. Eventually, it got worse and I couldn't run very far... A very reluctant and unbelieving Ortho "finally" gave me an MRI, and soon thereafter I had orthroscopic surgery to have the loose piece removed. I was back on the field in 2 weeks with a little soreness from the surgery, but the joint was great. He told me at the time I would get arthritis in 30 years. I got about 35 out of it and had my knee replacement last spring.

PS - I don't see a meniscus tear in Carter's situation, but if so he will be back very soon, certainly for nationals. I think it looks more like a ligament, and there it all depends upon the severity of the tear. Fingers crossed!

His was a flap that they stitched back on. out for 6 months, not allowed to bend it for the first 2 or so weeks in fear of tearing again. It was last year, he still has trou le with that knee always swollen, soar, and had to fight the pain This year.
This was his senior year and quite a good one compared to the first few. I was glad he finally got th confidence back to wrestle like he was capable of.

Like you said I don't think Carter's is like that. Although my son actually has no idea what he did that tore it. He said he went for a shot at practice and it popped, no twisting or anything, weird I know I didn't believe him until he showed me hiw he had to unlock it. I cringed, saying, yep you're going to the doctor.

Yeah. I did a long jump and when you land and your ass hits your heels, I felt and heard mine pop.

Had the Ortho listened to me or if I had been more of an ass kicker at that age, maybe they would have caught it early enough to stitch it back together. Mine was too far gone, so they cut the loose piece out.

To hear Carter is on the bike is great news. The bike was by far the best rehab for both my meniscus surgery and my knee replacement. It really accelerates the healing, and pushes your range of motion which is really important.

As credible of a source as you can find on a message board (alb409 on 247)

"Moving, on the bike. Heals faster than others. No reason to risk big tens, will default as said. Going to let it fly for NCAA's."
Carter should go Rocky III mode and spend some time in the pool!

we all remember a kid name Aumiller I think from Cedar Cliff quite a few yrs ago anyways he wrestled in the Dapper Dan but had knee surgery a week or 2 before the match and he went out and gave a pretty good beating on the USA kid!I thinks that's right LOL

Ligaments don't always tear - you can "sprain" them without tearing (really depends how fortunate you are - no way to tell from just video). Even if torn, there are many varieties of tear... complete separation, severe partial tear, minor partial tear.... A minor partial tear would probably not prevent him from wrestling.... generally can be addressed later and sometimes heal themselves with no problems. There is no way to guess the severity of his injury - it could range from a sprain to a complete tear.... he could be fine in two weeks or unable to wrestle, just no way to guess without more information from Carter or PSU.

Cael is doing a "Coach's Show" on LionVison & radio tonight. Every once in a while, Cael lets his guard down a smidge for Byers, so you never know, we might at least get something to talk about until Carter weighs in (or doesn't) in College Park.

Not sure who it was, but not Aumiller.
***additional note -- it may have been Aumiller, who lost at Dapper Dan but did well for a kid coming off knee surgery.

Aumiller won States in 1981 at 112# and lost in the Dapper Dan 5-4 to a kid from Virginia. Aumiller was a year behind Steve Sefter at Cedar Cliff who won 2 PIAA titles after being runner-up as a Freshman and Sophomore. Went to PSU for Football and Wrestling.

Pretty sure he tore it at regionals. Had arthroscopy done the next day and won AAA states later that week, altho there may have been a week in between. In the early 80s arthroscopic knee surgery was pretty new.

I was CC 82. Sefter still amazes me. 156 2nd, 167 2nd, 185 1st and hwt 1st.

Appreciate the CC Colt mentions.

I was a "guy in the room" for Coach Bob Craig in the late 1960's.

Mine are quite mild and my first occurred just shy of 58, the second at 60. Mild again. I'm betting his was worse and a guy like me who walks, lifts some weights, mows lawn etc isn't putting my knees under a lot of stress.

Go for Big tens?
Not asked or answered.

Questions were pretty scripted about all 10 guys. For Carter the lead in was “what effect is there for someone like Carter to have a lot of extra time before BIG and NCAA”…

Cael said it was great to have time to heal … Carter is a tough kid who has battled injuries while career… etc.

And “not as bad as we originally feared” which was about the only real news.

I don't know about anyone else that was at Rec Hall on Sunday, but you could of heard a pin drop when Carter limped off the mat. I buried my heart at Carter's wounded knee.
