Clarion Open and Other News...

Thomas with wins over Costello (Iowa) 10-3, Trent Hilger (Wisc) 7-3, Austin Myers (Mizz) 7-1 last year. R12 at Scuffle losing to Boykin and Goodhart. Seth should have his hands full.

Pretty dang exciting match for 285. Thomas wins, in sudden victory 10-8 but I thought Nevills should have had the call at the end of regulation.

Looks like Seth won in OT 9-7. That's a pretty nice 1st college win (for a kid who won't start college until next year). I thought Iowa had the market cornered on HWTs.

Seth lost, Thomas got a body lock and tossed him for the TD in OT.

Ref was out of position a lot in the last :30 of regulation, I think Seth should have won it with a reversal there, and also a locked hands missed.

Thomas got in on his double a bunch, good match overall.

Good match from the big fella. Thought he was gonna gas out, but showed that Nevills heart. Came up just short, but probably should have won the match. Giving up that reversal was a big mistake. He looked to have great reactions in the 1st period (against a quick opponent) and then his feet looked a little heavy later on. Luckily his size lets him get away with it a little bit. Looked relatively lean and impressive overall.

I imagine that conditioning is a little more difficult coming from the NLWC

Seth lost in ot

Not shocked with how the scoreboard was reading in the 3rd. Looks like we got some kids more interested in their phones than keeping up with the action on the scoring computer.

On the dashboard it had Seth with the TD in OT, but I guess they got it corrected.

Still, very nice performance for him. Pitt kid would likely be a kid you will see at nationals type.

Agreed that he looked leaner and stronger than I remember him looking in high school. Must have hit the weights hard...

Thomas with a double for 2 late, then Nevills got something similar to Sadulaev’s move on Snyder, got one swipe, then Thomas kicked out and the ref gave seth an escape instead of reversal.

Nevills Thomas match was a good gauge of where Seth is, even if Thomas is more athletic than typical college HWTs. He showed some nice defense and instincts, made a few mistakes, but tried things. Was surprised his conditioning looked as good as it did by OT.

With the swipe, a challenge probably would’ve overturned the escape and turned it into a reversal and ended it in regulation. No challenge because he’s unattached though, correct?

Good info Dice! FLO also mentioned that he was an NAIA Champ and Runner Up before he transferred.

Found Brooks in the "Elite" bracket at the Cowboy Open--missed that delineation earlier.

Beard in hole on Mat 9
Lopez assigned to Mat 1 and Friery Mat 5

For all the b*tching about the FloArena that goes on all over, isn't nice to watch the dashboard of a tournament without a freakin' commercial popping up every five minutes and having to refresh your browser every time you leave your tab for a couple of minutes???

Actually, I could live with the commercial if judicially deployed. But the refresh thing, if you're not continuously watching just kills me. It's beyond terrible.

I've bitched about Flo for a few things, but Flo Arena has always been great. And the alerts feature is fantastic. Besides being really useful while just sitting at home watching a tournament, I used it last year when I was shooting the NCAAs so I could know which mat I needed to be near in advance. The year before all the photographers had to go into the tunnel and watch the video boards to see which mat your guy was coming up on.

The only real thing Arena is missing is the in-widget "depth" that Track has, makes it much easier to follow across a tournament.

A "view last result" button (preferably one that would have a quick display onmouseover) would be super as well.

That is annoying on track, agreed. But the "depth" feature on each mat on track to see what matches are upcoming is awesome. I can live with that annoyance for depth.

Yes, they certainly got this right.

I could nitpick about bracket layout display - mainly sizing - and the klunky champ/consy/5th/7th pull downs, but everything else they have it all over track.

I actually like Flo's better. Especially for tournaments with lots of mats. Quick scan every once in a while and you can look for names that pop out at you 3 deep. On track you can only see the scroll of mats on your display, which is usually 9 deep at best.

Damn, Beard is good on his feet. And from top. Looks polished too. Just buzzsawed his way into the finals with another TF.
Not to disrespect anyone, but so far he has had two trFR and a D2 kid that is in action for the first time in 2 years. I would hope that he buzzsaws them and looks really good doing it.

In Bulsak, he's going to have a legitimate nationals type veteran who has looked good dominating his side of the bracket which had all the seasoned guys. Guess the Clarion coaches wanted to make sure Bulsak got some good matches in. This will be a nice matchup for Beard.

I missed the first two matches but Burrs looked like a decent wrestler who probably gave up once he got rode for awhile.

Beard was just assigned Mat 9 so they're going straight into the finals I guess.

Wow, did someone hack LP's account? I'm not used to so much positivity about a Nevills. Seriously though, thanks for the analysis LP.

I missed how Beard jumped out to a big lead against Clarion's Bulsak (a NQ last year) in the finals but maybe conditioning catching up because he's stalling from bottom in the third, up 13-5.
Bulsak got two back points late, but Beard wins 13-9.

Well, looks like Beard needs to practice defending the legs a bit and how to get active on bottom, but what an impressive first tourney for a kid right out of HS! Takes out a NQ from Clarion in the finals, nice job!

Looks like he was ridden out for the last 2:30 of the match. Gave up a reversal and then 3 stall points and 2 backs, almost giving up a riding time point. Wins 13-9 after being up 13-2.

Lots of work to do in a couple of areas, but he's a greyshirt FR so no rush. I know it might sound harsh and maybe I'm channeling my inner-LP, but not great IMO.

On all fairness, he dominated Bulsak on top and on his feet. He got ridden like a rented mule in the 3rd, but he won 2 out of the 3 positions by far! Also, that was his first time in the third period in a college match ever. He needs to build up the cardio along with improving his bottom skills, but still an impressive day if you ask me!

BallSack is a very good leg rider. Not great on his feet but very tough on top. Not surprising to see a kid a few months out of HS have trouble with him.

I'll focus on the guy who went up 13-2 on Bulsak in his first action out of high school, and let the coaches worry about the last 7 points of the match.

Quick scan of Bulsak's matches last year: only 2 guys scored 10+ points against him -- Mueller (SD State) and Reenan. The year before, only Weiler.
