CELLPHONE LIGHT ON WHEN MICHIGAN HAS THE BALL ON THIRD DOWN

For the whiteout, someone on a message board initially suggested it would be cool, and others agreed and started spreading the word. Here this guy thinks it would be cool, so he puts it out there and others agree and start spreading the word. Forgive me if I fail to see a meaningful distinction.

From what I can tell, if the guy had been a message board member and tried to start it there, it would’ve been organic. But because it was twitter or the radio, it’s contrived.
I guess i would say that giving out tshirts @ the stadium facilitates the idea of everyone wearing white. Now, the word contrived...
con·trived
/kənˈtrīvd/
adjective
  1. deliberately created rather than arising naturally or spontaneously.
    • created or arranged in a way that seems artificial and unrealistic.
"the ending of the novel is too pat and contrived"
So, I give you a shirt to facilitate stadium whiteness. But if I come up with the IDEA to add white shining lights from cell phones, that is a creative act, and thus MORE, not less admirable.

Ideas are creation. Facilitation is mere marketing, no?

I agree with your take on the facilitate vs contrive part with handing out the shirts. But I’m still wondering why a guy coming up with the whiteout idea on a message board = organic, but a guy doing it by twitter = contrived. What’s the difference?

The difference is, you are ON a message board.:Do_O

It's a really cool visual but it didn't catch on for third down. And after being there, I don't think it will catch on. The problem is, people don't want their phones to die after the first quarter and it becomes a hassle to keep taking your phone out and turning the light on and off repeatedly. I liked the idea in theory, but I don't think it caught on except during the player entrance.
