He was a memorable character. Grew up as an orphan I believe but he had real passion for life. Quite a wrestler himself who lost a close match in the Trials to narrowly miss going to the Olympics. Coached at Newport for a few years and went on to Cedar Cliff where he coached football and wrestling for many years with great success.
One of the most competitive persons I ever met. Not just coaching wrestling and football, but he would teach a PE class occasionally with a touch football game with regular students and play his butt off. Hated to lose even a game like that.
Didn't cuss that I ever heard, but when he said NUTS! everybody paid attention. Had this deep voice and could grow a beard in a hurry -- must have had testosterone levels off the charts. Sadly, he didn't live long after retirement.
